From the Wire … Cubs Claim Julio Borbon Off Waivers from the Rangers, DFA’d Alberto Gonzalez

According to multiple reports, the Cubs claimed OF Julio Borbon off of waivers from the Rangers on Friday. Texas designated the former first round pick (2007) for assignment on April 9.

The Cubs will have to open a roster spot before they can officially add Julio Borbon. The Cubs 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players.

Updated 1:22pm CDTCubs DFA’d Alberto Gonzalez to make room on the 40-man roster for Julio Borbon.

Julio Borbon spent last season at the Triple-A level. Borbon posted a .304/.349/.433/.783 line in 126 games with 23 doubles, eight triples and 10 home runs. Borbon managed a .270/.305/.348/.654 line in 32 games for the Rangers in 2011.

Borbon has not been able to play to expectations and both Craig Gentry and Leonys Martin passed him on the Rangers’ depth chart. Borbon turned 27 in February (February 20, 1986).

    H-E-Double Hockey Stick!! Yeah!!

I;ve been extremely busy for the past few days but when I saw the rangers put him on waivers deep down I hoped the Cubs would snag him!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Penrod/700030874 Jason Penrod

When I saw that the rangers DFA’d him, I was hoping the Cubs would make a move. This is the kind of move that could really turn out great. I’m tired of the re-treads like Kevin Gregg.

    • Ray Ray

He is a career 1.6 WAR guy who might push them from the 3rd pick next year to the 4th. Don’t like it one bit. They need to add negative WAR. Remember who cares if they 67 or 70. Lets lose 55. LOL. Just kidding Jason. I actually like the claim. This team needs speed in the worst way.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Penrod/700030874 Jason Penrod

I like his age: 27, and his potential. He was a former 1st round pick. These are the kind of moves they need to make. Not similar players who are over the hill (in baseball age). From what I’m reading, alot of Astro fans are made that they missed out on this pick-up. Let’s hope they mess up again and pick Appel instead of Gray! We can only be so lucky.

(editor’s note: If Appel turns out to be a HOF pitcher, I never said this) lol

        • Ray Ray

You like Gray over Appel? Why?

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Penrod/700030874 Jason Penrod

Just a hunch. The guy is a power pitcher with a 101 mph fastball. The scouting reports Ive read have them both at 1 and 2, and they said it could go either way.
I’ve read where some are comparing Gray to Roger Clemens. Maybe it’s a little early for that, but that shows very great potential.
1.19 ERA and 81 K’s in just over 60 IP. not too shabby.

          • Ray Ray

I just hope they take either one of those 2. They need a college pitcher who is on the fast track and both of these will be.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Penrod/700030874 Jason Penrod

Judging by what Theo and Hoyer have said recently, they won’t take a pitcher 1st round… I’m hoping its a bluff to throw other teams off. The only other players worth a high pick are outfielders. And we seem to have plenty of those coming up.

          • Ray Ray

Theo was at Appel’s last start. I doubt they would pass up Appel or Gray.

        • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I posted on an earlier thread that I live in Oklahoma and am a huge Sooner fan. I hear great things about Gray. Kind of the anti-Appel. Very humble, great teammate who doesn’t think he’s bigger than the team. If the two have similar measurable’s, I believe Gray certainly wins out in intangibles.

The Cubs have enough egos to massage in the minor league system. Let’s get Gray and not have one more to worry about.

My guess is Sappelt or Cody Ransom?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Penrod/700030874 Jason Penrod

Can they drop Clevenger from the 40 man? I know he’s injured…

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Clevenger was placed on the 60-day DL. Players on the 60-day DL do not count against the 40-man roster.

A player on the 60-day disabled list does not count against either the 25-man or 40-man roster. A player may be activated beginning Day 61, though the club is not required to reinstate him at any specific time. A player placed on the 60-day list after August 1 remains there for the rest of the season.

There is no limit to the number of players a club may put on the 60-day list, but a player may not be placed on (or transferred to) the 60-day list unless the club’s 40-man roster is full. Once the season ends, a player on the 60-day disabled list must be reinstated to the 40-man roster or designated for assignment.

