Kane County Cougars Release Preliminary 2013 Opening Day Roster

The Kane County Cougars released their preliminary Opening Day roster on Monday afternoon. The Cougars have to make one more roster move prior to Thursday’s season opener at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark against the Quad Cities River Bandits.

The team announced a list of 26 players that will comprise the Opening Day roster. Mark Johnson will lead the Cougars this season after calling the shots for the Boise Hawks last year. Ron Villone (pitching coach), Tom Beyers (hitting coach), Shane Nelson (trainer) and Mike Megrew (strength and conditioning coach) rounds out the Cougars’ coaching staff.

The Opening Day roster will feature several of the top prospects in the Cubs’ system: Dan Vogelbach, Jeimer Candelario, Marco Hernandez and Gioskar Amaya along with one of the top pitchers in the system, Pierce Johnson.

The active roster limit for Single-A teams is 25 players, with a 35-player reserve roster limit.

Just to clarify, does, “The active roster limit for Single-A teams is 25 players, with a 35-player reserve roster limit.” mean 10 players over the active roster, or 35 players over the active roster?

10 over the 25-man active roster … a total of 35 players, like the 40-man big league roster.

      Sorry for the confusion.

        Neil,

Do you have any idea why Jeffry Antigua is starting at low A? Makes no sense to me considering his record the last 2 seasons.

I was thinking he would start in High-A. I have not seen or heard an official reason as to why. The front office might want to see him first hand, and he could skip Daytona. It is always better to promote a player than to demote one. I like his arm and I do not think he will be there for long.

It makes me feel old when I see guys like Ron Villone and Mark Johnson as coaches.
