From the Wire … Cubs Call-Up Logan Watkins from Triple-A Iowa

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have called up infielder Logan Watkins from Triple-A Iowa to take Luis Valbuena’s spot on the active roster. Luis Valbuena will be placed on the 15-day DL with a right oblique strain.

Logan Watkins has spent the entire season in Iowa and hit .243/.333/.379/.711 with 18 doubles, seven triples and eight home runs.

The 23-year old (August 29, 1989) was the 21st round pick of the Cubs in the 2008 draft. Logan Watkins can play shortstop, second base and the outfield. Watkins has played one game at third base in his minor league career.

Logan Watkins was already on the 40-man roster so the Cubs did not have to make a corresponding 40-man roster move to call him up.

The Cubs should make two more roster moves before Tuesday’s opener in Philadelphia. The Cubs have been playing with a short bench due to carrying an extra reliever in the bullpen.

Neil, this would be an option on Watkins?

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

The Cubs optioned Watkins down to Iowa out of Spring Training. This season is his first of three minor league option years.

      • Tom U

        Thanks

  • Tony_Hall

About the only option right no, without making a 40 man roster move. Very likely Watkins finishes the year on the team. I can see Barney and him platooning at 2b until Alcantara is ready in about a year.

    • JimBo_C

If Watkins does OK then they might cut bait on Ransom (let Watkins and Lake play 3B).

      • Tony_Hall

No doubt Ransom and Murphy are just roster fillers right now. But they could make it until rosters expand and get to finish the year out.

        • JimBo_C

They might be forced to make some choices when/if Valbuena, Bougesevic and Sweeney return this month before rosters expand.

  • J Daniel

What other 2 roster moves are anticipated?

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

I would think Sappelt up and a reliever out. They have been carrying 13 pitchers.

      • Tony_Hall

What about Bogusevic and/or Sweeney? I would think they will be added back when they can and Gillespie will be gone as well.

        • Tom U

Tony, neither Bogusevic nor Sweeney have seen any action in rehab yet. They will both probably get some AB’s in Arizona before they come off the DL.

        • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Sweeney was placed on the 60-day DL on June 30. He cannot be activated until August 30.

Bogusevic will need sometime on a rehab assignment as Tom pointed out, he’s been out too long. I have not seen a timeframe on his possible return

Wow, off the plane and on the field, that’s good, don’t give them a chance to think about it.
Watkins at 2nd, maybe he can at least hit a little better.
Murphy at short, the team can look forward to less sunflower seeds on the ground, and more attention to the game. Hopefully he won’t be as bored as Castro appears to be out there.

    • Tony_Hall

This allows Castro to get off days the rest of the way out. Barney might need to accept that he could be a utility, defensive specialist moving forward. Of course he could have a very long career doing that, as his glove is gold.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    This is interesting …

From ESPN Chicago: Not out of the realm of possibility to see Barney at SS for a day and Watkins at 2nd. Next time days off come etc.,per Sveum

Cubs said in the spring that Barney would not be seeing anytime at short because he is their everyday second baseman.

From Bruce Miles: Sveum says Barney is Cubs second baseman and Watkins will see most of his time off bench

  • Tom U

Congratulations to Danny Lockhart, who was promoted to Iowa all the way from Boise to correspond with Watkins’ promotion to Chicago.

Lockhart is batting .309 for the Hawks and is a Northwest League All-Star

    • Tony_Hall

Wouldn’t this be more about roster filling and not wanting to promote someone from AA today?

      • Tom U

Of course. Boise is in Everett and Iowa is in Tacoma. It’s an easy logistical move.

It still is a nice reward for someone who has worked this hard.

        • Tony_Hall

I would agree, it says he has the maturity to handle it. Good experience for sure.

  • Tom U

In another possible promotion alert, Dan Vogelbach was pulled in the fifth inning of last night’s game. I haven’t found out if it was due to injury or anything else. Vogelbach has played 106 games and the Cougars were already leading 6-0 at that point.

  • Patrick_Schaefer

Looking at his minor league stats Watkins has had a consistently good obp. Theo and Jed love that. Barney and Castro don’t take many walks. He hasn’t hit great this year. 243 batting average but even with the low average he still has a. 333 obp. Interested to see how his hitting progresses after some time with Sveum. Hopefully he can stick as a utility guy or push Barney for the starting job at 2nd. I like Barney for his + ++ defense but he just doesn’t hit enough to b a starter.

    • J Daniel

This is an example of why cubtex and I were saying be careful with all of the wishes for Castro to be moved. We could have a .243 hitter at short. I know Rip, before you point out, Castro’s average is not great this year. I think it has more to do with trying to fit the Cub way rather than just hitting. Just my humble opinion.

If he never has an high opb how about bat him 7th or 8th and let him just hit. He would put up darn good numbers for a guy in that spot.

I would love to see him when the stakes are higher and then make judgement. Lets face it, not much to really play for last couple of years. I know about its his job, personal satisfaction, and whatever else. Bottom line he is still really young.

Probably best to keepBarney as regular now but would love foe them to let Watkins go. Same as Lake, play so well they can’t send him back.

Nice to see a Cubs “in house” guy come up…even if he hasn’t set the world on fire.
I’m still waiting to see what happens between BJAX and Matt Szczur….I’d like to see Szczur finish at Iowa…to position himself for a call up sometime next season.

  • Brian

Any word on Austin Kirk? I can’t seem to find why he is on the 7 day DL.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

I have not seen the official reason as to why he is on the DL, sorry.
