Game Seventy-Three: Cubs (30-42) vs. White Sox (35-39)
Game Time – 7:10pm CDT
Coverage – TV: WGN TV – Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 180
Location – U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago

Matt Garza (3-6, 4.14/1.42) vs. Mark Buehrle (6-5, 3.75/1.33)

Weather permitting … The Cubs will try to win on the South Side for the second day in a row, a victory tonight would end the Cubs five series losing streak in Interleague play. Carlos Zambrano set the bar with his impressive eight innings on Monday night. Zambrano helped keep the relievers in the pen and it is up to Matt Garza to follow Zambrano’s lead tonight. Mike Quade needs another long, effective outing from his starter in order to stay out of the bullpen as much as possible.

Mike Quade said Aramis Ramirez would serve as the team’s DH tonight, which would put Alfonso Soriano back in left. With Mark Buehrle on the hill, look for Quade to run out his all right-handed lineup … Reed Johnson in center, Jeff Baker at first and Luis Montanez in right. Where will Blake DeWitt fit into the mix with the southpaw on the mound?

In other newsDarwin Barney hit off a tee Monday for the first time since going on the DL last week. Barney will soon be fitted for a knee brace.

Marlon Byrd continues to make progress and is looking to go out on a minor league rehab with the Iowa Cubs on Monday, June 27. Byrd is targeting to return for the start of the series against the Nationals on July 4.

Tonight it all starts with Matt Garza

Matt Garza is coming off his third win of the season, his first since May 11. Garza struggled early on and allowed five runs on six hits in six innings. Garza walked three and struck out three while allowing two home runs (numbers three and four on the season). The Cubs offense just out hit Milwaukee as Garza started to settle down. Garza got his first taste, and victory, on a wind day at the old ballyard.

Tonight will be Garza’s fourth start since returning from the DL. Garza is 1-2 in his last three starts with a 5.63 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP.

Matt Garza is 1-2 in four career starts against the White Sox with a 6.87 ERA and a 2.24 WHIP … at the Cell, 1-0 in two starts with a 2.70 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.

White Sox Career Numbers against Matt Garza

  • Adam Dunn – 1-for-1 with 2 walks
  • Paul Konerko – 3-for-6 with a double, a home run and 2 walks
  • Brent Lillibridge – 1-for-2 with a walk
  • A.J. Pierzynski – 3-for-5 with a home run and a walk
  • Carlos Quentin – 0-for-2
  • Alex Rios – 4-for-21 with a triple and 2 walks
  • Mark Teahen – 2-for-11 with a walk

After a rough start to the season, Mark Buehrle has been very good of late. Buehrle took the loss in the Sox 1-0 loss to the Twins. Buehrle did his job and held the Twins to one run on three hits in seven innings (a home run by Michael Cuddyer). Buehrle walked two and struck out three.

Buehrle was 3-1 in five starts in May with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP … the veteran southpaw is 2-1 in his last three starts with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

Tonight will be Buehrle’s 13th career start against the Cubs. He is 5-4 in the first 12 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP.

Cubs Career Numbers against Mark Buehrle

  • Jeff Baker – 1-for-3
  • Starlin Castro – 0-for-3
  • Kosuke Fukudome – 1-for-5 with a walk
  • Reed Johnson – 10-for-27 with 3 doubles
  • Carlos Pena – 11-for-41 with a double, a home run and 5 walks
  • Aramis Ramirez – 3-for-13 with a double, a home run and a walk
  • Alfonso Soriano – 7-for-35 with a double, 2 home runs and a walk
  • Geovany Soto – 2-for-8 with a double and a walk

      Babe Baker vs LHP

    • BosephHeyden

Carlos Pena should never willingly be put anywhere near left handed pitching.  All the opposing pitcher needs is a slider and they’ve got his number.

