- Game Time – 3:05pm CDT
- Coverage – TV: Comcast SportsNet – Radio: Cubs.com
- Location – Cubs Park, Mesa
Jeff Samardzija (0-0, 6.39, 1.82) vs. Erasmo Ramirez (2-0, 1.42, 1.03)
The Cubs return to day baseball this afternoon after spending Tuesday night in Surprise and Wednesday night in Scottsdale. The Cubs have four day games before going back under the lights next Monday and Tuesday.
While Jeff Samardzija faces the Mariners this afternoon, Tsuyoshi Wada will get his work in a minor league game. Wada does not appear to be in the mix for the fifth spot in the rotation based on Jed Hoyer’s comments. Wada should be reassigned to minor league camp soon in order to prepare for the start of his season with the Iowa Cubs.
Mike Olt is expected to make his spring debut at third base this afternoon. Olt will reportedly play at least five innings at third. If all goes well, Olt should receive a bulk of the playing time at third base over the last 10 days of the exhibition season.
Today is the last time the Cubs will see the Mariners this year. The two teams do not face one another in the regular season.
Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies have the call on the television side this afternoon on Comcast SportsNet and Mick Gillispie has the radio call on Cubs.com.
This afternoon all begins with Jeff Samardzija …
Jeff Samardzija makes his fifth and his next to the last start in the Cactus League this afternoon as he prepares for Opening Day in Pittsburgh. Samardzija’s numbers this spring are not good. But he says he feels good, and that is what Spring Training is all about … a player getting his work in and staying healthy.
Samardzija has allowed nine runs on 18 hits with five walks and nine strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings over his first four starts. Samardzija faced the Royals his last time out and allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and only one strikeout. Everything was high last Saturday during his 3 2/3 innings in which he threw 87 pitches, 49 for strikes.
Spring Training stats are meaningless. With that said, it would be nice to see Jeff Samardzija pitch well this afternoon.
Erasmo Ramirez makes his fifth appearance, fourth start, in the Cactus League today for the Mariners. Ramirez has thrown the ball rather well this spring. In 12 2/3 innings, Ramirez has allowed four runs, two earned, on 11 hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Ramirez began camp as an option for the Mariners’ rotation and he appears to have earned a spot.
