From the Wire … Cubs Designate Rodrigo Lopez for Assignment

According to multiple reports, the Cubs designated Rodrigo Lopez for assignment to make room on the active roster for Michael Bowden.

Lopez signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in the off-season that included a non-roster invite to big league camp. Lopez was added to the 40-man roster and activated prior to the second game of the season against the Nationals.

Reports Sunday night suggested that either Lendy Castillo or Scott Maine could be the odd man out of the pen in order to make room for Michael Bowden.

By designating Rodrigo Lopez for assignment, the Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.

Glad to see they kept the younger guys. I think Lopez cemented his departure by not getting off the mound on the 2 bunts yesterday. I am not that much of a Soto fan but he had to go a long way to get to those bunts and Lopez was very slow off the mound.

    • Texcubnut

Thanks, Gramps. I was about to post the same thing. I like keeping Maine and Castillo, both.

what is it about Castillo that you like ?

I know he’s young and probably nervous, but he looks God awful to me.

        • cubtex

I was for keeping him as well since this is a “rebuilding” year. He is definately not ready for this stage. I can’t imagine him lasting the year unless he starts to look more comfortable. He could be the next one to go.

  • Chadaudio

I’m really surprised by this move.  It’s probably for the best, but I think Lopez was probably our third best bullpen pitcher.

Oh well, going young is probably better at this point.

  • paulcatanese

Bowden is at Wrigley taking part in pitchers fielding practice? If Their were any part of the Cub defense that needed that its the Cub pitchers:)
I think they are all trying to see how far they can throw it in the stands.
Not a bad thing, it loosens up the people behind the dugout.
Not bashing as I find it humerous, and if one is going to throw the ball away make it travel.

    • Ripsnorter1

The best “worst defensive pitcher” we have is Garza. Last year .788 fielding percentage.

    • Gramps

Just like Roy Smalley used to do!!!!! lol

      • paulcatanese

Love that one, watched it many times.

    • Dnuge

The Cubs pitchers worked overtime on there fielding at spring training, everyday they worked on it & they need more .

  • Ripsnorter1

I told you Shawn Camp stays. They are  in love with him.

    • paulcatanese

Well somebody is, is he younger than Lopez?

    • Tony_Hall

And if Lopez stayed you could have said the same thing.

Camp is most likely next to go.

      • Ripsnorter1

“And if Lopez stayed you could have said the same thing. ”
What do you mean? I posted two days ago that Camp would stay, and I said Maine would go.

        • Tony_Hall

In other words, flip a coin, one of them had to go, and now Camp will be gone next.

And yes you did pick Lopez, but like I said, neither one matters, as both are short timers.

  • Ripsnorter1

Sveum on Brett Jackson and his potential callup….
“He still needs to develop,” Sveum said. “He’s still striking out a little too much and needs to be a little more conscious and a little better in that situation because if you’re striking out that much in Triple-A, it will be that much more against big league pitching.”

    • paulcatanese

Wasn’t it Sveum that said just before the season started that Jackson was as ready now as anyone to be with the Cubs? Or something to that effect ?

      • Ripsnorter1

Yes. He’s the most ready player he’s ever seen. Remember?

        Full of bologna.

        • cubtex

Sveum is learning that he has to say the company line. He is not running the team. He doesn’t control the roster. Remember he told Jim Bowden his starting rotation on radio and then came out the next day and said….I didn’t say that.

        • Darrell Nugent

Sveum needs to learn to shut his mouth

    • Cory

Where did you see this? Not disagreeing by any means, just would like to read the article.

  • Kojak Osborne Jr.

Am I the only that feel this team going to lose a 100 games this year, Lopez is gone but there still awful pictures in our bullpen why is Shawn Camp still here? I think we might have to trade Garza if we rebuilding

  • Kojak Osborne Jr.

Neil have you heard  of any rumors of Garza or Marmol being traded before the deadline ?

    • Neil

      Nothing new
