Justin Germano (2-3, 5.40/1.26) vs. Marco Estrada (1-5, 4.23/1.18)

The Cubs begin their final series of the season with the Brewers tonight with the first of four versus their division rivals. Dale Sveum’s team has played some of their worst ball of the year against the Brewers. The Cubs have beaten the Brewers only three times this season (3-10) and gave three games to the Brewers last week at Miller Park. Sveum’s offense struck out 37 times in the three-game series and will face two of the three starters that they allowed to dominate them a week ago.

Following tonight’s matchup for Justin Germano and Marco Estrada, Travis Wood will take on Yovani Gallardo on Tuesday night. Jeff Samardzija and Mike Fiers are scheduled to square off on Wednesday night with Brooks Raley and Shaun Marcum slated for Thursday’s finale.

The Cubs are 7-2 in their last nine series at Wrigley and winning this series would be a good way to finish a rough season against the Brewers.

In other newsDarwin Barney has not been charged with an error at second base in 111 straight games and he is two games short of tying the N.L. single season record for consecutive errorless games at second base (David Eckstein, 113 in 2010). Ryne Sandberg owns the Cubs all-time mark for consecutive errorless games at second base … 123 games from June 21, 1989 through May 17, 1990.

Tonight all starts with Justin Germano

Justin Germano is coming off by far his worst outing as a Cub … unfortunately it came against the Brewers. The Cubs defense did not help as Milwaukee scored seven runs on eight hits off Germano in 4 2/3 innings. Germano walked one and struck out three but struggled with his command in what ended up being his shortest outing of the season.

Justin Germano has done a good job since being acquired by the Cubs. Germano has given the pitching-starved organization innings. In his last four starts, Germano is 1-2 with a 6.14 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Germano will make his fourth start at Wrigley tonight. Germano is 2-1 in four games, three starts, at Wrigley this season with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.

Justin Germano is 1-2 in four career appearances, three starts, against the Brewers with a 6.87 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.

Marco Estrada is coming off his first win of the season, a six-inning shutout performance over the Cubs. Estrada has struggled against just about every other team in baseball outside of the Cubs this year. Estrada allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out nine in clearly his best start of the season.

In his last four starts, Estrada is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

Marco Estrada has struggled on the road this season and is 0-3 in 10 games, six starts, with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.

Tonight will be Estrada’s fourth games, third start, against the Cubs this season. Estrada is 1-0 in the first three with a 1.38 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP. For his career, Estrada is 1-0 in seven games, two starts, against the Cubs with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP … at Wrigley Field, no record in four relief appearances with a 13.50 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP.

Chicago Cubs DVD Giveaway
A&E Networks Home Entertainment/MLB Productions have released a new DVD Box set of four of the greatest games in Chicago Cubs history. The DVDs are chock full of historic moments, players and milestones in the club’s history.

The DVD set includes: The Sandberg Game, Kerry Wood’s 20 Strikeout Game, the 2008 NL Central Division clinching game against the Cardinals and a game between the Cubs and Phillies from July 12, 1969.

A&E Networks contacted the CCO and asked for us to let our readers know this new DVD set is available on and set aside five copies for us to give to our readers.

Beginning today (August 27 – August 31), the CCO will run a daily contest and the winner will receive a copy of the DVD set from A&E.

Here is how the contest works.

There will be only (1) winner per day. All entries must be posted in the comment section with a time stamp prior to first pitch. All entries made after first pitch (7:05pm CDT or 1:20pm CDT) will NOT be valid. If any rules are not followed then those entries will NOT be valid. Winners will NOT be eligible for the remainder of the contest. All entries must include answers for all questions and failure to do so will make that entry invalid. Only (1) entry per day, per person, per IP address.

There will be a daily question based on the day’s starting pitcher followed by (5) tie breaking questions. The person with the correct answer for the first question will be that day’s winner. The tie breaking procedure will follow the order in which the questions are asked, not based on the amount of correct answers. All answers must be exact, close is not good. If more than one entry has all (6) questions answered correctly, the winner will be determined by the first correct answers given.

The winner will be posted in the comment section of that day’s game preview. The winner will have to email the CCO with a correct mailing address. A&E Networks will send out the DVD set to winners within the continental US only.
