From the Wire … Cubs Claim RHP Liam Hendriks Off Waivers from the Twins

According to multiple reports, the Cubs claimed RHP Liam Hendriks off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on Friday.

Liam Hendriks was designed for assignment on Dec. 5 to make room on Twins’ 40-man roster for RHP Phil Hughes.

With the addition of Hendriks, the Cubs’ 40-man roster stands at 39 players.

Liam Hendriks turns 25 on February 10 and is 6-foot-1, 205 pounds. Hendriks features a low 90s fastball, slider, cutter, curve and changeup.

Hendriks put together a very good season in 2012. In 16 Triple-A starts, Hendriks posted a 9-3 record with a 2.20 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Hendriks did not fare as well at the Triple-A level last year and went 4-8 in 16 starts with a 4.67 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.

Hendriks has struggled throwing strikes in the big leagues and was 1-3 in 10 games, eight starts, for the Twins last season with a 6.85 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP.

I actually like this pickup. He was a top 10 prospect for them and is still young. He has an option left so that is good. With Neil Ramirez, Loux,Hendricks and now the other Hendriks they will have some options at AAA.

Please help me think of a waiver claim by the Cubs, that has produced anything in the last 3 years.

      • cubtex

Valbuena? just kidding. With the lack of starting pitching in the system….this was a decent claim. Will he pan out? Who knows…but it was one of their better claims imo

        • GaryLeeT

No, I was really trying to think of one, and Valbuena qualifies as a decent waiver claim.

Donnie murphy too I guess. small sample size though

The Marlins did out right him, but I think Murphy was able to declare himself a free agent, because of time served, and was actually signed by the Cubs last year..

I’m impressed. You like a move of theirs.

      • cubtex

I call em as I see em. I don’t just say what a great move on anything and everything like some. Not going to mention any names. Can you digger? Lol

cubs also sign ryan Roberts (tat man) to minor league deal.

  • cubtex

Cubs also claimed Ryan Roberts who can play 2B,3B and outfield. He is the guy with all the tattoos. I like him as well. He plays hard and gets some clutch hits from time to time. That makes Donnie Murphy,Valbuena,Watkins with Barney who can all play 2B. Hopefully a trade is in the works sending Barney somewhere.

    Is Ian Stewart still available?

I think Liam is a great first name…so there’s that!
