Cubs Minor League Roster Moves

With Opening Day for the minor league teams on Thursday, the Cubs have just about finalized the Opening Day rosters for the top four teams in the system … Iowa Cubs, Tennessee Smokies, Daytona Cubs, and Kane County Cougars. And with setting the rosters, several players throughout the organization have been released.

Hayden Simpson, Dontrelle Willis and Michael Brenly made headlines for obvious reasons over the weekend when they were released, but several other minor league players were also released including outfielders Nelson Perez and Elieser Bonne and RHP Jay Jackson.

One of the more surprising releases was that of Jay Jackson. The Cubs selected Jackson in the ninth round of the 2008 draft out of Furman University. Jackson posted very good numbers in the lower levels of the minor leagues before struggling mightily once he hit the Triple-A level. Jackson was once considered one of the top prospects in the game as Baseball America ranked Jackson as the 98th best prospect in baseball prior to the 2010 season. Jackson dealt with arm issues in 2009 and did not put up the same numbers afterwards as he progressed through the system. In four seasons with the Iowa Cubs, Jackson was 23-29 in 96 games, 61 starts, with a 5.27 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.
