CCO Fantasy Baseball League – Week 8

Eight weeks into the season and we have only five teams under 500. That makes 15 teams in the playoffs or within one game of the playoffs. Only three teams stand on top at 7-1 and 6-2. Runnin Bredstiks is the No. 1 seed right now at 7-1 with Kentucky Ripsnorters the No. 2 seed by leading the Waveland division at 6-2. Third seed is The Calicubs also at 6-2. The playoffs currently need a 5-3 record and 2205 points to break the tiebreaker.

FL JimBoC (5-3) 402 over CubfaninSeattle John (4-4) 243

What happens when 2 players get you 123 points and your opponent scores 243 with his whole team?  Yep a blow-out. Adam Wainwright picked up 2 wins with 21 k’s in 17 innings while not giving up a run while Nelson Cruz drove the offense with 4 Home Runs and 7 RBI’s. Jered Weaver threw a 2 hitter on his way to 33 points. It was a week to forget for Seattle as Justin Verlander lost 11 points in 2 starts and his offense took most of the week off.

RunninBredstiks (7-1) 342 over Bullpen MacGyvers (4-4) 321

Tied going into Sunday at 271 this one came down to Sunday’s pitchers. Bredstiks picked up 46 points in 3 Sunday starts and the margin of victory came from Sunday free agent pick up Jimmy Nelson and his 21 points in his victory over the Marlins 7-1. For the week, Bredstiks brought their bats with Chris Davis (43 pts., 4 HR’s, 10 RBI’s), Michael Brantley (37 pts., 1 HR, 1 3B, 2 2B’s, 6 RBI’s) Jonathan Lucroy (35 pts., 8 2B’s, 5 RBI’s) and Jose Altuve (33 pts., 10 singles, 3 2B’s) having big weeks. MacGyvers was led by Doug Fister and his 39 pts. in his 2 start week and Justin Upton and his 3 HR and 10 RBI’s on his way to 39 points.

07Greydigger’s Crushers (5-3) 307 over Waiting on Bryant (2-6) 295

Another close finish after Waiting on Bryant made a comeback attempt on Sunday but came up short. Greydigger was led by Corey Kluber in his 2 start week, striking out 17 in 14 innings to put up 43 points. On offense Marcell Ozuna (34 pts.) hit 3 HR’s and drove in 9 runs. Bryant had some big offensive weeks from Edwin Encarnacion (38 pts., 5 HR’s, 9 RBI’s) and George Springer (35 pts., 4 HR’s, 9 RBI’s).

Clark n Addison Tony_H (5-3) 261 over Team Scared Hitless (0-8) 208

Scared Hitless! That was me this week as I watched a winless team keep pace most of the week as a slowly gained on him over the weekend. Absolutely nothing to write home about on my team this week as not one player scored over 28 pts. and not one hitter was over 21. Good timing is all I can say!

Team Gramps (4-4) 308 over Aguas de Marco Billy (5-3) 287

Another good game this week came down to Sunday with Gramps with a 5 point lead. Julio Teheran who had an awful week last week was the hero throwing 6 innings, striking out 7 giving up no runs on his way to a W and 26 pts. For the week Teheran put up 59 points, picking up 2 wins while giving up 0 runs, over 15 innings with 15 k’s. Aguas de Marco Billy had one week over 30 with Lonnie Chisenhall hitting 4 2B’s, 2 HR’s and 6 RBI’s to put up 34 pts. Edwin Jackson got cut after his -11 pts. in just 4 innings.

The Calicubs (6-2) 336 over Team JasonOfTheBurbs (3-5) 179

Dallas Keuchel put up a big 2 start week with 17.2 innings, 14 K’s, and only 2 runs on his way to 65 points and lead the way for Calicubs. Calicubs had a pretty balanced offense to easily win over JasonOfTheBurbs who had a week to forget.

Kentucky Ripsnorters (6-2) 362 over Northside Bleacher Bums (4-4) 274

362 points and his best individual performance was 34 points from Tanaka. If someone told me that a team would have 3 W’s, 0 Saves, and only 6 HR’s, I wouldn’t have thought they would put up 362 points.  Balanced team effort out of Kentucky that is for sure. The Bleacher Bums only highlight of the week was Josh Beckett’s no-hitter on Sunday to get 45 points.

