Kyle Hendricks was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the week of May 12-18. Hendricks made only one start, but it was a good one. Hendricks tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts with no walks and three hits allowed over eight shutout innings. Iowa topped Round Rock 2-0. Hendricks gave up just the three singles and faced 27 batters in his eight innings of work.
Kyle Hendricks improved to 4-3 on the season with a 3.06 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. In eight starts, Hendricks has allowed 22 runs, 17 earned, on 45 hits with 11 walks and 54 strikeouts in 50 innings. Over his last three starts, Hendricks is 1-2 with a 1.40 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Hendricks has allowed 16 hits with three walks and 25 strikeouts in his last 19 1/3 innings.
Kyle Hendricks is the third I-Cubs starter to earn the Pitcher of the Week award this season. Hendricks joined last week’s recipient, Chris Rusin, and Tsuyoshi Wada. According to the release, the I-Cubs pitching staff has allowed the fewest hits (341) and walks (94) in the PCL and is ranked fourth in strikeouts (352) and sixth in ERA (4.05). Iowa is tied with Round Rock for the most shutouts (5) this season.
Albert Almora went 2-for-5 on Monday and raised his season slash line to .279/.303/.388 with 10 doubles, two home runs and a .691 OPS. Over his last 10 games, Almora is hitting .341/.356/.477/.833. Almora has hit safely in eight of his last ten games and has recorded double digit hits in each of his last six games.
Almora has seemingly gotten on track since his 3-for-5 performance last Tuesday that included three doubles and four RBI. The game on May 13 was the first time Almora’s father had been able to watch him play. Albert Almora Sr. underwent surgery for prostate cancer 20 days earlier.
