Baez, Soler and Vitters Among Fourth Round of Cubs Spring Roster Cuts

The Cubs announced the fourth round of spring roster cuts on Sunday. The Cubs sent seven players to minor league camp, and reduced their spring roster to 46 players.

The Cubs optioned Jorge Soler to High-A Daytona, where he is expected to begin the season. Josh Vitters and Junior Lake were optioned to Triple-A Iowa while Christian Villanueva was optioned to Double-A Tennessee. All players on the 40-man roster must be optioned to the minors.

The Cubs also re-assigned Javier Baez, Barret Loux and Rafael Lopez to minor league camp. The roster move with Loux was announced last week.

According to multiple reports, Javier Baez will begin the season with the Daytona Cubs.

Javier Baez and Jorge Soler are expected to be in Monday’s starting lineup when the Cubs travel to Peoria to take on the Padres. After the game, both players will be sent down to minor league camp. As reported, just because players have been sent down to minor league camp, it does not mean those players will not participate in Cactus League games again this spring. Due to the loose nature of Spring Training, players can be assigned to a big league team’s roster for a day in order to field a team, especially on travel days.

Dale Sveum has said that the Cubs will start playing Spring Training games this week like regular season games. The regulars will play seven, eight, nine innings while the relievers will be used in roles the team projects them to start the season in. Pinch-hitters will be used and players will be asked to treat the games like they would regular season games.

With the latest round of roster cuts, the Cubs have 46 players remaining in camp.

I look forward to seekng what Baez does in Daytona. It should amount to batting practice for him.

Seeing him last year with Peoria in BP was pretty neat. Wasn’t the power show he showed in the last few days but that bat speed is legit and while still raw in the field he showed flashes. Hope he keeps it up in Daytona

With Trey McNutt being sent to AAA and being used in the bullpen, I imagine we’ll see him get some MLB service time this year if there are some more injuries on the pitching staff. I know he hasn’t gotten to pitch too much this spring, but are there any of you who have seen him play that can comment on how he’s looked out of the pen?