  • Tom U

    Tonight’s minor league starters:

    Iowa – Casey Coleman (1-1, 4.24)
    Daytona – Dae-Eun Rhee ( 2-3, 4.70)
    Boise – Luis Liria (0-0, 0.00)

Tennessee and Peoria remain on All-Star Break

Tennessee’s Ryan Flaherty and Matt Spencer failed to get out of the first round in the Southern League’s Home Run Derby. Flaherty hit 2 home runs, while Spencer hit only one, showing bunt on one of his pitches.

    • Baron_S

      Hi Tom,

Is Bryan LaHair a really bad fielder?  Guy is just raking at Iowa
      http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=lahair001bry

      19HR, 20 doubles in 66 games, .365Avg,.437 OBP,.695 slugging

He looks ready for the big leagues now!!!

      • Tom U

You must be psychic or something! In the reporting business, that’s called a tease.

In the next quarterly report, I address that very issue. If you look at the slash line you posted, then cut the numbers in half, LaHair’s would be very similar to the present Cubs’ starting first baseman (.220/.354/.421/12/6 in 68 games).

The 9.5 million dollar question (what the team would have saved if they would have just gone with LaHair) is WHY?

Some will say that LaHair has a huge hole in his swing that will be exploited by big league pitching. But doesn’t Pena?

Others will point out that at 28, he is an overaged prospect taking advantage of younger players. Poppycock, I say! In watching the minors closely this season, the amount of former major-leaguers pitching a Triple-A is large. LaHair recently faced Seth McClung and Ian Snell, just to name a couple of former major-leaguers.

The big question, if you are looking for a one year stop-gap type of player, why would you spend 10 million dollars when you have a similar player you can plug in for the major league minimum?

Aaron was right in a post he made yesterday, why have reporters such as Phil Rogers and Bruce Levine let Jim Hendry off the hook? It’s time Cubs’ fans to pressure not only the team and it’s management, but the reporters to do their jobs!

        • paulcatanese

Tom, following the minors as you do, the LaHair comparison makes a lot of sense to everyone except management. It is unreal reading other papers that describe the debacle that is in Chicago. Nothing could be further from the truth that the void could not have been filled without Pena, but it’s all about putting people in the stands and bringing in a guy that supposedly hits 30 hr a year was supposed to do that and apparantly it is much to the delight of management. But I guess the Ricketts have 10mil to throw around.

        • Dorasaga

Thanks, Tom. I’m looking forward to the “Talkin’ Lahair” tomorrow. B-)

          • Tom U

Maybe not tomorrow, the report is not quite ready yet, but look for it soon.

  • paulcatanese

It will be interesting to see when Barney comes back how it will affect LeMahieu.
LeMahieu is a very polished player and shows improvement each time he takes the field. Barney is a spark plug and really pushes the infield to excell, as well as being very game smart. LeMahieu has a good solid swing and would be a good addition to the roster but where?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Hood/100000706523521 Richard Hood

It is almost time for the famous I need a break ARAM DL visit. So DJ is safe for a bit.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Excellent play by Castro

    • paulcatanese

      Neil, which one? Ha.

  • JimBo_C

    Nice play by Castro.
Also very nice to see fundamentally sound DJL backing up the throw to first. You don’t see that much anymore.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Garza with a nine-pitch first inning. First opening inning a Cubs pitcher has thrown less than 15 pitches in a long time.

  • Baron_S

    arrrghhh Hawk H is such a hill-billy

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

That was a blast … 1-0 Sox on Konerko’s solo shot, fifth straight game with a dinger

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Good thing Soriano is hustling tonight … hate to see him job after a ball in the corner and job down the first base line on a ball into the hole at short.

  • Kevinwickit

Buehrle is on tonight. The Cubs are screwed.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Another excellent play by Castro

    • paulcatanese

Neik, thats the other one.(joking on both)

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Great point, he’s made three tonight. I will start putting an inning with the comment.

        • paulcatanese

I knew you knew it Neil, I was just messing with you.

  • cubtex

That speed gun at Sox park seems fast. They have Garza consistently at 97.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Hood/100000706523521 Richard Hood

Brenly even commented that it looked like he was throwing faster than he has been. Then Len said that he was mid to high nineties tonight so maybe it is pretty close.

