Travis Wood (4-10, 4.76/1.26) vs. Yovani Gallardo (13-8, 3.62/1.28)

Update 4:06pm CDTCubs DFA’d LHP Alex HinshawActivated RHP Blake Parker from 60-Day DL

How will the Cubs respond to Monday’s embarrassing loss to the Brewers? The Cubs had numerous chances to score runs but could not buy a hit with runners in scoring position. Not only have the Cubs lost six straight to the Brewers but Milwaukee’s pitching has had the Cubs’ number. Over the last four games against the Brewers, the Cubs have struck out 52 times … and it could continue tonight with Yovani Gallardo on the mound.

In other newsDarwin Barney has not been charged with an error at second base in 112 straight games and he could tie David Eckstein’s N.L. single season record for consecutive errorless games at second base tonight. Eckstein went 113 straight games without an error for the Padres in 2010. Ryne Sandberg owns the Cubs all-time mark for consecutive errorless games at second base … 123 games from June 21, 1989 through May 17, 1990.

Bruce Miles provided an update on Albert Almora. Almora recently twisted his ankle when he hit a bag awkwardly. Almora was scheduled to see a doctor in Boise on Monday and the Cubs are expected to know more at that time. Jason McLeod said Almora was doing better Sunday and the Cubs are hoping he can return to the field soon.

Bruce Miles also spoke with Jason McLeod about Juan Carlos Paniagua. McLeod told Miles that they will work him into a starting role to build innings and experience. The Cubs feel it is too early to determine what role he could settle into to … either a starter or a reliever.

Tonight it all starts with Travis Wood

Travis Wood is coming off a good outing against the Brewers … unfortunately Yovani Gallardo was on the hill and outpitched Wood. Wood held the Brewers to three runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts over seven innings. Wood allowed two of the three runs in the first inning and the Cubs’ offense could not mount a comeback … and Wood lost to Milwaukee for the first time in his career.

Other than the clunker against the Reds two starts ago Wood has pitched rather well this month. After posting a 2-3 record in five starts in July with a 7.36 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP, Wood is 0-4 in his last five starts with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

Travis Wood needs to show improvement at Wrigley over the last month of the season. Wood is 2-4 in nine starts with a 5.17 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.

Travis Wood will make his second start of the season tonight against the Brewers. For his career, Wood is 3-1 in six games, five starts, with a 3.31 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.

Brewers Career Numbers against Travis Wood

  • Norichika Aoki – 1-for-3 with a double
  • Ryan Braun – 5-for-14 with three doubles and a home run
  • Yovani Gallardo – 0-for-2
  • Carlos Gomez – 1-for-9 with a home run and a walk
  • Corey Hart – 3-for-9 with two doubles
  • Jonathan Lucroy – 1-for-8
  • Martin Maldonado – 0-for-4
  • Aramis Ramirez – 3-for-12 with a double
  • Cody Ransom – 1-for-5
  • Rickie Weeks – 1-for-14 with a home run

Yovani Gallardo is coming off a dominate start against the Cubs. Gallardo surrendered just four hits, two of them left the park (David DeJesus and Bryan LaHair) and struck out nine Cubs with only two walks in seven innings. The Cubs made Gallardo work but they could not square much up against him.

Gallardo has completed at least seven innings in each of his last five starts … and has posted a win in each of those outings. Gallardo is 4-0 in his last four starts with a 2.20 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP … since the break, 6-2 in eight starts with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.

Yovani Gallardo has struggled a little on the road this season and is just 5-5 in 11 starts with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.

Tonight will be Gallardo’s fourth and final start of the season against the Cubs. Gallardo is 2-1 in the first three with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP … for his career, Gallardo owns a 6-2 mark against the Cubs in 13 games with a 3.10 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. At Wrigley, 2-1 in six starts with a 3.62 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.

Cubs Career Numbers against Yovani Gallardo

  • Darwin Barney – 2-for-17 with a walk
  • Starlin Castro – 10-for-25 with three doubles and two walks
  • Steve Clevenger – 0-for-5 with a walk
  • David DeJesus – 3-for-8 with two doubles, a home run and three walks
  • Brett Jackson – 0-for-3
  • Bryan LaHair – 4-for-8 with two home runs and a walk
  • Anthony Rizzo – 1-for-3
  • Alfonso Soriano – 4-for-23 with a double and a home run
  • Luis Valbuena – 1-for-6 with a double
  • Travis Wood – 0-for-2

Chicago Cubs DVD Giveaway
A&E Networks Home Entertainment/MLB Productions have released a new DVD Box set of four of the greatest games in Chicago Cubs history. The DVDs are chock full of historic moments, players and milestones in the club’s history.

