Dan Vogelbach Tops the CCO’s Readers Poll

The votes were cast and have been counted and for the second year Dan Vogelbach was the top vote getter in the annual readers’ prospect poll.

PrintDuring Spring Training, the CCO asks our readers to vote on which ten players we should follow a little closer than others during the season and votes were received on the website, Facebook, and Twitter. The poll was closed last Wednesday and the results of this year’s minor league fan poll are now in. With 4,516 votes cast, Daytona first baseman Dan Vogelbach topped former teammate, RHP C.J. Edwards and current teammate Albert Almora with 413 votes. Jorge Soler and Pierce Johnson rounded out the top five.

The final voting broke down this way:

  1. Dan Vogelbach, 1B – 413
  2. C.J. Edwards, RHP – 369
  3. Albert Almora, OF – 318
  4. Jorge Soler, OF – 311
  5. Pierce Johnson, RHP – 298
  6. Arismendy Alcantara, 2B/SS – 265
  7. Rob Zastryzny, LHP – 248
  8. Eloy Jimenez, OF – 224
  9. Kyle Hendricks, RHP – 218
  10. Corey Black, RHP – 202
  11. Paul Blackburn, RHP – 182
  12. Dillon Maples, RHP – 176
  13. Jacob Hannemann, OF – 152
  14. Christian Villanueva, 3B – 150
  15. Jeimer Candelario, 3B – 143
  16. Duane Underwood, RHP – 139
  17. Tyler Skulina, RHP – 132
  18. Shawon Dunston Jr., OF – 122
  19. Ivan Pineyro, RHP – 95
  20. Stephen Bruno, IF/OF/C – 77
  21. Kevin Encarnacion, OF – 70
  22. Josh Vitters, OF/IF – 68
  23. Tony Zych, RHP – 67
  24. Ben Wells, RHP – 39
  25. Willson Contreras, C/IF/OF – 38

The top ten players will now be followed by the Down on the Farm Reports with stats updates every Monday. However, as in the past, when a player is not eligible for play, due to injury or his season not starting, he will be substituted with the highest vote getter outside of the top 10. Currently, Jorge Soler and Pierce Johnson are on the disabled list and not eligible and Eloy Jimenez’s season has not started yet. Soler, Johnson and Jimenez will be placed back in the feature when they return to the field. For now, Paul Blackburn, Jacob Hannemann and Christian Villanueva will take their place in the report with Dillon Maples also on the disabled list.

Really glad Eloy made the list. Would have liked to get coverage of Gleyber Torres as well but 1 out of 2 ain’t bad.

I feel some disappointment, because most of the top 10 we will hear a lot about plenty anyway. I would have liked to see the poll flipped :/

With injuries as a main factor, most of the players in the final poll makes it to the Top Prospect Watch at one time or another.

Big Dan is a fan favorite I think because of his body type and attitude….seems like a quality guy. But we can’t get too carried away on him as a prospect. With his bat as his only carry tool, he will have to hit a ton to make an impact. And even if he does, he’s as likely to be traded as he is to spend time at Wrigley.

The more he hits, the more we’ll also see questions related to whether he can change positions….which from what I understand even with the weight loss, the answer is a big fat NO from scouts. He’s a 1B/DH strictly.

I’m glad to see Vb our fan choice. The other game, I was wondering what will happen to Castro when both Baez and Bryant come up. That’s 3B and SS occupied. Castro may move to left, but I can see the management play Vb and his big bat. Maybe they will move Castro to second. That can be a hell of an infield with Antoine at first.

CJ and PJ will pitch up the ladder very soon, the Cubs will have two out of five taken care of. Call me thinking wishful, I’ll be happy to see the Cubs away from the doormat with young leaders coming on board.

Just remember the motto we all have to adopt and repeat until upper mgmt. listens: Let. The. Kids. Play.

Reminds me to ask… Where’s Logan Watkins?
