Cubs Outrighted Casey Weathers to Iowa and Announced Third Round of Spring Roster Cuts

The Cubs made their third round of spring roster cuts Tuesday when they sent Esmailin Caridad and Casey Weathers to minor league camp. The Cubs’ spring roster stands at 55 players (38 on the big league roster and 17 non-roster invitees). Caridad was a non-roster invitee but Weathers was on the 40-man roster when camp began.

The Cubs also announced Tuesday that Casey Weathers had been outrighted off the 40-man roster Sunday and assigned to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs’ 40-man roster now stands at 39 players. The Cubs acquired Casey Weathers from the Rockies along with Ian Stewart for Tyler Colvin and D.J. LeMahieu in December. Weathers pitched in two games this spring with mixed results.

Weathers pitched a perfect inning on March 5 against the A’s then gave up two runs on one hit with three walks and a strikeout against the Mariners on March 8.

Since last Friday, the Cubs have cut eight players from their spring roster and assigned them to minor league camp at Fitch Park … Marco Carrillo, Trey McNutt, Jae-Hoon Ha, Jonathan Mota, Dae-Eun Rhee, Micah Gibbs, Esmailin Caridad and Casey Weathers.

Makes me wonder if the cutting of Weather’s from the 40 man roster is a precursor to the Cubs signing Soler and putting him on the 40 man roster.  This of course pending his status of residency in the Dominican.
