The eighth annual AFL All-Star game takes place tonight at Surprise Stadium. The annual event was renamed the Fall Stars Game after being called the AFL Rising Stars Game for the first seven years. This year’s game will feature three of the top prospects in the Cubs system … Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler and Albert Almora.

All three prospects have created quite the buzz in the AFL this fall. Kris Bryant is tearing up the league and will start at third base and hit third for the East squad. After a slow start and a residency issue, Jorge Soler has been on a tear and will start in right field and hit seventh. Albert Almora is not in the starting lineup but will see playing time in the game.

Neil – Do you know how many of the players in the AFL All-Star game were just drafted in June like Bryant?

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Tony, not that I am aware of.

    • Tom U

Colin Moran was a 2013 first round pick by the Miami Marlins

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

        Thanks Tom

      • Tony_Hall

Is this normal for players to get drafted, play in the AFL and start in the AFL All-Star game?

        • Tom U

I’ll have to research that, but my gut feeling is no.

  • Denver Mike

Finally upgraded the cable package this month, great timing as I haven’t had MLB Network in almost 4 years. Definitely looking forward to seeing some of the kids in HD tonight!

  • CubbyDenCritic

Tribune has a story about the Cubs manager search and Theo is messing it up.

    • Tony_Hall

Here is the link to the article – http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-1103-haugh-cubs-chicago-20131103,0,7811259.column

It is written by David Haugh, so take it for what it is worth.

I wonder how many Boston sportswriters were saying how Cherington had failed having to fire Valentine, his first manager after only one year, just one year ago.

      • CubbyDenCritic

For what it is worth….Newspapers Editors tell their Writers if there is no news, you make it up then…………it is called “selling papers”.

        • Tony_Hall

I was talking about that he is not a baseball writer. I have yet to read one article from him on baseball that I found to be good. I doubt he even knows that unlike basketball or football, baseball teams have minor league teams.

      • Ripsnorter1

Cherington did fail in hiring Valentine. No question about that.
And any Boston sportswriter who did not point that out wasn’t doing his job.

  • CubbyDenCritic

I am standing as close I can get to my tv to catch some Arizona warm desert air.

  • Tony_Hall

From Sahadev Sharma – AJ Hinch sitting behind a couple Cubs higher ups while scouting the Fall Stars game. Wonder if they have anything to discuss…

  • Denver Mike

    Soler is tall!

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

He’s gotten a lot bigger since the spring. Not taller but bigger.

      • CubbyDenCritic

Better work off that big behind of his or he will have issues later on.

      • Tony_Hall

Here is the picture I took of him from just the other side of the fence at a Peoria game in Beloit. He is the type of athlete, who if he grew up in the US would be playing football, not baseball.

  • CubbyDenCritic

DeShileds misplayed that fly all the way……and Soler walked.

  • CubbyDenCritic

Seems there will be a good quality of late inning pitchers on the free market that Theo might go after……..but first…….need to resolve manager issue.

  • Denver Mike

Bryant’s throw there was really sharp

  • CubbyDenCritic

nice play by Bryant……and very good strong throw.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Bryant shows off his arm

  • CubbyDenCritic

Lets say Olt is having a good year……Byant is tearing up the minors……does Theo….
A – Trade Olt and bring up Bryant
B – Put Bryant in the OF at Wrigley
C – Leave Bryant in the minors

    • Tony_Hall

Most projections have Bryant ending up in RF. Bryant will be on the major league team when he is ready, regardless of what anyone on the roster is doing.

      • Tony_Hall

As I was saying, our future RF is Kris Bryant.

        Jesse Rogers @ESPNChiCubs
Ouch, ball thru Bryant’s legs brings home a run.
        7:53 PM – 2 Nov 2013

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Good shot of Jason McLeod on the broadcast.

    • Tony_Hall

I wish they wouldn’t give him ANY publicity.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

He’ll be a GM one day, but not as soon as some might think.

        • Tony_Hall

I hope he is our next GM, when Jed moves up a notch.

Why do you say not as soon? My guess is next off-season he will get his 1st interview and probably 2-3 years before he gets his chance.

          • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Tony, we are on the same page.

  • Tony_Hall

Buxton doesn’t look big enough to be a power hitter.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Error for Bryant, right under his legs.

  • MikeT_2008

Rough error on Bryant, but the play the prior inning shows he’s got some talent to play 3B. Guess it is a good problem to have to have good position players within the system

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Soler scorched that ball

    • MikeT_2008

I’ve heard tonight that both Bryant and Soler project as RFs. Does that mean one would slide over to Left?

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Most think Bryant will end up in right, yes. I would think the front office will take the same approach with Bryant and Soler as they are with Castro and Baez. Let both players develop and worry about moving one when there is a good problem.

        • MikeT_2008

Thanks Neil, I had just heard that during the broadcast tonight.

  • CubbyDenCritic

Bulls just gave a game away. Terrible.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Looks like Almora is on deck for Soler

  • Ripsnorter1

Zito and Vogelsong are both FAs now. The Giants said, “adiós, y no dejes que la puerta te golpee en la rearend cuando se vaya.”

Zito could look real nice giving up 3 run HRs in Wrigley. We could draft #1 ahead of the Astros.
And if we sign them both, we could have a HR hitting contest in Wrigley, with each seeing who gave
up the longest HRs in each start. That would perk fan interest.

    • tno13

I wish I were as clever as you think you are.

      • Ripsnorter1

You most certainly are. : )
