Spring Training Game Seven: Cubs (4-2) vs. Diamondbacks (3-3)

  • Game Time – 2:05pm CST
  • Coverage – TV: None – Radio:
  • Location – HoHoKam Park, Mesa

Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 4.50/1.50) vs. Trevor Cahill (0-0, -.–/-.–)

Spring Training games usually begin around March 1, but due to the World Baseball Classic, the Cubs will play their seventh spring game on the first day of March. The Cubs have one full month, and 32 games remaining on the exhibition schedule before Opening Day in Pittsburgh.

The Cubs square off against the Diamondbacks for the first time this spring today, and will face each other one more time this month, March 11, at Salt River Fields.

The Cubs play four games over the next three days. Dale Sveum’s team travels to Scottsdale to take on the Giants on Saturday then it’s the first of five split squad days on Sunday … half of the roster will travel to Tempe to take on the Angels while the other half will stay in Mesa to host the Brewers.

Len Kasper and Mick Gillispie will call the action once again on

This afternoon it all begins with Jeff Samardzija

Jeff Samardzija makes his second start of the spring today. Samardzija faced the Giants last Sunday in the home opener against the Giants and allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in two innings. Samardzija said afterwards he was not happy with his sider, which accounted for two of the three hits he allowed.

Starters usually increase their innings by one per start in the Cactus League, but with spring being extended by a week this year, the Cubs could wait until Samardzija’s next start before they let him go three frames.

Trevor Cahill makes his spring debut this afternoon. Cahill is coming off a solid first year with the Diamondbacks after being traded from the A’s last off-season. Cahill posted a 13-12 record in 32 starts with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP … and was 1-1 in two starts against the Cubs with a 3.14 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP.

Patrick Corbin is expected to piggyback Trevor Cahill this afternoon.

    Junior Lake is in centerfield

Since you went to spring training, and with all of your sources, how do you rate Lake’s chances of playing some time this year as a Major Leaguer for the Cubs and what position 3B or outfield?
What does he need to work on as a hitter? My guess is plate dislipine and of course more time at 3B, which should have been done the last year or so by the Cub’s Minor league staff.

      • Neil

From the way I understand it, the front office likes the versatility that Lake could provide. When I saw his workout at third with Sveum and Bell, he showed a lot of improvement in a short amount of time.

As for this season in the big leagues, maybe in September but as you know he has not played above Double-A and the front office seems committed to players getting at least 500 plate appearances in Triple-A. They’ve said there will be some exceptions, but Lake needs the time.

He has a lot of raw ability and just needs to work on consistency. As you pointed out, plate discipline and pitch recognition. Like many young hitters, he can hit a fastball very well, but the breaking balls …

Campana with a two-run double off Blake Parker after Rafael Dolis walked three straight.

    • DWalker

Campana the cub killer? A lot of walks by cubs pitchers again today it seems

      • Ray Ray

Haha! The way many on here were complaining about his lack of power you would think he couldn’t hit a double on a little league field. Good for Campana. I hope he does well.

    • paulcatanese

Sorry everyone, but Campana just made my day.
Although one hit does not make a season, I hope he continues to hit the long ball( probably carried maybe 200 feet).

      • Theboardrider

I hope the beat for him. He may end up a Cubs killer, but i don’t see him as an everyday player.

    • SomeGuy27

Campana also tripled. He’s gonna be Jeff Blauser in reverse.

      • paulcatanese

Campana could haunt the Cubs. As long as the Cubs win, I hope Campana keeps it up. Its too bad he couldnt do it here with the Cubs.