The Wrong Team (4-4) 281 over Whats Optimism? Vivid Reality (5-3) 214

The Wrong Team was led by Stephen Strasburg and his 29 pts. and Garrett Jones led the offense with 2 HR’s and 23 pts.  Even the most optimistic person can’t find much good about Vivid Reality’s week and not one player over 20 pts.

BigJonLilJon’s LehairOfTheDog (5-3) 295 over Baywatch Buttspanx (4-4) 199

Jason Hammel led the way for Big Jon in his 34 point 2 start week and Ian Kinsler led the offense with 30 pts. Baywatch didn’t have one player over 20 points.

Slammin Steve Petty (1-7) 261 over Balls Deep in the Ivy (1-7) 250

Slammin Steve picked up his first victory. Slammin picked up JA Happ on Sunday and he led the way to victory with 7 shut-out innings.

The transaction wire was busy again this week with 40 free agent pick-ups this week. Many players that were dropped creating a chain reaction of transactions as they get picked right back up by another team. Daisuke Matsuzaka, Billy Butler, Clay Buchholtz, and Jeremy Hellickson all were cut and found new teams this past week. Cub players Ryan Kalish and Edwin Jackson both were cut this week along with former Cubs Kyle Farnsworth and Paul Maholm.

Hard Luck Good Luck

Hard luck teams (Teams that should be in the Top 8 based on points). CubfaninSeattle John stayed out of the playoffs this week with the 7th most points but is currently 1 game behind in the standings.

Good luck teams (Currently in the playoffs, but not in the Top 8 in points). BigJonLIlJon’s Leahir of the Dog is holding onto the 8th spot with a 5-3 record, even as he sits 12th in points.  Of course he is holding off fellow good luck team Aguas de Marco Billy also at 5-3 who is in 9th place but currently 15th in points.

Next Monday, June 2 is Week 10 and a position round

Weeks 10 and 20 are the same match-up.
Weeks 11 and 21 are the same match-up.

So in weeks 10 and 21 we will be doing a position round. 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, etc down to 19 vs 20.

I will not set the schedule until Monday morning of those weeks once the standings are official.

One other note, the league is for public viewing.  Here are two shortcuts to take you to the league site on ESPN.

This was a tough week for me. Couple of starters had their starts cut short by weather, Scherzer threw a baseball anomally and worst of all, Prince, the cornerstone to my Championship team (Yeah I said it) went down with a season ending injury.

    • Tony_H

Tough break. In a smaller league that is easier to recover from, but in this league, it is closer to real life where there isn’t another player that is even close to that production to pick up.

      • calicub

Exactly! You cant find that kind of production anywhere. Now, If bigJohnLittlejohn can get the Tigers to sit Cabrera, V-Mart is at 9 games at 1B

        • BigJonLilJon

Yea… I’ll get right on that one Tony!!!!

  • calicub

    402 points!??!

    Hot Dang!

    • Tony_H

Two of the Top 5 individual performances this week with 77 pts from one player. Pretty tough to beat that.

    • JimBo_C

  • Tony_H

    Some good match-ups this week.

Kentucky Ripsnorters (6-2) vs Whats Optimism? Vivid Reality – Big match as Rip is the #2 seed, leading the Waveland division and Optmism? is the #7 seed.

Gramps (4-4) vs Northside Bleacher Bums (4-4) Big week as one goes above 500 and one goes below.

CubfaninSeattle John (4-4) vs BigJonLilJon’s LehairOfTheDog (5-3) Seattle John needs a win and another tough opponent for him.

I get The Wrong Team and need to rebound from my last 2 bad weeks, in which I still got one gift win. I am 5-3 while Wrong Team needs a win to stay above 500, currently at (4-4).

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

Tony – anyone mentioning login issues? been playing this on a chromebook and my android phone. phone is still working ok, but chromebook view of the site (which had been great) suddenly seemed on the fritz mid-week. Links were invisible, but still active if I hovered over the right area. I attempted to update my lineup on chromebook and it prompted me to login, and user and pword were saved as normal, so I just hit enter like I normally have, but espn didn’t like it.

