Countdown to Opening Day in Pittsburgh: 11 Days

With the last off day on the Cactus League schedule in the rearview mirror, the Cubs get back to work today and begin the home stretch of Spring Training. After today’s split squad action, the Cubs have only nine practice games left. The Cubs play their final game in Arizona next Thursday at HoHoKam Park before flying to Houston for two against the Astros. Next Thursday is also the Cubs final home game at HoHoKam Park.

The Cubs play their fifth and final split squad games today. Dale Sveum’s team is 4-4 on split squad days this spring.

Half of the roster makes the two hour trip up I-10 to face the Dodgers in Tucson. The longtime National League foes play at Kino Sports Complex, home of the Tucson Padres, with proceeds of the game benefitting the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation, granddaughter of former Cubs’ GM Dallas Green. Starlin Castro, Anthony Rizzo and Darwin Barney are among the players on the travel roster to Tucson.

Len Kasper has a few days off. Mick Gillispie and Jody Davis will call the action from Tucson on

The Cubs will suit up for their second night game this spring. The Cubs were unable to complete their first game under the lights back on March 8 in Goodyear against the Reds. The game was called after an inning and a half due to the weather.

Tonight’s game can been seen on MLB.TV or on delay on the MLB Network. Pat Hughes and Keith Moreland will call the action on 720 WGN.

This afternoon all starts with Scott Feldman … and tonight all begins with Jeff Samardzija.

Spring Training Game Twenty-Eight: Cubs (ss) (12-14) vs. Dodgers (9-14)

While it is only Spring Training, Scott Feldman needs to put together a good outing this afternoon against the Dodgers. To put it simply, Feldman has not been good this spring. Throw the runs and hits allowed out, those happen in the Cactus League, but his difficulty with throwing strikes, keeping the ball down and inability to put hitters away this spring have been concerning.

The White Sox were the last team to take batting practice off Feldman. Feldman lived up in the zone, and the Sox feasted on Feldman last Friday at HoHoKam Park. Feldman was charged with seven runs on seven hits (one home run) with a hit batsman, two walks and two strikeouts.

Scott Feldman makes his fifth Cactus League start today after allowing 14 runs on 19 hits (two home runs) with five walks, two hit batsman and eight strikeouts over the first four outings (10 2/3 innings).

Today should be a good test for Scott Feldman as the Dodgers lineup is expected to include Matt Kemp, Andre Either and Yasiel Puig.

Stephen Fife has been solid this spring and makes his second start in the Cactus League this afternoon. Fife has allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in three previous Cactus League games (9 2/3 innings)

Spring Training Game Twenty-Nine: Cubs (ss) (12-14) vs. Mariners (17-7)

Jeff Samardzija is coming off his best outing of the spring. Samardzija found a rhythm early and pitched ahead in the count over a majority of his five shutout innings. Samardzija hit his spots and was so efficient that he had to finish his outing in the bullpen in order to reach his pitch count limit for the day. Samardzija surrendered just three hits, one for extra bases, walked one and struck out three, with six groundball outs.

Samardzija makes his fifth Cactus League start tonight … Samardzija also threw four innings in a minor league game. In four Cactus League starts, Samardzija has allowed six runs on 11 hits with six walks and eight strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.

Jon Garland has put together an excellent spring, and has pitched his way to being in the mix for a spot in the Mariners’ Opening Day rotation. Garland makes his fourth start tonight after allowing one run on five hits with four walks and a strikeout in his first three starts (six innings).

Erasmo Ramirez is also scheduled to throw for the Mariners.
