Chris Rusin (0-1, 1.80/0.60) vs. Edwin Jackson (8-9, 3.53/1.16)

Updated 5:09pm CDTCubs Recalled Chris Rusin, Rafael Dolis, Anthony Recker and Jaye Chapman from Double-A Tennessee

Weather permitting … The Cubs enter play tonight winless in September (0-3) and will try to get back in the win column behind rookie southpaw Chris Rusin. Rusin is taking Brooks Raley’s spot in the rotation and will be officially recalled from Double-A Tennessee prior to tonight’s game. Rusin tossed three scoreless innings Friday night for the Smokies to stay on schedule for tonight’s start.

The Cubs are expected to add catcher Anthony Recker to the active roster prior to tonight’s game. Recker was acquired from the Oakland A’s for Blake Lalli on August 27. Recker played in three games for the Iowa Cubs (.286/.444/.429, 2-for-7 with a double and two walks) before finishing his minor league season with the Tennessee Smokies. Recker hit his first homer since being acquired by the Cubs on Monday afternoon.

In other newsDave Sappelt became the 49th different player used by the Cubs this season when he pinch-hit for James Russell in the seventh inning of Sunday’s game. The Cubs are two short of the franchise record for the most players used in a single-season. The Cubs used 51 different players during the 2000 season.

Darwin Barney ran his errorless games streak to 119 on Monday. Barney enters play tonight four games short of the Cubs record for consecutive games by a second baseman without an error held by Ryne Sandberg (123).

Tonight all starts with Chris Rusin

Chris Rusin is making his second big league start tonight. Rusin had a good spring with the Major League club and posted an 8-9 record in 25 starts with the Iowa Cubs. Rusin gave up 146 hits with 94 strikeouts and 53 walks in 140 1/3 innings (4.55 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP). Rusin appeared very calm and showed very good mound presence in his first Major League start. Rusin held the high-powered Brewers offense to one run on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings.

Tonight will be Chris Rusin’s first appearance against the Nationals and no one on the Nats’ roster has faced Rusin in a big league game.

Edwin Jackson has put together another solid season and is coming off a dominating performance against his former team. Jackson shut down the Cardinals for eight innings his last time out. Jackson allowed one unearned run on four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Jackson appears to be getting hot just at the right time for the Nationals.

Edwin Jackson is 4-5 in 11 starts at Nationals Park this season with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP and is 2-3 in his last six starts with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP … since the break, 3-5 in nine starts with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.

Edwin Jackson has owned the Cubs of late. For his career, Jackson is 2-3 in seven starts against the Cubs with a 5.23 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP … but last year Jackson was 2-1 in four starts against the Cubs in a White Sox and Cardinals uniform with a 3.33 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.

Cubs Career Numbers against Edwin Jackson

  • David DeJesus – 4-for-14 with two doubles and a walk
  • Bryan LaHair – 0-for-7
