Cubs Name Ryan Dempster Opening Day Starter

As expected, Ryan Dempster will take the ball on Opening Day against the Washington Nationals. Dale Sveum officially named Ryan Dempster the Cubs’ Opening Day starter on Friday morning.

Sveum also announced that Matt Garza will pitch behind Dempster in the Cubs’ rotation when the season begins … but Paul Maholm will not begin the year as the third starter in the Cubs’ rotation. Maholm will be slotted as the fifth starter in the rotation.

Dale Sveum said he will announce his third and fourth starters on March 28.

Jeff Samardzija and Chris Volstad are expected to fill out the Cubs rotation, likely slotted in the third and fourth spots respectively. Randy Wells could also figure into the rotation mix or begin the year as the longman out of the pen. Rodrigo Lopez has a chance to begin the season with the big league club. Lopez signed a minor league contract and he could be sent down in a numbers game. Lopez is in camp on a non-roster invite and is not on the Cubs’ 40-man roster.

So much for Garza being a number one starter.

so much for sveum knowing one actually!

and the big FA signing is gonna start 5th??

wow—this is a stunner of an offseason!

I think Maholm at #5 is savvy.  He’ll really have a chance to be successful there and I believe Shark and Volstad have each looked like a quality #3 in the NL.  I like the challenge Sveum has issued to each of them.  “I’m putting faith in you, no go prove me right!”

I agree with the Maholm at the #5 slot. He’ll face lower level starters here, and it does give him a better shot at being successful.

It’s the Volstad at the #4, if he indeed does beat out Wells, that I have reservations about.

And of course, the Shark sure got shelled today, didn’t he?

I must have missed someone in Cubs management who called him their BIG FA signing this offseason.  Please find that article for us so we can all be filled in as well.
