Talkin’ All-Stars Live – NL vs. AL – 07/10/12

83rd MLB All-Star – National League vs. American League
Game Time – 7:00pm CDT
Coverage – TV: FOX – Radio: ESPN Radio, XM Radio Channel 89
Location – Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City

Matt Cain (9-3, 2.62/0.96) vs. Justin Verlander (9-5, 2.58/0.95)

The first pitch of the 83rd Mid-Summer Classic is scheduled to take place around 7:25pm CDT as the Senior Circuit attempts to beat the Junior Circuit for the third straight year. Tony LaRussa is calling the shots for the National League team in what is expected to be his final game as a big league manager. For the third straight year, Ron Washington is the manager of the American League squad.

The Cubs will have more than one player representative for the first time since 2008. Starlin Castro will participate in his second straight All-Star game while Bryan LaHair is making his first trip. Dave McKay will also represent the Chicago Cubs tonight. At the request of Tony LaRussa, McKay will be part of LaRussa’s coaching staff for one last time.

With Matt Cain and Justin Verlander starting the game, the first two innings should be filled with a lot of swings and misses …

Only one player is a carryover from the National League starting lineup from a year ago, Carlos Beltran, and Prince Fielder switched from one league to the other. The American League squad has six players returning from last year’s starting nine.

    Nice start for the NL!

    • John_CC

I really do enjoy when the NL beats on the junior circuit. I just wish that MLB.com would let me watch the damn game! I just don’t get the blackout against paying Gameday subscribers. It makes no sense.

      • Tony_Hall

You can’t watch it on FOX?

        • John_CC

          I don’t own a television.

          Yep.

          • John_CC

And thanks for the doing the Talkin’ Live tonight Neil. I really appreciate it, having to just listen tonight.

          • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

You’re welcome … gotta love FOX.

The NL is just hitting, hitting and hitting.

          • John_CC

Wow! This is a beating! I liked the NL pitching staff a lot more to start, but I thought this could be 4-3 game.

          • Tony_Hall

Yes it is…I hope they keep piling on.

          • paulcatanese

Got to throw this in. Looks like the NL players are wearing flourescent suede shoes. Castro with powder blue, Giant players with bright orange shoes and Votto with Grey suede.
            NL sure kickeing butt–so far.

          • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

So Paul, are you saying Spike Lee was right all those years ago?

          • paulcatanese

I guess so, also the Gold ones and White shoes on a Yankee, never thought I would livto see the day.

          • Dorasaga

Steinbrenner passed away too early. He wouldn’t have allowed these showy fashion. King George must be in Heaven right now, for he brought joy to New York.

          • Tony_Hall

So all “TV” you watch is on the computer? I know that is coming, but hard to imagine.

You are going to make me think about that every time I pay my cable bill…

          • John_CC

Yeah, my wife and I aren’t big TV watchers. $100 a year gets every baseball game of the season ($8/mo), $10/mo for Netflix let’s us stream any TV series I could want, granted a little later, but I don’t care. The there is Hulu and others that I don’t even bother with.

What’s a cable bill with MLB TV, $100/mo?

          • Denver Mike

I’ve been doing the same thing as John with the MLB package and Netflix for about 2 years. On top of that I have found a few sites to stream NFL, NHL, and NBA for free as well so I figure I have traded my $150 cable/internet bill for a $65 worth of internet and packages. After living with cable for over 30 years I didn’t think I could live without it, but now I don’t think I could justify paying for it again….crazy!

          • John_CC

Yep, I can’t imagine paying 100 bucks a month for TV.

          • Tony_Hall

You guys are going to make me look into this…my first thought was football season, but sounds like there are ways for that as well.

I have often wondered why a network (pick any, but let’s use FOX) would care if you are watching their show over the internet or the TV. Just show the commercials you would have seen on TV, on the internet. Advertising is the same.

          • John_CC

I know, no sense at all. Now I’m not watching anything, I COULD be watching the FOX broadcast online. Silly. I think it might have to do with the MLB’s contract and Selig’s stoopid blackout restrictions.

TBS used to set up a very nice stream to watch the AS Game when they had it, multiple camera angles to choose from, it was really cool. I hate FOX.

          • Ripsnorter1

I haven’t had a TV for over 25 years. I go over to my mother’s (she lives about 260 miles away) and she watches commercials whenever she watches a show. Think of that! Commercials! HAhahahahahahahahahahaaha!

I don’t know how she can stand it. There are so many of them.

In any case, think about it, Tony. Salvo mucho dinero.

          • paulcatanese

John, Dish runs $94.00 a month and no movie channels.
Because of mountains and band width I cannot get MLB.Com for the Comcast games
That ran $124.00 for the year and had that too. Had to cancel that, no reception.
Get Fox on and off basis.
I only get the WGN games.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jim.canavan.14 Jim Canavan
          • paulcatanese

            Thanks, I will try that.

