From the Wire … Cubs Option Eduardo Sanchez to Iowa, Add Thomas Neal to Active Roster

As expected, the Cubs added outfielder Thomas Neal to the 25-man roster on Tuesday. The Cubs claimed Neal off waivers from the Yankees on Monday and he will be available off the Cubs’ bench for the opener of the three-game series in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Eduardo Sanchez was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to make room for Thomas Neal on the active roster.

The Cubs added Eduardo Sanchez to the 40-man roster on July 26 and called him up from Triple-A Iowa. Sanchez made two appearances out of the Cubs pen while he was with the big league team. Sanchez allowed one run on three hits with no walks and one strikeout in three innings.

With the two roster moves, the Cubs have a five-player bench that includes Thomas Neal, Dioner Navarro, Cole Gillespie, Donnie Murphy and Logan Watkins. The seven-man bullpen now includes Kevin Gregg, Pedro Strop, Blake Parker, James Russell, Matt Guerrier, Hector Rondon and Michael Bowden.

Do we know what kind of player Thomas Neal is and why they picked him up? His minor league numbers are confusing. Seems like he can hit for average, but his power numbers seem all over the map.

He was a top 100 prospect in 2010. A change of scenery could serve him well. I have no idea about the power numbers, that is a great question.

For those wondering about Mike Olt, he has been off to a very slow start with Iowa. I think a September call up might not happen. His first 13 games with Iowa he is hitting .115 with 0 HR. This has been a lost year for Olt. I just hope his vision problems become a thing of the past.

    • cubtex

Right after I typed this, Olt has 3 extra base hits today including his 1st HR. Murphy’s Law. I should post this everyday :). Hopefully he gets hot

I know Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman had similar problems in their career and they seem to be OK.

        • cubtex

I think he will be fine. It’s been a tough year for him but he is a top prospect and the Cubs got him while his stock is down.

Seems normal, most things you type are proven wrong right after you type them :)

        • cubtex

Hahaha. That is one up on yours. Your posts are proven wrong while you are typing them.

I have figured us out….you are Harold Reynolds, the old ballplayer, who doesn’t want to hear the stats that disprove all the old theories, and I am Brian Kenny, telling them to you anyway, because I know the numbers tell the true story :)

          • cubtex

Harold is a former player like myself who knows there is alot more to baseball than computer stats.

          • Tony_Hall

Have you ever watched MLB Now with those 2 on it? Harold Reynolds says some of the stupidest things……and Brian Kenney tries to explain it to him…..over and over and over again.

          • Denver Mike

I think John Gustafson and Max Goldman in Grumpy Old Men is a more accurate comparison :)

          • texcubnut

            LOL! Zing….nice one Mike :)

        • cubtex

My phone wouldn’t let me reply to your last post. To answer your question. No. I don’t really watch Harold Reynolds and Brian Kenny

    • mike1040

I saw him play at Tacoma last night, and he was great at 3rd. He made a couple of Barney-like plays. I was really impressed.
