From the Wire … Lendy Castillo Cleared Waivers, Outrighted to Triple-A Iowa

According to multiple reports, RHP Lendy Castillo cleared waivers as expected on Tuesday and was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa. Castillo was designated for assignment on January 26 to make room on the 40-man roster for Carlos Villanueva.

The Cubs selected Lendy Castillo in the Rule 5 Draft in December of 2011 and he struggled mightily at the Major League level last year. There were rumblings last year that the Cubs felt he could eventually end up as a starter. Castillo has good stuff, he simply needs time in the minors.

The Cubs assigned Castillo to Triple-A Iowa but Double-A Tennessee is the likely destination for him to start the season.

The Cubs still have a roster spot to clear before announcing the signing of Scott Hairston.

They’re reporting that Ryan Braun’s name is listed in the records of the lab that A-Rod “allegedly” was being supplied PED’s from. The guy got off on a technicality last year, and the damage was already done, since all he needed to do after being caught was to maintain whatever level of workout he achieved with the PED’s he took. I’m hoping they catch him this time.

    Caribbean World Series Update

Puerto Rico kept their hopes alive in the tournament by defeating Venezuela 4-1. The Creoles’ catcher Ramon Castro was 2-3 with a double and a solo home run. Recent Cubs’ signee Yeiper Castillo took the loss for the Navegantes.

Lendy passes through waivers…..ends the year it took to turn him from short term rule v asset to long term minor league arm….add him to the inventory list of potential arms for the future. Low risk, low cost opportunity to add a young arm completed. Time will tell if he ever makes it back to the majors, but as with all moves it isn’t just about this move it is about the cumulative collection of moves to try and keep improving the 25 man roster every year.
