From the Wire … Cubs Designate Blake DeWitt for Assignment

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have designated Blake DeWitt for assignment to make room for Travis Wood on the active roster.

Blake DeWitt has struggled this season to the tune of a .138/.133/.172/.306 line in 18 games, 29 at bats. This move comes as no surprise and likely creates a spot on the big league team for Adrian Cardenas in the near future.

With Blake DeWitt being DFA’d, the Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 38 players. The Cubs have 10 days to trade him or grant him his outright release. The Cubs are hoping he clears waivers and chooses to accept the assignment to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs feel he could use regular playing time.

Blake DeWitt avoided arbitration in the off-season by signing a $1.1 million contract.

Needed to be done.  They were right the first time, unfortunately.

      What is Cardenas hitting?

ewitt down, Baker, Johnson, Soriano and Volstad to go.

      Dewitt*

This move portends more on the near horizon.  Either Wood earns another start and Volstad goes down or to the pen which would push someone else down(?) or Wood gets sent back and Cadenas gets the call. As we creep into summer more moves…this roster will be completely different by the end of the season.

Looks like Mather is getting the start at 3B today with Stewart down with the flu as well.

I like today’s roster with Campy and Mather both in there.

May be the break Mather was looking for, with Stewart out he has his chance at least for a couple of games at third base.

Not very sound economics with DeWitt, cost them 1.1 mil for less than 30 days.

      exactly right, Paul

Hard to leave politics out of baseball. What idiots signed a 3B that hits 200 and then signs Cardenas who can’t hit 100.  DeWitts MLB career 257. average.

Hendry gave the Dodgers Lilly and Theriot for DeWitt.

We also received $2.5 million dollars in return, plus some minor leaguers who, unfortunately for us all, did not pan out.
