The Cubs announced on Friday they signed former Diamondbacks and Rays’ utility man Ryan Roberts to a minor league contract. The deal includes a non-roster invite to big league camp.

Ryan Roberts, or TatMan, spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rays after he was traded to Tampa from Arizona during the 2012 season.

Ryan Roberts owns a .266/.341/.444 career slash line against lefties.

In other waiver claim news, the Braves announced they signed Mat Gamel to a minor league contract on Friday.

I said this on the other thread. With Roberts(who should make the club) Donnie Murphy,Watkins,Valbuena and Barney…that is 5 players capable of playing 2B. Anyone else think that a Barney trade could be coming?

      • JasonOfTheBurbs

        Yes. Barney for Cano!

        • cubtex

Lol. Infante signed with Royals so Yanks still need a 2B.

          • paulcatanese

That would be a good deal for
Barney, as soon as he puts the
pin stripes on he will hit the ball
            as Soriano did.

When I first saw the headline, I thought it said Bryan Roberts and my first thought was “Aha, it’s about time. I knew they could get him.” Then I looked closer at it. Damn!!!

    • cubtex

I actually would have liked BRIAN Roberts this year on a 1 year deal to play 2B and leadoff.

      • BosephHeyden

He’ll be coming to Chicago, but only if Jake Peavy comes with him.

Hinske and Roberts will keep the tattoo shops around Wrigley busy. They lost one of their better customers in Sveum but added 2.

By the way Neil. Great line using the word “INK” for Roberts.

    • Neil

Thanks man, I could not resist.

I had a feeling the Cubs would sign Ryan Kalish. No surprise there.

When I lived in AZ, I remember Roberts having a Mark Bellhorn-ish 2011 for the Dbacks. Wouldn’t mind him hitting in place of Barney, but he is really a utility guy. (but then again, so is Barney…lol)

He could play 2B against all the lefties at least!

Can also play a serviceable 3rd. At least hes not terrible defensively. Hes a lot like Murphy, maybe a little better power. Hed be worth it if you get the Roberts who played with the Snakes.

“Ryan Roberts owns a .266/.341/.444 career slash line against lefties.”

Curious, I checked the team stats against lefties of baseball, both leagues, between 2009-2013. Roberts really gained starting time since 2009.

It seems that a 785 OPS is way above average. The best team that owned lefties during this five-year span was the.
