As expected, the Cubs placed Darwin Barney on the 15-day DL on Monday morning. Barney injured his left knee while trying to catch a ball in foul territory during the third inning of Saturday’s exhibition game in Houston. Barney needed five stitches to close a gash in his knee.
The Cubs purchased the contract of Alberto Gonzalez from Triple-A Iowa and added him to the 40-man roster. To make room on the roster, the Cubs designated Robert Whitenack for assignment and removed him from the 40-man roster. The Cubs’ 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players with the addition of Gonzalez and Whitenack being DFA’d.
The Cubs backdated Darwin Barney’s DL stint to March 31. Brent Lillibridge is expected to receive a bulk of the playing time at second base while Barney is out.
Alberto Gonzalez is with the team in Pittsburgh and will be on the active roster for Opening Day. Gonzalez figures to see time against lefties. Gonzalez can play shortstop, second and third base. Gonzalez hit .267/.314/.422/.736 with four doubles and a home run in 24 spring games (45 at bats).
Gonzalez owns a .242/.279/.317/.596 line over six big league seasons (402 games) with 44 doubles, seven triples and three home runs.
Robert Whitenack should pass through waivers and will be outrighted to Double-A Tennessee.
