Talkin’ Cubs Live – Cubs vs. Mariners – 03/20/14

Spring Training Game Twenty-Four: Cubs (10-13) vs. Mariners (14-6)

  • Game Time – 3:05pm CDT
  • Coverage – TV: Comcast SportsNet – Radio: Cubs.com
  • Location – Cubs Park, Mesa

Jeff Samardzija (0-0, 6.39, 1.82) vs. Erasmo Ramirez (2-0, 1.42, 1.03)

The Cubs return to day baseball this afternoon after spending Tuesday night in Surprise and Wednesday night in Scottsdale. The Cubs have four day games before going back under the lights next Monday and Tuesday.

While Jeff Samardzija faces the Mariners this afternoon, Tsuyoshi Wada will get his work in a minor league game. Wada does not appear to be in the mix for the fifth spot in the rotation based on Jed Hoyer’s comments. Wada should be reassigned to minor league camp soon in order to prepare for the start of his season with the Iowa Cubs.

Mike Olt is expected to make his spring debut at third base this afternoon. Olt will reportedly play at least five innings at third. If all goes well, Olt should receive a bulk of the playing time at third base over the last 10 days of the exhibition season.

Today is the last time the Cubs will see the Mariners this year. The two teams do not face one another in the regular season.

Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies have the call on the television side this afternoon on Comcast SportsNet and Mick Gillispie has the radio call on Cubs.com.

This afternoon all begins with Jeff Samardzija …

Jeff Samardzija makes his fifth and his next to the last start in the Cactus League this afternoon as he prepares for Opening Day in Pittsburgh. Samardzija’s numbers this spring are not good. But he says he feels good, and that is what Spring Training is all about … a player getting his work in and staying healthy.

Samardzija has allowed nine runs on 18 hits with five walks and nine strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings over his first four starts. Samardzija faced the Royals his last time out and allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and only one strikeout. Everything was high last Saturday during his 3 2/3 innings in which he threw 87 pitches, 49 for strikes.

Spring Training stats are meaningless. With that said, it would be nice to see Jeff Samardzija pitch well this afternoon.

Erasmo Ramirez makes his fifth appearance, fourth start, in the Cactus League today for the Mariners. Ramirez has thrown the ball rather well this spring. In 12 2/3 innings, Ramirez has allowed four runs, two earned, on 11 hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Ramirez began camp as an option for the Mariners’ rotation and he appears to have earned a spot.

So did Gretzky get traded or released?

    • Tony_H

Looks like traded in a minor deal.

      • MikeT_2008

Thanks, wasn’t sure if it was true or a case of a guy just messing with a friend.

      • Brp921

I don’t understand the trade. It’s not a big deal, but it just doesn’t seem to make sense if it’s straight up Gretsky for Scosia.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Gretzky is involved in a minor trade with the Angels. No other details yet.

      • Zonk

That smells like it has less to do with baseball, and more to do with the fact that Trevor’s dad lives in Orange County…….

      As I reported on Monday

      http://chicagocubsonline.com/archives/2014/03/cubs-farm-report-031714.php#.Uytl36hdWRg

The Kane County outfield is pretty well filled without Kevin Encarnacion, who is still recovering from an off-season accident.

There has been some speculation that the deal was made in order to spare the Angels the awkward situation of having to release their manager’s son.

If Scioscia does join the organization, it may bode well for 2013 17th round pick Kelvin Freeman. I don’t have any reports on Freeman’s spring, but with Scioscia available to play first at Boise, Freeman can skip straight up to Kane County.

If the Cubs do end up releasing Scioscia, it could be one of those “make good” type of situations with the Angels that can pay some dividends down the road.

Cubs assign LHP Tommy Hottovy to minor-league camp. Spring roster is now at 44.

There was a post about field conditions from a horrible winter. Here is an article that talks about what teams are doing to get ready for Opening Day.

From Bill Shaikin: Angels trade Mike Scioscia’s kid to Cubs for Wayne Gretzky’s kid. Seriously: 1B Matt Scioscia for OF Trevor Gretzky.

    • BosephHeyden

Ummm…yeah. “Seriously” is right. I don’t get this move at all. I get that it’s minor league, but that doesn’t make it good. Scioscia is a career .222 hitter in A Ball, while Gretzky is a .280 hitting outfielder in A Ball. And that’s not to mention that Scioscia is 25. I guess the extent of it is that now the Angels don’t have to release their manager’s son?

Ugh, for a team that hypes the minor league system, they don’t need to be pulling favors for other teams.

      • John_CC

        This move is utterly inconsequential.

      • Tom U

        See my post below.

The only thing that kind of irks me is that management got rid of Gretzky but loves a player like Jose Dore.

      • Swish23

why are we “helping” the Angels? why is the FO even spending the time and effort? should of included Smardz and EJax for Skaggs and Santiago if the Halos needed “help”.

        • Eugene Debs

          Boom.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Schierholtz with a two-out single, stolen base and holds at third on a single by Olt

  • BigJonLilJon

Olt’s single was a real solid one!!! Ball flew off his bat

  • BigJonLilJon

Shark at 59 pitches to get through 3. His pitch counts always scare me.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Lake with an excellent catch to take a homer away from Morrison

  • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Olt with any action at the corner?

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Just one play so far, ball went off his glove for an infield single. Not a routine play.

    Cubs lost 3-0 to Mariners on Thursday in the Cactus League …Jeff Samardzija: 2R, 6H, 2BB, 8K, 2WP, 5.1IP

Nate Schierholtz: 1-3, SB; Junior Lake: 1-3, 2B; Mike Olt: 1-3

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Overall how did Olt’s arm look? He make a few throws? Sorry Neil, in probably being impatient becaue I imagine your report will cover Olt in the field rather in depth but I can’t help myself.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Sorry for the delay. Olt did not make a throw today. Two plays, made one did not make the other.
