Spring Training Game Nineteen: Cubs (ss) (8-9) vs. Mets (ss) (7-8)

  • Game Time – 3:05pm CDT
  • Coverage – TV: None – Radio: None
  • Location – Cashman Field, Las Vegas

Chris Rusin (1-2, 8.22, 1.43) vs. Jenrry Mejia (0-0, 0.00, 1.50)

The Cubs full weekend of exhibition games continues this afternoon. The Cubs wrap up Big League Weekend at Cashman Field and host the Indians at Cubs Park. Rick Renteria’s half of the roster will be the visiting team in Las Vegas today after being the ‘home team’ on Saturday.

Kris Bryant is expected to start today’s game against the Mets. Bryant played in the field Saturday but did not receive an at bat after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

Neither the Cubs nor the Mets broadcast teams on either radio or television will be calling the game in Las Vegas this afternoon.

The Cubs will try to figure out the Indians’ pitching staff today. Cleveland has already beaten the Cubs twice this spring. After today, the Cubs will not see the Tribe until next spring. Justin Masterson makes his second spring start against the Cubs today. Masterson shut down the Cubs back on March 6.

Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies will have the call from Cubs Park on commercial free Comcast SportsNet and Mick Gillispie will be on the radio side for the Cubs-Indians game on Cubs.com.

This afternoon’s games all start with a pair of lefties, Travis Wood and Chris Rusin

Spring Training Game Eighteen: Cubs (ss) (8-9) vs. Indians (ss) (12-3)

After being just about as good it gets in Spring Training in his first Cactus League start, Travis Wood gave up a run in his first inning of work against the Rockies then allowed an Arizona triple on a ball that Junior Lake should have caught end his outing. Wood could not get out of the third inning and had to leave after hitting his pitch count in 2 2/3 innings.

Wood will be looking to bounce back this afternoon in his third spring outing. Look for Wood to target a five-inning outing this afternoon.

Justin Masterson makes his fourth Cactus League start today. Masterson has not allowed a run in three starts this spring. In eight innings, Masterson has allowed just four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Aaron Harang and the other half of the Indians roster, including Bryan LaHair, will spend the afternoon in Scottsdale taking on the Giants.

Spring Training Game Nineteen: Cubs (ss) (8-9) vs. Mets (ss) (7-8)

Chris Rusin makes his fourth appearance in the Cactus League and second start. Rusin really struggled in his first start against the Angels back on Feb. 28. But he was excellent in his last outing with three innings of shutout ball against the Giants. Rusin has allowed seven runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.

Chris Rusin has a legitimate shot at making the rotation as Jake Arrieta keeps trying to get himself ready for the season.

While Jon Niese is facing Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals in Jupiter, Terry Collins will hand the ball to Jenrry Mejia in Vegas. Mejia has made just one Grapefruit League start to this point of the spring. Mejia allowed one unearned run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts in two innings of work.

Carlos Torres and Rafael Montero are also scheduled to pitch for the Mets this afternoon.

Would love it if the Cubs could somehow get Masterson.

    • SuzyS

Was just thinking the same thing when I saw the match ups.
Also…hope BJAX has another good game…it would be nice to see him give the Brass something to think about.
Vitter’s traditional slow start is embarrassing…he could be playing himself onto a nice independent league team.

      • cubtex

agreed. Barring a trade..Vitters doesn’t have a spot on this roster. The last OF spot will have to be a LH bat. Otherwise the only LH bat on the bench would be Kottaras(who you can’t use all the time if you only keep 2 catchers) and the other LH bat could be Valbuena if he doesn’t start.

I would’ve loved to watch Bryant and Vogelbach play today. Seems like the split squad games always work out with the kids not being televised.

I know Shark has one extra year of control than Masterson ….but if the Indians are not able to extend him(but the Cubs will offer him what he wants) and the Cubs are not going to extend Shark…what about a Samardzija for Masterson deal? Indians would have him for an extra year and the Cubs would have a true #2 who is still 28. Just a thought.

Wood gave up 2 runs in the first inning. Jackson misplayed a ball in right that led to the two runs. Wood retired the side in order in the second and third innings.

Cubs up 2-0 in Vegas on a throwing error by the Mets’ shortstop

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Jackson with a nice opposite field double off Masterson in the third

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Wood struck out two of the three batters he faced in the 4th. Retired last 10 batters.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Cubs up 3-0 in Vegas. Donnie Murphy just went deep.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Rondon replaces Wood in the 6th. Good outing for Wood.

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I think Wood is going to show us last year was no fluke.

  • cubtex

    Vogelbach went deep!

    • cubtex

and just ripped a base hit on a 3-2 pitch to right center. He hit his HR to left field. Like how this kid uses the entire field.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Kalsih is have a good game in Vegas. So far, 1-for-1 with two walks, another stolen base and two runs scored

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Guy just makes things happen and doesn’t have to get hits to do it. Valuable asset.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Dan Vogelbach with a HR off of the Mets’ Rafael
Montero in the 4th inning of the game in Las Vegas.

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

anyone know Kelly Crull? If so, I am up for a double-date. Just sayin…

    • Tom U

      Interesting choice of words.

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

She used to do Thunder pre and post game .

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

Vitters with a HR here…I am calling it!

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

he got a walk. If the pitcher wasn’t so afraid of him to throw a strike, I am pretty sure he would have gone deep.

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

BJax with a HR…I am calling it!

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

      ahem. whiff.

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

first time I have seen Almora on tv…
he smacked the crap out of it, but right at CF.

I have to say that I can NOT wait for the competitive era to begin, with promising names in the lineup everyday that I look forward to seeing, vs the retreads we have as starters now.

Vitters, BJax, and Almora all hit, and I was genuinely interested in watching them. I have not seen Olt yet, but would have felt the same of him.

Add in Baez, Bryant, and Lake/Soler…that makes a lineup I am entertained by, regardless of the Cubs win-loss record.

First time seeing Vizcaino now too.

No more sweeney, valbuena, schierholtz, barney…ugh. boring.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Vizcaino is throwing heat, just walked Lindor.

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

yeah…he has velocity…just wondering if he has control or not. Couple balls hit deep and/or really hard off him, too.

    • Ghostdawg

Not just heat, but easy cheeze, looks effortless and his heater has sick movement. He will need some time in AAA to get his control/command back though…their is so much late break on his pitches that I don’t think he even knows where it’s going right now.

      • JasonOfTheBurbs

        like a not-so-skinny Juan Cruz.

        • Ghostdawg

Yep a bit, but Cruz threw 93-96 mph while Vizcaino throws 96-98+, and his delivery is much less effort so he should be able to find a consistent release point much easier than Juan Cruz could.

  • Tom U

Nice play by Dustin Geiger for the last out.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

      Agreed, very nice.

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

Ryan Sweeney favorite movie: Casino Royale.

2 words for ya, if you haven’t seen it: Vesper Lynd.

I understand his enthusiasm for the movie, but I still hope he is beaten out of his starting role soon!

    • Tom U

Moved up a notch in my eyes. I own every James Bond book written.

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

Nice! Villanueva almost gets HBP in the face, and stays right in there and leans in to chip the next pitch into CF for a hit.

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

lost video feed with bases loaded…BJax up.

Don’t worry though…the cubs have some great AV prospects coming up in the minors.

    Hit into DP.

    Almora up…c’mon!
