Rangers Claim Donnie Murphy Off Waivers, Cubs Release George Kottaras

According to multiple reports, the Rangers claimed INF Donnie Murphy off of waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Murphy is a straight waiver claim and Texas is now responsible for Murphy’s salary for the 2014 season of $825,000 plus incentives. The Cubs did not receive a player or cash in return from Texas.

The Cubs released George Kottaras and are on the hook for 1/4 of his $1.075 salary for this season.

With the two roster moves, the Cubs spring roster stands at 32 players.

Donnie Murphy and George Kottaras were on the 40-man roster and the two moves clears two spots on the roster. The Cubs will gain a third spot on the 40-man roster when Kyuji Fujikawa is placed on the 60-day DL.

The team will use two of the three spots for Emilio Bonifacio and John Baker. The Cubs now have the flexibility to add Ryan Kalish to the roster as well or Ryan Roberts, who remains in the mix for an Opening Day job with the Cubs. Chris Coghlan is also in the running for a back-up job with the Cubs but appears to be behind Kalish and Roberts at this point of Spring Training. While the announcement has not been made official, it appears Mike Olt has made the Opening Day roster.

I do hope Olt made the roster. Him at 3rd and Rizzo living up to his potential at 1st makes for a good start with the corners. Now, if the middle of the infield and the outfield starts playing well, we may actually have an offense.

So it’s looking like Olt and Kalish for sure have a spot, and Roberts/Coghlan make it if Barney or Schierholtz get moved as well. I don’t mind that, and I also like the move to keep Baker, as he’s had a much better spring.

I do like those moves and the way things are shaping up. I hope Olt and Kalish make it and I hope that Coghlan does too. Coghlan still has some potential, certainly more than Sweeney and Ray posted some of his career PH stats and they’re pretty solid.

If Castro, Lake, Rizzo and Olt are the “everyday starters”, that means that half of the regular lineup is 25 or younger. Castillo will be 27 next month. If Alcantara, Baez and Bryant are all up by the end of the year (not unrealistic IMO), that would be a very intriguing lineup to grow together.

I dont see Dan Vogelbach on the list above. What is his status? Was he optioned or reassigned, or is he still with the team?

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Vogelbach has been on loan for the day from minor league camp when he’s appeared in Cactus League games. Teams can borrow players from minor league camp during Spring Training to make sure there are enough available players to fill out the roster.

Vogelbach was not invited to camp and is not on the 40-man roster, so he cannot be reassigned or optioned.
