Cubs Sign First-Round Draft Pick Kris Bryant

According to reports from the Tribune and Jim Callis of Baseball America, the Cubs have signed first-round draft pick Kris Bryant. The Tribune reported that Bryant is taking a physical on Wednesday and the deal is expected to be announced soon.

According to Baseball America, Kris Bryant signed for his slot value of $6,708,400.

As Jon Heyman reported, Bryant’s signing bonus is the largest under the new system surpassing Mark Appel ($6.3 million) and Byron Buxton ($6 million) but the Cubs did not overpay Bryant and in fact signed him to slot.

The Tribune reported the signing would not be announced on Wednesday.

See? Some of you were worried this wasn’t going to get done. I don’t know why.

Yeah, boras or not, the way the system is set up now, Bryant had no leverage.

I’m glad he’s finally signed and it will be interesting to see how quickly he can warrant promotions through the farm system!

The good news keeps coming! Kudos to the FO for a dynamite few weeks.

Now if we can just get the Jimenez signing official.

I think it’s great for these guys to start coming up amongst other future stars. It’s got to be hard to be Baez, or Castro (when he was in the system) when you know you are so much better than all of your teammates. Not saying it’s a cockyness thing, it’s just the truth, or at least the perceived truth. All the focus is on you because nobody is interested in your teammates. Now guys like Bryant, Torres, Jimenez, Almora and Soler will have others around them that are under the same microscope. I don’t know but to me it seems to be a better environment.

I can’t wait to see this guy at Wrigley

    Love this pick

Whew! Big relief. What with Boras’ reputation and last year’s Houston’s failure to sign Mark Appel, I was nervous. Glad that it is all over.

Either way. Next year’s #3 wouldn’t have been bad. Potentially 2 picks in the top 5.

The front office did their job on this, nothing less, nothing more. If they didn’t sign the second overall pick in the draft, then we’d have major issues not easily masked by a bevy of unproven 16 year old signings. This needed to happen.

And, if he’s what he should be, he should be a major leaguer in about a year. College players have already taken on proven competition in larger-than-average situations. Great college players have obviously excelled in those situations. They should start him, at absolute minimum, in High A with a low threshold for promotion.

Hoyer says Bryant would prob start in Boise rather than Kane County since he hasn’t played since late May.

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

staying at 3B? any rumblings on where Cubs project him to play?
We could use an everyday upgrade at 3B, despite the reasonable job Valbuena has been doing.

      • Neil

Cubs project him as a third baseman. McLeod said he made big strides this past year and they feel that is his best position.

  • Ripsnorter1

Okay! Glad this is over with. Now let’s get a bat in his hand and let him hack away.
