From the Wire … Cubs and Braves Agree in Principal on a Deal for Ryan Dempster

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have traded Ryan Dempster to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves and Nationals were considered the front runners for Dempster after the Dodgers appeared to back out of the running prior to his start on Friday night in St. Louis. This is not confirmed, but initial reports are that Randall
    Delgado is in the deal.

    • Zonk

Keith Law confirmed just now that Delgado is part of the package, and he is very reliable source for stuff like that.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Yes, very. He is one of the online sources I trust.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

From Kaplan: Ryan Dempster traded to Atlanta. Sources tell me Cubs made great deal
to land young pitching. I am working on names. Back at u all shortly.

  • daverj

I’ve watched Delgado pitch a handful of times last year and this season. He’s improved over the past year. Good stuff, but inconsistent right now. I think he develops into a very good #3 starter or low end #2 over the next couple years. I like Delgado and Shark as our #3 and #4 starters for the next few years.

Of course, we still need to find 2 aces for #1 and #2!

  • cubtex

Randall Delgado for Dempster. I like it! 22 year old with hit and miss stuff. Great K numbers in minors. Don’t look too much into his numbers this year. He is only 22 and just getting his feet wet. He has upside and is a great young arm to add.

    • triple

POSITIVITY!!!!! So I guess we find out soon. Is it no surprise that Demp goes to a team that very little have discussed here? I don’t know much about other team’s farm systems, but I know the Braves always are capable of building from within their own system so I think that is a plus.

      • Zonk

The Braves farm system is loaded. That’s why they always win. They could make 3 major trades, and still have more talent than us…sadly.
Hopefully we can close that gap

      • cubtex

What are you talking about? Can you just disect each move and look at how it benefits the team? The Braves have been mentioned over the last week and this deal was done due to Jair Jurggens bad start last night.

      • paulcatanese

The Braves have always improved the pitchers they recieved from the Cubs, and looor Dempster to get them very close to post season..

  • Rational Logic

RT @Kevin_Goldstein Ok, Delgado is in the trade. You should be thrilled Cubs fan. Just thrilled.

    Great news.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Reports are confirming that RHP Randall Delgado
is part of the Cubs’ return for Ryan Dempster.

  • BosephHeyden

Not too shabby a deal at all: you get a good young arm, and better yet, it’s a good young STARTING arm. The move definitely helps the Braves because their defense is good enough it can play to Dempster, and it doesn’t hurt that this betters the chances of Chipper going out in October rather than September. Win-win for both teams.

  • triple

And Dempster should be willing to waive his no-trade clause for the Braves. Hopefully. Besides, he should just leave his family in Chitown for the meantime and then resign with the Cubs next year. Said ‘in jest’ of course. ;)

    • paulcatanese

Not really, as I recall Dempster had sold his house about a month ago, did he forsee a trade?

  • John_CC

    Sounds like a good move.

At this point, I just mostly wish Ryan Dempster good luck. The man has been a Cub for a long time, and nothing but a class act, 1-A competitor, teammate and leader.

My intense dislike for the Braves has waned over the years, and now I think I will just have pull for them to win the NL.

    • triple

I believe this should really raise the value of Garza up to what Theo likely wants to get for him too. That might be the best part of all of this! Would the Nat’s potentially get involved in a deal for Garza?

      • cubtex

Really good return for Dempster. He is at least someone who has upside more than a #5. Kevin Goldstein says he can be a #3. Doesn’t have as much upside as Zach Lee…….but safer!

      • John_CC

Granted he pitches in 4 days.

        • triple

Yes true. I believe he will… fingers crossed.

          • daverj

Not sure I like these Garza to the Dodgers rumors. I’m not a big Zach Lee fan and he’s the best the Dodgers have in the minors. I’d rather hang to Garza for now …

          • cubtex

Agreed. They don’t need to trade him this year. If they don’t get blown away with an offer….keep him.

        • paulcatanese

Thats a must if he is to be traded.

  • Rational Logic

Looks like Cubs are moving forward with discussions about Garza to the Dodgers for Lee. Could be a great, great day or two here!

    • Aaron

What?!? Do you know how bad Lee really is? ….just got hammered by our very own AA team. All hype and no results. You honestly think that’s a good thing

      • Rational Logic

Do YOU really know how bad Lee is? Look at the trade itself – going for upside. He is very young and talented, the trade makes sense.

You ever think that maybe that’s the best trade available? I would love to get a look into your crystal ball since you seem to know everything. I’m sure Randall Delgado is a sure thing, I suppose? Just like there’s no chance Matt Garza could be horrible/injured the rest of his time in Chicago? I mean, there’s no way those are possible…the trade makes sense. Don’t judge a trade before it’s even completed. Just short sighted and you have nothing to back it up other than his historical minor league stats – I’m sure you of all people, since you know everything, could tell me some stars that took time to put it all together – I think he’s no more than 21 years old. We’re not winning anything in the next 2,3 or probably 5 years so why not make this trade?

        • Aaron

I can tell you what my “crystal ball” is….it’s called research and stats don’t lie…he’s overhyped….if you’re going to make statements like you just did then you better prepare to back it up. If you hold the same logic then shouldn’t Weathers be an All-Star reliever by now? After all, he was a former top pick of the Rockies and hyped pitcher who never had the stats to back it up and Lee is the same

          • daverj

Aaron – I don’t like Lee either, but I got to call you out on the Weathers comparison. Lee has time to turn things around before a comparison to Weathers is fair.