I have since retrieved username and password, tried to reset the password, but no matter what password I enter it does not save and same “enter your new password” page pops up.

I can play via the phone, but almost all research and trades and lineup changes are a lot easier on a notebook. Let me know if you have any thoughts as to what is going on.

ps…totally huge comeback week thwarted by new #7 starter Clay Buchholz immediately. I am cursed for the league this year.

      • Tony_H

Not that I have seen. I make most of my lineup moves on my phone (love the notification when you have a player in your lineup that isn’t starting). And use my work and home laptops for going on the site for everything else.

        • BillyFinT

I was using PC, and all the featured icons on Players, My Team, and some webpages didn’t show up. Some of the icons are back right now. I don’t know when the other half will. ESPN servers were probably crashed or hacked.

      • calicub

i’m having the same problems. Cant login on chrome browser, cant see the lings like breaking news, add player icons, etc. on both mozilla and my android device browser, so i’m hoping its ESPN

        • JasonOfTheBurbs

Not for destroying me this past week…for the comments verifying the Chrome issue. At least I know it isn’t me or my computer then.

          • Tony_H

I use Chrome on my computer and have a 7″ chrome tablet that are all working.

          • TheWrongGuy

It will be a tough week but my Wrong boys came out playing to start this week. 80 points on day 1.
BTW Tony, Skaggs Roark and Bedard all start 2 times this week. Cain would have started 2 times as well but the injury is holding him out.
I know you have a great pitching staff.
But my bullpen and offense make up for my less of a rotation than yours. It will be a fun week.

          • Tony_H

You have a huge 1st day on me. Pick the right 8 starts and you may run away with it.

I like my offense as well. All in all, pretty happy with my whole roster.

          • TheWrongGuy

I ended yesterday with 85 points even with a -14 pitching performance by Bedard (I was going to bench him for the record, but Cain was injured so I left Bedard in the rotation). Was one of The Wrong Team’s better days this year.
Its good I left you with a tough hill to climb. :)

          • Tony_H

I didn’t notice that. I almost picked Bedard up in Billy’s league, but passed on him.

Looks like I have to try and catch up all week.

          • TheWrongGuy

I picked up Bedard only because of constancy. He let me down this week. I was going to bench him because he’s a lefty going against one of the hottest hitting teams in MLB. Toronto has destroyed lefty SP this year.

      • Bredstik

I was having similar issues yesterday on multiple PCs. In fact, it ended up costing me 7 points as I was trying to substitute Duda in for the non-starting Davis. By the time the page would allow me to make a move, Duda was locked for the day to my bench. Sure hope I don’t lose by 7 points or less this week.

First time I’ve had any of these types of issues all season though.

One thought… Now after the draft, I’m not really sure what’s the point of limiting max RP on the roster. I tried to add a RP but the system kept telling me I’m maxed. It’s annoying when one’s SP has a “RP” eligibility, like that helps in this league, because RPs garner less points than SPs.

I see the point of having max SP on roster. With the weekly limit of Starts, it’s not necessary, but you want the simulation, so managers keep some RP. It’s counteproductive to limit the owning of RP further.

Having said that, the league’s working fine in general, so I’m not expecting we vote on this. Just saying.

    • Tony_H

Because some of the RP, are now starting and it is way to stockpile more starters. Some are already using some of their 4 RP spots to have more than 7 starters.

      • Bredstik

I’m not really seeing that advantage of stockpiling starters though when you can only use 8 starts per week. I think I’d probably stockpile RPs over SPs since there’s no limit to how many times you can use them in a week and can play matchups & off days.

I’m somewhat at a disadvantage with Montero, as even though he is now listed as a SP also, he counts as one of my 4 RP because that is what he is listed by first on ESPN. This allows me to only carry 3 actual RP on my roster and fills all 3 RP slots.

        • Tony_H

SP’s are like Gold in this league, I am sure you would figure out a way to trade them to improve your lineup.