  • cubtex

Castro has the barehanded slow roller play down pat!!! Nice plays!

    • paulcatanese

Comon guys, last night he hit for power, tonight he proved he can barehand balls, got to move him to third, hits for power and no one can bunt against him

      Just messing .

      • cubtex

Somehow I knew you would make that comment about 3rd base. lol I am sure you are right though about eventually playing 3rd, but I hope it isn’t till he is in his 30′s.

        • paulcatanese

          Gotcha

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Pena with his second homer off a lefty … only 4th hit off a southpaw

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Hood/100000706523521 Richard Hood

With his slash line against lefties I do not understand why he plays against lefties at all. But tonight he came through so far. Attaboy Pena.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Pena crushed that ball

  • GaryLeeT

A quick check of the radar says that unless the Cubs can take the lead here in the 5th, the game will end up getting called with the win going to the Sux.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Hood/100000706523521 Richard Hood

Well guys we just saw what a good manager can do to influence and/or get in the head of a young player. At least Castro was able to get to 1st without sailing it like he has done in the past.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Gotta tie this game up right now.

    • paulcatanese

Yep a quick squeeze by Baker would have done it. Brenly heard my phone call and said the same thing. Quade???

      • cubtex

It wouldn’t have mattered Paul since it is only the top of the inning.

        • paulcatanese

Spoken like a true second baseman. By the way, I really like LeMahieu, he looks prett smooth whats your’e take on him?

          • cubtex

I have not seen a lot of him yet. Haven’t seen him turn 2 yet. What do you think of his turn? Better than Barney’s?? He looks like he will make contact on the mlb level and what I have seen of his ab’s…I think he can develop more power.

          • paulcatanese

I would say his turn is at least as good as Barneys and a little smoother,he’s as quick on the turn and more deliberate,or I should say he looks very confident. As far as a quick mindset of the game Barney is ahead of him. You know I like Barney but this kid looks good and I think he will swing a better bat.

          • cubtex

It is nice to see some of depth at middle infield. I just wish one of them was a basestealer. The kid they drafted out of Miami…Zeke DeVoss is also a 2nd baseman and I think they might have that in mind and move him there. This team needs speed desperately!

          • paulcatanese

Forgot, LeMahieu’s feeds are smoother to Barney but not as spectacular.

          • cubtex

It’s also nice to be 6″4..  He’ll snare a lot of line drives with that frame.

          • paulcatanese

He did get one that I thought would have been out of Barneys reach. What I forgot to say, thinking of the adjectives to describe Barney, he is more aggressive than LeMahieu, but not as smooth.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Hood/100000706523521 Richard Hood

This is going to sounds weird but most guys will understand what I am trying to say I think. I think that DJ is way quicker than Barney but Barney is faster and (smarter is not the right word but it is what I am going to use) around the bag. I think that is why I still see DJ as a 3rd baseman if he continues to develop.

DJ’s first move instincts are right on and that is a requirement to play the hot corner. The only thing we have not seen yet is if He has the arm to be an everyday 3rd baseman in the majors but his lateral movement and first step are going to transition nice at 3rd

          • paulcatanese

I agree with you Richard, and also was trying to find the right word to use in the comparison. The only thing I could add would be “experienced aggresion” on the side of Barney. I  really like LeMahiue, as evidenced with the ability to spell his name. I am sure he will play at the big league level, but not so sure that he will get the proper opportunity under Quade as he is the first one to be pulled out of the lineup in any sort of situation, makes it difficult for LeMahieu to develop.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Hood/100000706523521 Richard Hood

I said the same thing right before Brenly did and my wife said I am either psychic or should have been a manager. I wish for either but will take the managers gig.

        • cubtex

I don’t understand what the rush would have been to tie up the game? I would not have taken the bat out of Baker’s hand there(even though he did strike out)

          • cubtex

They would have to be sure they would have gotten the whole inning in to want to squeeze there. The way the rain was forecasted it was pointless. That is why I do not understand that comment by Brenly.

