Travis Wood (9-11, 3.05/1.11/3.91) vs. Kris Medlen (14-12, 3.32/1.26/3.59)
Prior to this afternoon’s game, the Cubs will recognize two of the top prospects in their system. Javier Baez and Kyle Hendricks were named the Cubs’ Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year and both players will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
The Cubs will also unveil the commemorative logo for the 100th Birthday of Wrigley Field. The Cubs plans for next season’s celebration will be released during the Cubs Convention in January.
The hitter splits against Kris Medlen are about as even as they can be. Look for Dale Sveum to run out a lineup packed with lefties, due to the power numbers that left handed hitters have put together against Medlen this season.
With a win this afternoon, the Atlanta Braves will be the NL East Champs and the Cubs will have to watch the celebration take place at their home park.
Today all begins with Travis Wood …
Travis Wood has two more starts left in what has been an excellent year for the young southpaw. Wood is coming off a solid outing against the Pirates after tossing seven innings of shutout ball in Cincinnati in his previous outing. Wood limited the Pirates to two runs on five hits in six innings. Wood issued two walks and struck out four batters. Wood has bounced back nicely this month following a rough August. Wood is 1-1 in his last three starts with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Over his last 20 innings, Wood has allowed 20 hits with four walks and 14 strikeouts.
Wood has already topped a career-high for starts in a single season and is just eight innings short of becoming the second starter on the Cubs’ staff to reach 200 for the year. While there has been more bad than good at the big league level for the Cubs this season, Travis Wood has definitely been one of the bright spots. Wood is 4-8 in 17 starts at Wrigley this year with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.
Travis Wood missed the Braves earlier this season and will face Atlanta for the first time in his career this afternoon.
Braves Career Numbers against Travis Wood
- Chris Johnson – 2-for-12 with a double
- Justin Upton – 3-for-10 with a home run and a walk
- Gerald Laird – 0-for-2 with a walk
- Jordan Schafer – 0-for-2
Kris Medlen has been solid for the Braves this season, just not as good as he was a year ago. Medlen has been just about unbeatable over his last 10 starts. The Braves are 8-2 the last 10 times Medlen has been given the ball and he has more than done his part. Medlen has allowed more than three earned runs only one time since July 28.
Medlen is coming off a four-hit shutout against the Padres. Medlen pitched into the eighth inning (7 1/3 innings) and issued only two walks while striking out five batters. Medlen is 8-3 in his last 11 games, 10 starts, with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP … and over his last three starts, Medlen is a perfect 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.
The Cubs missed Medlen in Atlanta earlier in the year and he makes his first start against the Cubs this afternoon. Medlen has faced the Cubs during his career and in five appearances out of the pen (7 2/3 innings), Medlen has not allowed a run and only three hits with no walks and five strikeouts (0.00 ERA, 0.39 WHIP).