    • Tony_H

Also the 7 SP’s and 4 RP’s is based on which ever one is listed first by ESPN.

      • TheWrongGuy

Yes I am using Justin Grimm in my SP slot even though he is being used exclusively as a RP this year, so far.
Earlier in the year I had Brett Anderson as a SP but his main position is RP. So he counted as a RP and not a SP.

        • Tony_H

NP, those are the rules. If I could find a RP/SP that I want I would pick one up to give me one more option to get to 8 starts.

But as we talk about next season, we need to address SP’s as they are far to scarce in this league.

          • TheWrongGuy

I think reduce the SP per team to 6 and 7 starts per week. as there are only 7 days in a week.

          • Tony_H

Kind of what I am leaning towards as well. I think it is more realistic. But 7 SP’s and 8 starts has been tough for some to get use to, one of our teams that isn’t actively managing, has basically quit because he doesn’t like the rule, yet I don’t believe he has ever played fantasy baseball before this league.

  • calicub

So for the last few weeks I’ve been putting together a power ranking for myself and my opponent so i can have some idea of how strong my opponent is coming into that week. Since I had a little extra time today, I ended up doing it for the whole league. I do a point system based on stats, roster construction, and a few other variables to get a better idea of what I’m up against. It has more to do with the teams ability to score/lose points rather than the teams actual record.

So without further ado, here is Calicub’s Power Rankings entering into Week 9:

    1. The Calicubs
    2. Whats Optimism? Vivid Reality
    3. Runnin Bredstiks
    4. Kentucky Ripsnorters
    5. 07Greydigger’s Crushers
    6. FL JimBoC
    7. Clark n Addison Tony H
    8. Team Gramps
    9. Baywatch Buttspanx
    10. BigJonLilJon’s LehairOfTheDog
    11. Team JasonOfTheBurbs
    12. Bullpen MacGyvers
    13. The Wrong Team
    14. Balls Deep in the Ivy
    15. CubfaninSeattle John
    16. Waiting on Bryant
    17. Northside Bleacher Bums
    18. Slammin Steven Petty
    19. Aguas de Marco Billy
    20. Team Scared Hitless

    • Tony_H

I do it simpler, I look at teams pitchers and ask if I would trade places with them. I then do the same with the batters.

Hard to go by record in a 20 team league, it is too dependent on who they have played and who they haven’t.

    • Bredstik

Came up with your own Power Ranking system that ranks you #1 huh? 😉

I should come up with one on my own that puts me at #1…..

      Got it. The Standings. :-)

      • calicub

Lol yes i saw that and was expecting the comment but its because of my pitching my winning streak and carrying a roster short a player. I can assure you nothing was tweaked in my favor. Like I said, its a variety of factors taken into account.

        • Tony_H

I would sure hope that you build a team that mirrors what you are looking for in ranking teams.

  • Cubbiemacg

Selling Peavy while he is low could include a Dee Gordon if the right sp is dangled

  • Vivid_Reality

I would just like to make note that Tony said he wouldn’t even trade Alex Avila straight up for Mike Zunino but he just dropped Avila in favor of starting Zunino :)

    • Tony_H

I was holding out hope for the Avila of a few years ago to come back and didn’t want to take the chance on basically a rookie. But now I liked the upside of Odor and Zunino has more upside at this point over Avila, so even though I liked having a catcher in my lineup everyday, missed out on a HR last week, so decided to stop going back and forth.

Plus, I almost never say yes to a trade out of the gate, because no one offers a trade out of the gate that is anything but a win for them (or I would hope no one would).

      • Vivid_Reality

I always offer trades expecting them to have no interest or counter. It usually puts some people off with obviously bad offers but I’ve found that it generates more back and forth.

        • Tony_H

It makes you look at the other teams roster and see if you can find someway to counter. JOTB just sent me an offer that was for a player I don’t like who would be a down grade from what he wanted back by almost a point a game and was owned by 60+% less ownership and was adding in a slightly better catcher. I looked at his roster and was only interested in Mike Trout and might send him deal to see if he wants to upgrade his roster by selling off his best piece.