          • Aaron

I’ll give you that it was exaggeration but still a valid comparison in terms of the hype vs actual production

          • http://twitter.com/SirGladiator Frankie Newton

Aaron is exactly right about Lee, his ERA is over 9 and his WHIP is over 2, and thats in DOUBLE A, not even Triple A. There is no reason that I can see to even trade Barney for him, much less Garza. Near as I can tell, he’s simply been mis-scouted, plain and simple. Garza can go to Detroit or Toronto or wherever they actually have talent to send in return. Heck, maybe he can go to Atlanta with Demp, the Braves have enough farm talent to easily give us good value for both guys, and enough terrible major league pitchers to need both guys. Let’s just stay away from the Dodgers and their sad farm system. Far, far away. I like the Dodgers, and I want them to get better, but not at our expense.

  • Aaron

Can’t complain…thought he might be worth slightly more but Delgado has been good in the minors and even MLB…can’t do a whole lot better with a true rental and the new CBA. I just hope he gets a ring and Chipper too in his last year then comes back for two yrs this offseason

  • Zonk

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com is reporting that the Cubs and Dodgers are discussing a Matt Garza for Zach Lee swap…..

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

From Kaplan: Just spoke with great source. No deal has been agreed upon. Talks ongoing. Nothing done yet.

    • Rational Logic

Is that for Demp or Garza?

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

        Dempster

      • Aaron

If Garza is dealt to the Dodgers i sure as hell hope that means teams like the Jays with stronger systems either backed out or weren’t interested. The Dodgers system right now is almost unanimously ranked at the bottom…it’d be a travesty if they got him

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Updated 2:14pm CDT – According to reports from the Sun-Times
and David Kaplan, the deal between the Cubs and Braves for Ryan Dempster is not
done. The two sides are continuing to talk but nothing is done or imminent.

    • Zonk

Wow, that would be alot of reporters jumping the gun if it turns out not to be a done deal……esp. John Heyman

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Dempster just announced on twitter that there is no trade.

      • MikeT_2008

Yeah I would be stunned if it fell through, 1-2 reporters whiffing on it but a good half dozen of them missing, I find that unlikely, where’s this much smoke there has to be fire

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

From Kevin Goldstein: Source indicates the Dempster to ATL
deal is NOT done. Don’t know if that’s a real hold up, or just waiting
for MLB to sign off on the $$$.

  • paulcatanese

Even though it looks like the Braves, Dempster still has to sign
    off on it.
And even though the Braves offer a better package than the
Dodgers, the Dodgers is where Dempster wants to go.
IMO if Dempster goes to Atlanta, its somehow going to cost the
Cubs more to get it done.
And Neil, great job with the updates.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    From Ryan Dempster: @RyanDempsterFDN

THERE IS NO TRADE dont know where this info came from!

    • BosephHeyden

And just like most things with the Cubs: if sounds too good to be true, it is.

      • Aaron

Ha ha….you beat me to the punch….was going to post the exact same thing

  • gary3411

This is some booty. Aaron Sorkin and the Newsroom on HBO should do a “The Dempster Trade” episode now. Good show btw.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Updated 2:55pm CDT – Ryan Dempster is in the Cubs’ clubhouse
in Pittsburgh. Dempster told the media he would not discuss the reports/rumor
that he has been traded to the Braves. Dempster responded with, “ If it’s on
the internet it must be true.” David Kaplan spoke with Randall Delgado’s agent.
Kaplan was told, “We haven’t heard a thing about him being traded.”

    • paulcatanese

What did I say earlier? It’s not done yet, as I mentioned, it’s going to cost the Cubs with an incentive get the deal done, or he may simply decline if it’s not the Dodgers. (Dempster)

      • paulcatanese

One thing, the Cubs have recieved more press on MLB than
anytime since the program has started.

      • Tony_Hall

It’s not done because Dempster hasn’t said yes. He obviously knew about it when he sent out his tweet and is enjoying being the center of attention by his comments to the press on the way in to the clubhouse.

        It will get done.

  • gary3411

Nightengale saying teams are simply waiting Dempsters approval.

  • Agustin rexach

The man transformed from Dumpster to a true great Cub right before our eyes. A gentlemen indeed, it was a pleasure.

  • Aaron

Apparently there still is a deal but needs Dempster’s approval

    • John_CC

I can’t believe he would hang this up. Certainly Demp, Epstein and Hoyer had the conversation long ago on who he be willing to go to. It’s not like this is a big surprise.

He probably wants to say his goodbyes in the clubhouse before tonight’s game.

      • Tony_Hall

I think you are 100% correct!

  • http://www.facebook.com/mike.simala Mike Simala

So are there any other players coming our way as well? Could Bethancourt be in this deal also? Or does it appear its just for Delgado? If it ever becomes official.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Rumors suggest one more player coming to the Cubs along with Delgado. Have not heard/read any names.

      • matthew8510

i thought wed get atleast 2 top 5 prospects for demp

        • Tony_Hall

Would you give up 2 Top 5 prospects to rent a 35 year old SP, having a good year?

          • matthew8510

if i can sign him beyond this year i would

          • Tony_Hall

There are no guarantees of that.

So Rizzo and Baez for 1-3 years of Dempster.

Soler and Almora for 1-3 years of Dempster.

No way would I do that.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mike.simala Mike Simala

        Thank you sir.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mike.simala Mike Simala

So Marlins get Turner and more for Anibal and Infante, interesting to see what else is included and if that may have been on the table for Demp and Barney

    • http://www.facebook.com/mike.simala Mike Simala

Turner Brantly and LHP Brian Flynn is the initial word. Damn would have liked to get Turner and Brantly, I wonder if this is Detroit reacting, maybe overly so, to Dempster being, maybe, off the market now.
