Bryant, Soler and Almora Among First Round of Cubs Spring Roster Cuts

The Cubs announced the first round of spring roster cuts on Wednesday afternoon. The Cubs reduced their spring roster to 56 with the ten moves that were made.

CubsMesaLogo-pubThe Cubs optioned Arismendy Alcantara, Logan Watkins, Jorge Soler and Matt Szczur to minor league camp. Alcantara, Watkins and Szczur will likely begin the season with Triple-A Iowa and Soler is ticketed to begin the season with Double-A Tennessee.

Kris Bryant, Albert Almora, Eric Jokisch, Carlos Pimentel and Jeudy Valdez were reassigned to minor league camp. All five players were in big league camp on non-roster invitations.

Aaron Cunningham is no longer with the organization. Cunningham asked for and was granted his release.

With Wednesday’s roster moves, the Cubs spring roster officially stands at 56 players.

The option makes Alcantara the odds-on favorite for the first position player call-up.

Hopefully he goes down, plays well, and is the first one up. Time to start seeing the young guys at Clark and Addison.

As reported above … from Carrie Muskat: Soler optioned to Double-A Tennessee and Szczur, Alcantara, Watkins to Triple-A Iowa. Assignments could still change before the season begins.

any reason to send them down so soon, vs playing some more in ST games against mlb level players? DId they have to send them down now due to some “time served” clock ticking down?

They will get more reps in minor league camp. Nothing to do with a clock. And they will still see time in big league spring games, like the six this weekend. The moves could have waited until Monday.