          • cubtex

If Baker would have bunted thru a squeeze with the rain…when play would have resumed…the Cubs would not have scored that run.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

There is a rain delay on the South Side … Cubs down 2-1 in the top of the 6th
with runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Ramirez due up

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Baker looked at strike three with the tying run on third … and the rain coming.

  • GaryLeeT

The storms are moving fast, and there is only an hour’s worth of rain delay. With the game close, and the Cubs in position to score, this game probably won’t be called.

    • paulcatanese

It better be less than that, more than 20 minutes and Aram forgets how to hit and has to be re-trained.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Hood/100000706523521 Richard Hood

I just hope that Buerhle is taken out after the delay. That guy is nasty.

        • cubtex

I am sure both starters are done….

        • paulcatanese

I hope he takes him out, but what then, a wholesale change of the batting order by Quade?

          • cubtex

Maybe start off with Koyie Hill pinch hitting for ARAM? Just kidding :)

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Cubs-Sox hoping for a 10 p.m. resumption

  • paulcatanese

Boy a rain delay is not in the Cubs favor, any length of time and Garza will probably not come back out. What then? Another bullpen night? Russell,Grabow, or Lopez?
Dosen’t look good. If it starts back up,the Cubs better score a few not just one or two.

    • paulcatanese

Just saw the blurb,Russell warming up, oh, boy.

I like your confidence in Kirk, but I don’t think he’ll be ready by next season.

      • cubtex

I just hope McNutt is ready Tom. Right now he is the only possibility….do you agree?

        • Tom U

I thought McNutt was possible for this season, especially if the team needed the PR from a hot-shot prospect. The bad news is that injuries have delayed his development, The good news is that none of the injured were serious, but have been nagging.

          • cubtex

Yes, I really think the Cubs need to overhaul their rotation for next year and I am worried that Cashner will be relegated to the pen now. He has top of the rotation stuff but if he is going to be moved to the bullpen next year, they really need to make a big trade for a top starter. IMO

      • Anonymous47701

Well, I figured Austin Kirk could help bring some balance to the Starting Rotation, especially if the Cubs sign lefty starter CJ Wilson in the offseason. Man would it be good to have Wilson in a Cubs Uniform next year.

  • cubtex

Wow! Dunn  looks awful! I am glad the Cubs are not stuck with that contract. He has almost 100 K’s already and on pace for over 200K’s. Maybe he should get his spleen removed to balance himself out??? LOL

    • Anonymous47701

Yeah…….Dunn may look like a fool at the plate, but compared to the Cubs stupidly aggressive lineup, he can’t be any worse….or can he?

  • Tom U

For those of you needing a baseball fix, Boise is leading  Eugene 4-0 to start the third inning. Luis Liria has struck out three and allowed no hits in two innings.

Paul Hoilman home run in the first brought home Pin-Chieh Chen. Chen’s single in the second brought in Reggie Golden, who doubled earlier. Golden’s double plated Wilson Contreras.

The Boise broadcaster just stated that they heard from the Cubs that roster moves will be happening tomorrow.

    • paulcatanese

Tom,it seems that if one is a player in the Cub system they better have their bags packed at all times.

    • Tom U

Liria allowed three earned runs in the bottom of the third, but got out of the inning with a nice Zapenas-Darvill-Hoilman double play and a strikeout. Kyler Burke is scheduled to pitch tonight. Chen just tripled home Wes Darvill, 5-3 Hawks.

Memphis blew open a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh with seven earned runs off Esmailin Caridad. It was so bad for Iowa, utility player Jonathan Mota pitched a scoreless ninth. Iowa loses 13-3.

seriously Neil, Lopez has been lousy his whole career!! GAWD!!

  • Stu_studdly

To summarize, by putting Dewitt in the game, Brenly thinks Quade is an idiot

    • studio179

      I agree.

    • paulcatanese

You are correct and Brenly is right. He gave the same explanation that I have day after day with Quade’s platoon lineup. Each time it comes back at him in the late stages of the game. The Cubs have to win early or not at all, and Quade proved it again.
