From the Wire … Cubs Claim Jairo Asencio from Indians, Designate Bowden for Assignment

According to a report from Keith Law, the Cubs claimed right handed pitcher Jairo Asencio off waivers from the Cleveland Indians. To make room on the 40-man roster, Michael Bowden was designated for assignment.

The Cubs are expected to make the moves official on Friday afternoon.

Asencio missed all of 2010 since it was discovered he was pitching under a false name…..Luis Valdez. He led International league in saves in 2009 and 2011 so he could be a decent gamble.

      He’s a decent pitcher.

Too bad this means the Byrd trade was a loser for us.
(As if that was a surprise).

Just getting rid of byrd is a win…

      • cubtex

It didn’t take this move for all of us to realize that :)

          Ain’t that the truth.

          It’s Ed Lynch revisited…..

Can’t hurt to pick him up I suppose….it’s not like he’s taking a roster spot from someone we need right now.

Bowden might actually clear waivers anyway, if we were interested in keeping him at AAA, which we probably would

For a rebuilding team, which we are, I actually like the strategy of rumaging through the bargain bin to see if we find a keeper.  It’s a crapshoot of course, but we can afford to run through a couple Bowdens if we can find one decent releiver that we can use for more than a year.

We have the roster space; no reason we can’t try more guys out and find keepers.

    • cubtex

Of course that means we already have a couple of Bowdens on our 40 man roster :)

    Good move

Matt Szczur an all star?   Good example of bonus rules, not production, and perez and his 30% KRATE, lol

Just don’t blame the messenger :-)

How would a bonus get a player voted onto an All-Star team?