          • Dorasaga

The problem with “free internet channels” like Atd. is that it’s actually considered illegal. Atd., though seems to be based in Europe, was shut down two years ago, while I used it to watch tennis.

You never know when they’ll go away (right on the day you want to watch a big game). The stream quality can go bad due to uploader (streamer) having technical difficulties. Best to pay for official subscriptions.

        • http://www.facebook.com/scott.mcmeekan Scott McMeekan

Wow, you guys make me feel like crap. Try $275/mo. DirecTV with all the options, plus rentals.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

A lot of hard hit balls in the first, Hamilton just missed one …

  • John_CC

And then Strasburg comes in. Man this is one of the best All Star staffs in a long time. LaRussa better get Dickey in there, he should have been the starter.

    • Tony_Hall

Just a little different from what we get to watch everyday…

      • John_CC

        yeah a little

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

David Freese is at first base … with LaHair’s glove.

    • MikeT_2008

Neil would you expect to see Freese move over to 3rd in an inning or so and then see Lahair get time at 1st? McKay has gotta be campaigning for him in the dugout

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

I would think so. Furcal is still out there too.

        • MikeT_2008

I care about Castro too but he will have many more of these games, this may be Lahair’s only chance and with his story I really hope he gets in the game somehow.

    • John_CC

I think he’ll move to 3B when LaHair comes in. LaRussa is managing the crap out of this last game! Chipper is the only 3B left on the bench, he can’t get in yet…to fragile.

      • MikeT_2008

Or I guess he could always put Lahair at DH and put Chipper at 3rd

  • MikeT_2008

Tony had better put Lahair in somewhere at some point, I was stunned to see Freese at first to start the inning

    • John_CC

Well Chipper in and got his AS hit. Is he at DH or 3b? Now he can still move Freese over to get LaHair in. Castro should getting in too. Come on Tony. He can’t let his old grudges rule this game.

      • MikeT_2008

Oh I put nothing past Tony, Castro will be here again, but if Lahair doesn’t get in after all his years in the minors, well it would just be sad

      • BosephHeyden

Does he actually have a grudge against the Cubs? I know they were his rivals for a while, but there’s a big difference between a lot of games against a specific team and the actual grudge Tony LaRussa has against Dusty Baker and his Reds….you know, where a member of Dusty’s team kicked one of his players in the head and effectively ended his career, yet Dusty still had the nerve to say he felt he was snubbed by LaRussa for the game this year?

  • MikeT_2008

Honestly I usually like the Fox broadcasts (know I’m in the minority) but they need to stop making this game sound like a World Series Game 7

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

LaHair is out there to start the bottom of the seventh

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Here comes Castro …

  • RMercer69

    Furcal 7 innings…Castro 2 innings???

    • John_CC

That’s LaRussa doing his “old school” managing.

  • RMercer69

Like Joe Maddon, but allowing F Rodney to wear his hat like that is ridiculous.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

LaHair and Castro saw a total of three pitches …

    • John_CC

Would you expect more from the Cubs representation?

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

        One can hope, right?

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Albert Almora just tweeted that he is offically a Cub. Starts his career tomorrow.

  • paulcatanese

I would think that the way LaHair performs tonight will have an impact on his future.
Listening to his interview, and he’s really a nice kid and wish him well tonight.

  • Vivid_Reality

If the Cubs could acquire Justin Upton for Vitters, Baez, Lake, and McNutt, would you do it?

  • http://www.facebook.com/jim.canavan.14 Jim Canavan

    Awesome

  • Ken

NO, giving up to much young talent for one player

  • http://www.facebook.com/jim.canavan.14 Jim Canavan

    Not baez

  • John_CC

NO Way! Baez could be as good Upton. Lake has the same tools as Upton. I do like him, but that is just too much.

  • Aaron

No chance with Baez…the other 3 though, I would do it in a heartbeat

  • cc002600

    in a NY minute

  • tno

I agree in that a strong performance will boost his confidence more than any other game would. I don’t think an 0-fer will hurt though.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Verlander getting hit pretty hard … AL already down 1-0

  • paulcatanese

No,you are right, but giving his glove to Freese to play first for LaRussa does not speak highly of LaHair. That was gross on LaRussa’s part, total insult to LaHair.

  • John_CC

Neither South-Sider got in the game.

  • gary3411

Konerko played, Sale pitched an inning. Peavy didn’t get in.

  • gary3411

Oh and Dudd didn’t get in. They were 2-4.

  • paulcatanese

Oh and guess what,Konerko got hit again, the guy’s a ball magnet.
