From the Wire … Lendy Castillo Cleared Waivers, Outrighted to Triple-A Iowa

According to multiple reports, RHP Lendy Castillo cleared waivers as expected on Tuesday and was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa. Castillo was designated for assignment on January 26 to make room on the 40-man roster for Carlos Villanueva.

The Cubs selected Lendy Castillo in the Rule 5 Draft in December of 2011 and he struggled mightily at the Major League level last year. There were rumblings last year that the Cubs felt he could eventually end up as a starter. Castillo has good stuff, he simply needs time in the minors.

The Cubs assigned Castillo to Triple-A Iowa but Double-A Tennessee is the likely destination for him to start the season.

The Cubs still have a roster spot to clear before announcing the signing of Scott Hairston.
