Spring Training Game Two: Cubs (0-1) vs. Angels (0-0)

  • Game Time – 2:05pm CST
  • Coverage – TV: MLB.TV – Radio: 720 WGN
  • Location – Tempe Diablo Stadium, Tempe

Chris Rusin (0-0, -.–, -.–) vs. Jered Weaver (0-0, -.–, -.–)

Cactus League play for the Cubs resumes this afternoon in Tempe against the Los Angeles Angels. Chris Rusin takes the hill for Rick Renteria as he tries to pitch his way onto the Cubs starting rotation.

The Cubs had an uneven game Thursday against a good Diamondbacks squad. Rick Renteria is running out a lineup this afternoon that features Javier Baez, Chris Coghlan, Ryan Sweeney and Darwin Barney. And on the pitching side, the Angels are scheduled to see a lot of lefties this afternoon after Rusin.

Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer will call today’s game on 720 WGN and the Angels’ broadcast can be seen on MLB.TV.

This afternoon all starts with Chris Rusin …

Chris Rusin pitched well over his first nine starts for the Cubs last season after he was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Rusin allowed 15 runs on 45 hits in 49 1/3 innings with 29 strikeouts and 19 walks in those nine starts. Rusin struggled in September to the tune of a 7.41 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in his last four outings of the year. Rusin ended up with a 2-6 record in 13 starts for the Cubs last season with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP (2-2 in seven road starts with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP).

Chris Rusin nearly made the Opening Day roster a year ago with a sensational spring. And he will try once again to make the front office think about sending him to Triple-A to start the upcoming season.

James McDonald is scheduled to follow Rusin this afternoon. McDonald is competing with Rusin and Carlos Villanueva for a spot in the rotation.

Zac Rosscup, Jonathan Sanchez and Tommy Hottovy are also on the pitching schedule for today.

The Angels begin their spring this afternoon determined to avoid the slow starts that have plagued them the past two years. The Angels have a lot of talent and the best player in the game on their roster but injuries and poor performances have kept them from meeting expectations the past two seasons.

Jered Weaver takes the hill for Mike Scioscia today and he is scheduled to pitch three innings. Weaver will face the following starting lineup:

  1. Chris Coghlan – DH
  2. Darwin Barney – 2B
  3. Ryan Sweeney – CF
  4. Nate Schierholtz – RF
  5. Donnie Murphy – 3B
  6. Casper Wells – LF
  7. Javier Baez – SS
  8. George Kottaras – C
  9. Chris Valaika – 1B

John Baker, Rafael Lopez, Logan Watkins, Ryan Kalish, Brett Jackson, Ryan Roberts, Arismendy Alcantara, Mike Olt, Jeudy Valdez, Josh Vitters, Christian Villanueva, Aaron Cunningham, Jorge Soler, Matt Szczur, Kris Bryant and Albert Almora are scheduled to be on the short trip from Mesa to Tempe.

  • Tony_H

Nothing like watching baseball after a long winter.

  • Tony_H

Barney beating out an infield single, good to see.

    • cubtex

that just increased his trade value :))

      • Tony_H

Top 5 prospect or don’t even bother calling us back!

        • cubtex

now I know you have been starting happy hour early on a Friday!!! It’s 5′oclock somewhere!

          • Tony_H

LOL! I have told you what I would like to see back, but 2 arms, hopefully in A Ball already. Neither would be on a Top 10 list, but both have upside. Honestly, might be less than Bromine.

          • cubtex

I am actually ready to put down a few. Been a long week. A few cocktails sounds good about now :)

          • Sonate

I hear ya! I’m gonna order a Hendircks martini right now.

  • Craig York

Rusin with a nice first inning. Also a good sign.

    • Craig York

      Well….

  • Tony_H

Wow, Barney with a long Home Run!

    • paulcatanese

beats hell out of a triple:)

      • Tony_H

I like Bonifacio and think he brings more to the table than Barney to bridge the gap until Alcantara or Baez take over 2B.