The DVD set includes: The Sandberg Game, Kerry Wood’s 20 Strikeout Game, the 2008 NL Central Division clinching game against the Cardinals and a game between the Cubs and Phillies from July 12, 1969.

A&E Networks contacted the CCO and asked for us to let our readers know this new DVD set is available on and set aside five copies for us to give to our readers.

Beginning August 27 and running through August 31, the CCO will conduct a daily contest and the winner will receive a copy of the DVD set from A&E.

Here is how the contest works.

There will be only (1) winner per day. All entries must be posted in the comment section with a time stamp prior to first pitch. All entries made after first pitch (7:05pm CDT or 1:20pm CDT) will NOT be valid. If any rules are not followed then those entries will NOT be valid. Winners will NOT be eligible for the remainder of the contest. All entries must include answers for all questions and failure to do so will make that entry invalid. Only (1) entry per day, per person, per IP address.

There will be a daily question based on the day’s starting pitcher followed by (5) tie breaking questions. The person with the correct answer for the first question will be that day’s winner. The tie breaking procedure will follow the order in which the questions are asked, not based on the amount of correct answers. All answers must be exact, close is not good. If more than one entry has all (6) questions answered correctly, the winner will be determined by the first correct answers given.

The winner will be posted in the comment section of that day’s game preview. The winner will have to email the CCO with a correct mailing address. A&E Networks will send out the DVD set to winners within the continental US only.

Contest Two – August 28, 2012

Jordan Bernfield delivers again via twitter … quotes from
    Castro’s press conference

Jed: “Starlin is a big part of our future…and we’re
really excited about it. It’s a really good day for the Cubs”

Jed: “Shortstop is a really hard position to fill in
today’s game, especially one with offense.”

Jed said it can be hard to do an extension in season because
it can be a distraction. Starlin says it was, a little bit.

Starlin says Soriano has been most important person on the
team for him, because he took him in as a young player, showed him the ropes

Jed says hardest to find top of the rotation starting
pitchers and short stops. They’ve got their SS.

Neil: How much do you think Hendry would have given Castro? I’m guessing 75 million plus a no trade clause

      • Neil

I’m right there with you … six and 80 with a full no trade and a player opt out after his arb years would have ended.

  • Neil

Solid play for Castro to start the night

  • Neil

    Speechless …

    • Neil

Another excellent play by Valbuena at third

  • Neil

That was a good at bat for Jackson … 0-2 to a walk

    • Zonk

Looks like we’re going to lose, but a good outing by Wood. At this point, he should be considered a lock for the 2013 starting rotation. I would consider him a decent #4; we’ll see if that’s where he actually is. He’s inconsistent, but gives you enough good outings to keep you in alot of games, and that’s a #4s job.

Wood can also hit a bit; he’s our best hitting pitcher.

    • Neil

Cubs lost 4-1 to Brewers Tuesday night – Travis Wood: 3R,5H
      (HR),0BB,4K,7IP, 1-for-2,HR; Cubs: 3 hits, 3 walks, 11 strikeouts

      • Neil

Darwin Barney tied NL single-season record for
consecutive errorless games at second base Tuesday night … 113 straight without
        an error.

        • Zonk

He should win the Gold Glove, IMO. It might be close, as Brandon Phillips is the incumbent, and he’s had a good year. Plus he’s a better hitter, on a better team.

Barney should be the winner. I think he needs to break Ryno’s record to get it though, or finish the year without another error.

  • Neil

Wood with a big fly … first as a Cub, third of career.

  • Neil

    Another excellent play by Castro

  • Neil

Three entries correctly predicted four strikeouts for Travis Wood. Each of the three entries did not guess any of the tie breakers correct. Mr Cub 1958 is Tuesday night’s winner because he placed his entry before the other two correct answers (time stamp).

Thank you to all that participated tonight.
