According to multiple reports, the Cubs signed utilityman Brent Lillibridge and outfielder Darnell McDonald to minor league contracts that include non-roster invitations to big league camp.
Counting Lillibridge and McDonald, the Cubs have signed 16 players to minor league contracts this off-season that will be in big league camp on non-roster invites this spring.
Brent Lillibridge had a rough 2012 season after a decent year with the White Sox in 2011. Lillibridge was dealt to the Red Sox, along with Zach Stewart, in the Kevin Youkilis deal then DFA’d by Boston. Lillibridge finished the year with the Indians and managed just a .195/.250/.274/.524 line with six doubles and three home runs in 102 games with the White Sox, Red Sox and Indians. Lillibridge hit .258/.340/.505/.845 with five doubles and 13 home runs in 97 games for the southside in 2011.
The 29-year old right-handed hitting utilityman will compete for a job on the Cubs’ bench this spring.
Darnell McDonald played in 42 games for the Red Sox and Yankees last season and the 34-year old outfielder managed only a .205/.297/.352/.649 line with seven doubles and two home runs. McDonald signed a free-agent contract with the Red Sox in 2009.
The Cubs also announced the signing of Dayan Diaz. The soon-to-be 24-year old right hander (February 10, 1989) has pitched in 91 games over six seasons in the Astros’ system with only 10 starts. The 5-foot-10, 156-pound right-hander owns a 15-12 record with a 2.13 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.
The Cubs have invited 16 players to big league camp that signed minor league contracts this winter. The full list of non-roster invitees will announced later this month.
