Report: Cubs Close to Trading Carlos Marmol to the Dodgers

According to a report from Bruce Levine, the Cubs are close on a deal that would send Carlos Marmol to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Levine’s report has been confirmed by Jon Heyman and Peter Gammons since it hit the wire.

Carlos Marmol has drawn interest from at least three teams since the Cubs designated Marmol for assignment last Tuesday.

According to Bruce Levine, it is “unknown which player or players the Dodgers would send to Chicago.”

Carlos Marmol is owed around $5.4 million of his $9.8 million contract for this season. According to Levine’s source, the Dodgers would absorb some of the money still owed to Marmol.

The Cubs have not commented if a deal is in the works for Marmol or not according to Carrie Muskat.

Coletti’s way over matched as a GM. Maybe the Cubs will get something useful in return besides salary relief.

    • calicub

Though he was able to outwit Hendry with that theriot lily for DeWitt

      • texcubnut

That’s not sayin’ much, Calicub. :)

  • Neil

Patrick Mooney has also confirmed Levine’s report. Says deal is very close.

Steve Clevenger left the I-Cubs clubhouse with his bags packed according to a report from Iowa

    • Suzy S

Clevenger on a call up or trade????

      • Neil

Neither as it turns out. Exactly what I reported yesterday. He is hurt. Here is the follow-up from Iowa

Clevenger said he’s been hurt and was sent to his hotel to await word in what he’ll do next. Not being called up.

        • Suzy S

Thanks Neil, I missed your report yesterday.

          • Neil

No worries, I hope all is well with you.

  • GaryLeeT

It’s not the Todd Hundley miracle, but if they move Marmol rather than release him, it will be impressive.

    • Sonate

Agreed. (I assume it will not be for a bag of baseballs!)

      • paulcatanese

No, the Dodgers know they have to have enough there when Marmol shows up:)

        • Ripsnorter1

He’s going to out pitch Shawn Camp the rest of the year. He’s already outpitched him thus far.

          • Theboardrider

I agree with that. Still he has to go. Getting anything in return for him will be a small miracle.

          • paulcatanese

Don’t know if the Cubs and Dodgers play again this year,
but what a trip if the game depended on the both of them facing each other, could be a record number of runs scored in the ninth inning.

        • Dorasaga

          That’s a good one.

  • paulcatanese

Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the nineteen fire fighters that lost their lives in the Arizona Wildfires.
Redding and surrounding areas are prone to many of these fires and I am proud to say we treasure these young men and women who fight these. It is painful to hear of these things happening, but very thankful that they do a very difficult job.

  • Neil

Theo was just on with Kap, said nothing is done regarding a
deal for Marmol. Epstein said they might be getting close to something but it
would not be a significant move, more about moving money. Epstein mention Cubs
could receive a change of scenery guy. Not a major deal by any stretch.

    • Ripsnorter1

We really don’t expect any DFA guy to net a major haul anyway. But let’s see….who in Dodgerland needs a change of scenery?

Jerry Hairston, Jr? LOL .265 with lousy .333 slugging.

Luis Cruz, hitting .127 with .169 slugging in 118 AB? Wow! Makes Valbuena look like All-World at 3B.

More likely Brandon League, who is Shawn Camp terrible. Get this: 3.99 K/9 IP from your closer!

Or maybe we just get Ted Lilly back…..

      The suspense is killing me!

      • RynoTiger

mlbtraderumors predicts it could be recently DFA’d Matt Guerrier

        • Theboardrider

Valbuena has been more than serviceable this year. I think it’s time to stop making him the brunt of jokes…

        • Theboardrider

Guerrier doesn’t fit the bill. At least get someone young…

          • RynoTiger

that Puig has been dreadful..I think the Dodgers would be wise to dump him now in this trade

          • Bredstik

I would be fine letting the Dodgers decide which of their 4 starting OF’s they no longer want! Puig, Crawford, Kemp, Ethier. Your choice Coletti!! :-)

  • Theboardrider

    Barrett Loux dealing again…

  • Neil

    Latest on Marmol

Five teams discussing a deal for Carlos Marmol with the Cubs according to David Kaplan. Dodgers are being most aggressive.

  • J Daniel

Let’s face it, they will not get any value in return for Marmol. I know we all hope they will get a prospect that will turn into a star but it is not going to happen.

    • BosephHeyden

I don’t think anyone expects anything more than salary relief or a C level prospect.

      • Theboardrider

Id take a C prospect. What a shame though. Speing training last year could have really gotten someone. But they were still feeling things out and there may have been a fan mutiny at the time. Especially after Ryno didnt get job.

      • RynoTiger

I’m expecting a player that is somewhere between Puig and CCO’s Neil.

        • Dorasaga

          Neil in a heartbeat.