    • DWalker

Thinking sappelt as well, though I think he’d have to pass through waivers. This seems like a good pickup for a backup outfielder.

    • Ray Ray

I think it almost has to be Sappelt. Ransom will be gone once Stewart is brought up.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Alberto Gonzalez has been DFA’d

    • Ray Ray

They will carry 6 outfielders? I didn’t see that one.

      • John_CC

Seriously doubt they will keep six OFers. When these guys make roster moves they are usually in bunches…stay tuned.

        • Ray Ray

agreed. It cannot be for long.

  • John_CC

Ranger had high expectations for Borbon a couple years ago. Seems like he could be a great role player, he’s got serious wheels. Maybe not Campana wheels, but at least he can hit more than Campana.

    • Ray Ray

He dropped a fly ball in CF on opening day a couple of years back and fell out of favor with the Rangers. Definately worth a look

  • Ray Ray

You would think that maybe a trade of one of the outfielders could be in the works. DeJesus? Would be a good time to deal him. Borbon is a true CF,lead off hitter and bats left.

    • Ray Ray

Those who put thumbs down. Explain? They have 6 outfielders now.

      • DWalker

I had the exact same reaction that a trade is in the works. Soriano doesn’t sound like he wants to move right now and he doesn’t have any value. DeJesus is the one that leaps to mind as a having enough value to trade right now.

        • Ray Ray

DeJesus has been hitting lately and some teams like the Rays(who are suposed to contend) are struggling big time offensively. Now might be the time. They cannot carry 6 outfielders for too long. Sappelt will probably clear waivers though if they need to go that route.

DJ is an on base machine

      • Brp921

I don’t understand some of these down votes either. I have at times mistakenly hit the down arrow instead of the reply link when commenting from my phone before . That could be one explanation.

      • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I’m thumbs up Ray. Sooner or later Dejesus will go and I believe we’ll get some decent prospect for him. The guy can help a winning team

    • John_CC

Agreed that DeJesus is the obvious one to move. But I think it’s a little early, DeJesus will have more value later in the season.

  • Rational Logic

Wonder what Brett Jackson is thinking. Extremely crowded outfield somewhere. I’m sure another move will follow.

    • Tony_Hall

BJAX needs to keep working on making contact, until he figures that out, it doesn’t matter who is on the major league roster. If he does figure it out, it won’t matter either, as his all around game is going to get him a starting job, it’s just his swing and miss bat that is stopping it.

      • DWalker

Has Jackson shown any improvement over last year in regular season games? It sounded liek he looked better in spring training, but now it sounds like he hasn’t improved.

        • Tony_Hall

          45 PA’s
          15 K’s
          33% K’s

Scary but that is an improvement. He doesn’t need the number to be even good, but that is still too high.

  • Tony_Hall

Sappelt has 2 option years left. He can be sent to the minors without clearing waivers.

Here is Neil’s 40 man roster page with all the info.

  • Aaron

Love this move….Gonzalez just didn’t fit…not with Valbuena, Castro, Barney, Ransom, and Stewart (soon to come back), there wasn’t much need for him. Plus, they also have Watkins, Lake, Vitters, and Villanueva on the 40-man if they had to reach for someone.

My guess is DeJesus, Soriano, or Hairston are likely goners….there’s no need for them anymore, even as a “veteran presence”. Borbon adds a speed element the Cubs are currently lacking, but he’s a HUGE upgrade hit-tool wise over what they had before in Campana

  • Tom U

Neil, do you know how many options Borbon has?

    • Ray Ray

      He has zero left Tom.

      • Tom U

        Thanks Ray

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Tom, Borbon is out of options

  • daverj

Perhaps the Cubs are planning to flip Borbon. I think there were a few teams interested, but the Rangers weren’t satisfied with the potential return. Perhaps the Cubs think it’s a piece they might want.

  • WidespreadHisPanic

    Nice move :)

  • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I like the move. I think this kid has tons of potential and he’s proven he can play in MLB. A change of scenery could serve him well. If he can return to form we could have our CF of the future.
