Cubs Reassign Javier Baez to Minor League Camp, Seven Players Cut from Spring Roster

The Cubs announced the sixth round of spring roster cuts on Saturday morning. Javier Baez, as expected, was reassigned to minor league camp. Baez will begin the season as Iowa’s shortstop. If Baez continues to check boxes off his player development card, Baez will make his big league debut at some point during the upcoming season, likely in June after he passes the Super Two date.

The Cubs optioned RHP Blake Parker to Triple-A Iowa and reassigned non-roster invitees Chris Valaika, Jonathan Sanchez, Brian Schlitter, Casper Wells and Chang-Yong Lim to minor league camp.

With the seven moves the Cubs announced Saturday, the Cubs spring roster officially stands at 37 players.

Javier Baez hit .310/.310/.738/1.048 in 14 Cactus League games with three doubles and five home runs. Baez played two games at second bases while providing several of the big league team’s highlights this spring. This move should not come as a surprise, the front office has been very transparent about their plans for Javier Baez.

So with Blake Parker cut I guess it is between Cabrera and Rondon for last spot. Cabrera has pitched well this spring and being out of options I imagine he will make team.

  • cubtex

Blue Jays prospect Aaron Sanchez sent to minor league camp and will
begin season at AA, but scouts are raving about his stuff and polish.

I would still try and make him the centerpiece in a Samardzija deal. Get Sanchez and one of their lefties with other pieces.

    • J Daniel

Does not need to be two top prospects … Sanchez and another good one?

      • cubtex

Sanchez and Daniel Norris. That would be an excellent right hand arm in Sanchez added and guy in Norris who is lefthanded and has plus stuff but needs to refine his command. I would do that.

  • cubtex

One spot on position player side for Coghlan, Olt, Kalish, Roberts, D. McDonald.

    • cubtex

I think we can eliminate McDonald and Roberts. It wouldn’t surprise me if Coghlan makes the team over Olt and Kalish. Kalish and Olt should play everyday.

      • Tony_H

        C – Castillo, Kottaras
INF – Rizzo, Barney, Castro, Olt, Valbuena, Bonifacio
OF – Lake, Schiertholtz, Sweeney, Ruggiano, Kalish

I see a lot of different lineups with the flexibility of this group.

        • cubtex

I think GDUB is saying that Murphy and Valbuena are on. So 1 spot for Olt Kalish McDonald and Coghlan.

          • cubtex

and if that is the case….it should be either Coghlan or Kalish because they don’t need that many infield options. They would need a lefthand outfield bat.

          • Tony_H

            That would be Kalish.

          • cubtex

but remember. Sweeney Lake and Schierholtz mean limited ab’s for Kalish. Barring a trade…I see Kalish getting regualr AB’s in AAA and Coghlan being a pinch hitter and 5th outfielder

          • Tony_H

Sweeney is looking more like the 5th OF right now, until he starts having better AB’s.

          • cubtex

they need to trade Schierholtz or Sweeney

          • Tony_H

Schierholtz to Detroit makes so much sense, it is hard to believe it isn’t done. Then again, Barney to the Dodgers makes a ton of sense as well.

          • Tony_H

I haven’t read waht GDUB said, but I don’t see Olt and Murphy on the team together. If Murphy is in for sure, I think that means Olt is going to Iowa.

          • cubtex

            agreed. Murphy on…Olt to AAA

          • cubtex

those 2 links I posted with the open spots for both pitchers and position players were from his twitter account.

          • Tony_H

            I don’t see either.

          • Tony_H

I see, your posts were actually GDUB tweets.

You should identify them that, they look like your words.

          • cubtex

and that one from the previous thread about the Indians was mlbtraderumors.

          • Tony_H

You really should say that you are quoting other people. It looks like you are saying it, but you are just posting someone else’s words.

          • cubtex

            10-4. I guess I should.

      • BosephHeyden

I wouldn’t have even known McDonald, Roberts, or Coghlan was on the team until I just read their names.

        • cubtex

Coghlan has 29 ST AB’s and Kalish has 30. Obviously Kalish has performed better but IF he is not going to start ahead of Sweeney,Lake or Schierholtz..I could see them starting him in AAA.

    • Tony_H

If they keep Olt, Murphy will be gone. So both Olt and Kalish could make the team.

  • cubtex

Of 37 in camp, 18 pitchers, including 2 going to DL (Fuji, Arrieta). Likely 2 spots for Rusin, Grimm Rondon, Ramirez.

I guess GDUB is saying Cabrera is a for sure.

    • Tony_H

I think Rusin has grabbed the last spot in the rotation and with Parker sent out it clears it up a bit

      1 Samardzija
      2 Wood
      3 Jackson
      4 Hammel
      5 Rusin

      1 Veras
      2 Strop
      3 Russell
      4 Wright
      5 Villaneuva
      6 Grimm
      7 Cabrera

      • Ripsnorter1

DL Russell or get rid of him.

        • Tony_H

          That seems a little extreme.

Control his outings and don’t let him face that many RH’s and he will do fine and have teams wanting to trade for him this summer.

          • Ripsnorter1

He’s not healthy right now…bad shoulder.

            Neil Rameriz has pitched well.

          • Tony_H

I actually think Ramirez may sneak in the the bullpen and say bye to Cabrera, unless a spot opens up due to injury. But I bet they would use Rosscup to take Russell’s spot.
