From the Wire … Cubs Recall Dave Sappelt, Place Ryan Sweeney on the 60-day DL

The Cubs recalled outfielder Dave Sappelt from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday as expected to take the place of Ryan Sweeney on the active roster. Sweeney was placed on the 60-day DL with a broken rib. Sweeney will miss a minimum of eight weeks for the injury he suffered running into the wall on Saturday night in Seattle.

By placing Ryan Sweeney on the 60-day DL the Cubs opened a spot on the 40-man roster for RHP Matt Guerrier, who was acquired from the Dodgers on Tuesday for Carlos Marmol.

Dave Sappelt began the season on the 25-man roster but was sent down to Iowa in May. In 52 games with the I-Cubs, Sappelt hit .269/.311/.398/.709 with 12 doubles, three triples and two home runs.

With all of the moves on Tuesday, the Cubs 40-man roster stands at 40 players.

Jed Hoyer addressed the Cubs plans for the rotation on Tuesday afternoon. The Cubs are going to stretch out Carlos Villanueva so he can start again. Chris Rusin appears to be going start to start … that is until the Cubs’ trade Matt Garza.

Matt Guerrier and Pedro Strop are expected to join the Cubs on Wednesday in Oakland.
