  • Game Time – 2:10pm CST
  • Coverage – TV: MLB Network, MLB.com
  • Location – Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale

Dallas Beeler (4-1, 2.49/1.34) vs. Eduardo Rodriguez (0-1, 5.52/1.50)

The 2013 Arizona Fall League Championship game takes place this afternoon at Scottsdale Stadium, the Spring Training home of the San Francisco Giants. At least two of the top prospects in the Cubs’ system are expected in Mesa’s starting lineup. Kris Bryant should be at the hot corner while Jorge Soler patrols right field. Albert Almora’s status for this afternoon’s game is unknown. Albert Almora left Thursday’s game with an undisclosed injury.

The Solar Sox won four of the seven games against Surprise this fall. And Mesa’s roster is made up of players from the Cubs, Angels, A’s, Nationals and Tigers’ systems.

The Solar Sox have not won an AFL Championship since 2003.

The Solar Sox have a very good lineup led by the Angels’ C.J. Cron and Kris Bryant. Both Cron and Bryant led the league in several offensive categories this fall.

Kris Bryant edged out Cron in the home run title. Bryant launched six dingers in 20 games while Cron hit five in 20 games. Bryant finished second in the league in doubles (8), seventh in RBI (17), eighth in walks (14), fifth in BA (.364), fourth in OBP (.457), first in slugging (.727) and first in OPS (1.184).

Dallas Beeler is making his seventh start of the fall today. After a rough start to the fall league, Beeler has settled down and pitched rather well. Beeler has allowed 13 runs, six earned, on 24 hits with five walks and nine strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

The Sox will face a tough left in Orioles’ southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez makes his sixth start in a Saguaros’ uniform this afternoon. Rodriguez has allowed nine runs on 16 hits with six walks and 16 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.

The AFL Joe Black Award for the Most Valuable Player this fall goes to Cubs Kris Bryant.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Mesa is the visiting team

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Bryant struck out swinging on a 1-2 pitch in the first inning. Fifth pitch of the at bat, went with three outside fastballs and fouled them off to the right side

  • CubbyDenCritic

    and Bryant goes down swinging,

  • CubbyDenCritic

    Almora injury update?

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Nothing official. ESPN Chicago reported he took BP and is available today.

  • CubbyDenCritic

Big game for Beeler…….will he pitch himself on Cubs 40 man roster?

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Good first inning for Beeler, kept the ball down and even picked up a strikeout.

  • CubbyDenCritic

MLB announcer compares Beeler with Roy Halladay………hmmmmm.

  • CubbyDenCritic

Soler reminds me of Pedro Cerrano.

    • cubtex

he looks like he has a lot of holes in that swing.

      • CubbyDenCritic

Allot of fans think we will see Soler & Bryant this year…….there is still allot of work to be done with both…….they need more mnor league at bats……….and Baez needs to shore up his defense.

        • cubtex

          Bryant is much more polished.

          • J Daniel

That is what going to college does for you. He will be up very soon.

        • bpot92

I dont expect Soler up this year. He really needs the most time out of Bryant Baez and himself. Almora and Soler need more experience due to age and in Solers case age and adjustment to America/Pro ball.

        • Tony_Hall

I have not seen anything that projects Soler to be up in 2014.

          Baez, Bryant, Alcantara, yes.

  • CubbyDenCritic

I would love to see the Cubs get Alfaro from Texas…..next big time MLB catcher.

    • bpot92

WHo would we trade for him? Dont know their system well so would it take a prospect or a Shark type trade?

      • CubbyDenCritic

Castro for Alfaro, Profar, L. Jackson and maybe another Prospect pitcher.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Texas is not trading him. He is viewed as their catcher of the very near future.

  • CubbyDenCritic

Early going here, Beeler pitches have very little movement.

    • cubtex

he needs to keep the ball down. If he elevates he gets hammered.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

That’s Dallas Beeler, not much swing and miss to his game. More of a crafty righty.

      • CubbyDenCritic

I think the Cubs seen enough of those type of pitchers……Bowden, Camp, …to name a few.

        • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

And I don not think he will be added to the 40-man roster by Wednesday.

  • CubbyDenCritic

So ….whoever wins this championship game, does the winning team players celebrate byspraying Arizona Ice Tea over each other in the clubhouse?

  • CubbyDenCritic

ha ha ha …two old ladies want to keep that bat……maybe they want to use it to holdup one of their garden grown tomato plants.

  • CubbyDenCritic

That Bryant needs more polish to his bats.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Excellent job by Beeler working out of the jam in the 4th

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Bryant got jammed on the 2-0 pitch with the bags jammed in the sixth and fouled out to first base.

  • cubtex

Soler and Bryant not shining in this game. Soler waived on that outside slider for strike 3 that was 2 feet out of the strike zone.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Some days are good and some not so good. The AFL has been a positive for both players and the other Cubs’ prospects.

      • cubtex

        yep. very true statement.

  • cubtex

This Urrutia is an impressive athlete.

    • cubtex

Nice investment for less than 1 mil by the Orioles.

Urrutia posted huge batting averages in Cuba and the 26-year-old
outfielder/first baseman hit .365 with seven homers, 20 doubles, and a
.958 OPS in 67 games between Double-A and Triple-A to earn the quick
      promotion.
He signed for less than $1 million, so the Orioles have to be pretty
thrilled with that modest investment right now as they look to the
left-handed hitter to provide a boost to what is an already dangerous
lineup. Baltimore scored the league’s third-most runs in the first half
and led the league in homers, but their designated hitter production has
been lacking and Urrutia figures to get a long look there
