According to multiple reports, the Cubs granted Doug Davis his unconditional release on Wednesday afternoon. Davis posted a 1-7 record in nine starts since joining the Cubs rotation.
Darwin Barney was activated from the 15-day DL and will take Davis’ spot on the Cubs active roster. With the release of Doug Davis, the Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.
The Cubs have not announced who will take Doug Davis’ spot in the rotation.

Updated 4:16pm CDT – According to multiple reports, Rodrigo Lopez will likely take Davis’ spot in the rotation and start Sunday against the White Sox. Bruce Miles reported that Casey Coleman will likely remain in Iowa for a few more starts. The other option to take the vacated spot in the rotation is Ramon Ortiz.