        • paulcatanese

Bonifacio would certainly not be lacking in the confidence area.

  • Tony_H

Trout just made Barney’s deep fly not look so deep.

    Grand Slam for Trout.

    • paulcatanese

Saw Trout’s HR on MLB, also saw Bryant’s.
Bryant’s was no slouch, almost straight away center, real power there, didn’t quite get to extend his arms.
Trout’s also hit very well, but he got to pull it.
Both were great, I give the power edge to Bryant, today anyway. The next game? Who knows.

  • GaryLeeT

    McDonald is a NRI, right?

    • Tony_H

Nope! Pat on the radio said he was on a minor league contract, but it has been reported it was a major league contract. Either way, they can cut him anytime.

    • Tony_H

He is on the 40 man roster.

      • Zonk

McDonald is in arb years, so if Cubs cut him before end of ST, they only owe him 45 days termination pay…or about $250K or so.

        • Tony_H

They can also cut him 15 days prior to the end of ST and only have to pay 30 days.

  • GaryLeeT

    Sanchez is a NRI, right?

    • Tony_H

      Yes

  • GaryLeeT

Looks like a Cub’s futures game out there. This is probably the first time all the top position player prospects have been in the field at the same time.

  • Eugene Debs

    We look great today.

    • Tony_H

Yeah and our best pitchers were brought along today.

Rusin, McDonald, Sanchez, a minor league guy brought along for the day Espino and now Hottovy. Good chance none of them will head north with the team.

      It is spring training.

  • cubtex

Vitters in at 1st! Nice! Love to see him make the team and sit Rizzo against some lefties.

    • cubtex

before the responses start…key word “some”

  • cubtex

    Tyler Beede 92-95 in a 1-2-3 first for @VandyBaseball

This is one of the guys who I am following this year.

    • TheWrongGuy

I am following him as well.
With the way he has been pitching he won’t be available when our Cubs pick at number 4.
and J. Hoffman of Eastern Carolina hasn’t pitched well, his stock is falling.

      • cubtex

Way early on Hoffman. He has only had a couple of starts.

        • TheWrongGuy

          true.
          But he hasn’t looked good.
          many walks and hits allowed.
I haven’t been keeping up on any of the other potential draft picks. But like last year where Bryant came up smashed everything in sight. There is a lot of time between now and draft day.

          • cubtex

Let’s see how he starts looking when the weather heats up on the east coast. It won’t be a bad thing if he slid to the Cubs. MVP of the Cape Cod summer league. 12 K’s per 9 and consistently 93-96.

          • Tony_H

Trying to figure the Top 4 at this point is impossible. Beede and Hoffman are 5th and 9th on this list and Trey Turner is 10th.

  • Tony_H

    Almora with a double!

  • Tony_H

Send him North with the team! Kris Bryant Home Run!

  • Craig York

    Kris Bryant!!!!

  • Craig York

Almora with the double, Bryant with a bomb, and a hard hit liner by Baez. Love seeing the kids play

    • Eugene Debs

      It’s refreshing.

  • paulcatanese

Yesterday,5-3, today 15-3, just spring training makes no difference. Right.

    • paulcatanese

Add this, Bryant hit a bomb, Baez hit the ball very hard and Almora with a double. Great, but will not bring them up until the dollar figures, the control is right.
Might just as well close you’re eyes when they are at bat, it makes no difference right now.

    • cubtex

Look at the roster Paul. No point to expect anything else. It is a last place roster. The team will struggle to score runs and the starting pitching will be awful. They will have a top 4 pick again.

      • GaryLeeT

As far down as 4th? Who says you aren’t optimistic?

        • cubtex

          hahaha.

  • jtrain23

Kris Bryant really has a pretty swing. He’s simple and effortless through the zone. You gotta love that easy power. That’s the kind of thing you can’t teach.
