Daytona Cubs Announce Tentative Opening Day Roster

The reigning Florida State League Champions begin the defense of their title on Thursday at Brevard County and the Daytona Cubs released the roster manager Dave Keller should begin the season with on Sunday morning.

Top prospects Albert Almora, Dan Vogelbach, Jeimer Candelario and Rob Zastryzny highlight the D-Cubs’ first roster of the season along with infielder/outfielder Rock Shoulders and infielder Tim Saunders.

PrintArodys Vizcaino is on the D-Cubs tentative Opening Day roster as he continues to build back arm strength from Tommy John surgery. Vizcaino is on the Cubs’ 40-man roster and does not figure to be in High-A ball long if he dominates the way he should and does not have any setbacks.

The Daytona Cubs will begin the season with 13 pitchers and 13 position players on the active roster. The D-Cubs can carry 35 players on their reserve roster and 25 players on the active roster. Daytona cannot have more than two players with more than five years of minor league service time on the roster.

I get that he is young, but why not Almora at AA? He certainly performed well at A last year, and everyone keeps talking about how polished he is for his age, etc…

Just no room at AA right now, or taking their time due to his age?

    • Tom U

Almora has yet to play 100 games in his career, let alone a season.

      • Patrick_Schaefer

Is Rock Shoulders playing in the OF with Vogelbach at 1b?

        • Tom U

Rock has seen practice in the outfield. The Florida State League also employs a full-time DH.

He’s played more than Soler hasn’t he? And we always here the polished adjective about Almora, certainly not Soler.

        • Tom U

Stateside, yes Almora has more games than Soler. However, Soler was a pro for two years in Cuba before he signed with the Cubs.

          • Tony_H

Didn’t Soler also sit for awhile, while Almora was off playing with Team USA?

I don’t see Almora staying in Daytona long and honestly being in the same position as Baez was going into this year, looking very ready for the majors.

          • Tom U

Soler had to sit for a year to establish residency. I do agree that if Almora continues as he has previously shown, he will move up.

          • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Didn’t even think of that. Any records down there of his stats? Puig’s? How did they compare? I know as prospects Soler was the more sought after.

Indeed. Soler, Bryant, Rubi Silva, Andreoli are all likley at AA this year. Almora is still a 20yo. He likely wont be at Daytona too long.

  • SuzyS

It also surprises me a little that Austin Kirk is at Daytona…wasn’t he at Tennessee last year?

    • Tom U

      Split time between the two

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

Krist enjoyed a nice big-league stadium game against AZ yesterday…anyone else think he looked like he was built like a 2B though?
