Cubs Option Rafael Dolis to Triple-A Iowa

The Cubs announced the sixth round of spring roster cuts on Sunday. As expected, the Cubs optioned RHP Rafael Dolis to Triple-A Iowa. Dolis was eligible for a fourth minor league option year because he has five or fewer professional seasons under his belt and the Cubs had already used three options on him.

The Cubs spring roster officially stands at 34 players. With Matt Garza, Ian Stewart, Scott Baker and Arodys Vizcaino beginning the season on the DL, the Cubs actually have 30 players remaining in camp with Brett Jackson and J.C. Boscan slated to be on the I-Cubs’ Opening Day roster.

With Rafael Dolis no longer in the mix for a spot on the Opening Day roster, three non-roster invitees remain in camp for the last spot in the Cubs’ bullpen … Hisanori Takahashi, Zach Putnam and Cory Wade. Takahashi is considered the favorite of the three.

With Scott Baker out until at least June, look for the Cubs to place Baker on the 60-day DL in order to create a spot on the 40-man roster for one of the relievers.

While it appears Arodys Vizcaino will also begin the year on the 60-day DL, Jason McLeod said on Sunday that Vizcaino is throwing off a mound. McLeod did not mention a timeframe on when Vizcaino will be pitching in games.

Dolis appears to be mimicking David Aardsma…taking ten years or so before figuring out how to be effective.
