Rusin and Bogusevic Among Fifth Round of Cubs Spring Roster Cuts

The Cubs announced the fifth round of spring roster cuts on Friday morning, and all but set the 25-man roster they will begin the season with on April 1 in Pittsburgh. Dave Sappelt has made the Opening Day roster and will begin the year as the Cubs’ fifth outfielder.

Chris Rusin was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, and will be used as a starter in the I-Cubs rotation.

The Cubs re-assigned several players that were non-roster invites to camp after signing minor league deals with the team over the off-season. Brian Bogusevic, Casey Coleman, Drew Carpenter, Jaye Chapman, Brad Nelson, Edwin Maysonet, Johermyn Chavez, Darnell McDonald, Blake Parker and Jensen Lewis were all re-assigned to minor league camp.

Alberto Gonzalez remains in camp as the Cubs’ search the waiver wire for another back-up infieder.

Many of the players cut on Friday will help compose the Iowa Cubs’ Opening Day roster.

With the latest round of roster cuts, the Cubs spring roster officially stands 35 with four players still in camp that will begin the year on the DL (Matt Garza, Scott Baker, Ian Stewart and Arodys Vizcaino). The Cubs have 31 healthy players left on the Spring Training roster.

The cuts the team made on Friday come at no real surprise. With a full 40-man roster and only a couple of options to create space, it was highly unlikely that many of these players would break camp with the team. Brian Bogusevic had the best camp of the players sent down on Friday, but he did not fit the Cubs need … a right-handed hitting outfielder that could play all three spots in the field.

Chris Rusin was arguably the biggest surprise of the spring, and he figures to be the first pitcher called up in the event of another injury to one of the starting five.

Hisanori Takahashi, Cory Wade, Rafael Dolis and Zach Putnam remain in the mix for the final spot in the bullpen. The Cubs announced Friday that Michael Bowden and Hector Rondon will break camp with the team.
