Wellemeyer and Maine among Cubs Roster Cuts

According to multiple reports, the Cubs reduced their spring roster by four players Wednesday morning. Justin Berg and Scott Maine were optioned to Triple-A Iowa … and Todd Wellemeyer and Angel Guzman were assigned to minor league camp.

The Cubs spring roster officially stands at 36 players with more cuts expected by Thursday or Friday.

With the Cubs optioning Scott Maine to Triple-A, it appears James Russell will begin the year as the Cubs third lefty in the pen … joining Sean Marshall and John Grabow.

In other newsMax Ramirez went for an MRI on his left wrist. Ramirez is battling for a backup job with Koyie Hill and Welington Castillo. Ramirez is out of minor league options and if he does not make the team out of camp, he would have to clear waivers before being assigned to minor league camp.

I’M HAPPY. Sorry about Maine, but he didn’t look sharp enough. Of course, Russell ain’t getting the job done at this time, either. I still look for him to be shipped to AAA Iowa to work as a starter . . . .

WHAT IS BRANDON LOOPER STILL DOING ON THIS TEAM???

    • cubtex

I hope this doesn’t mean Silva to the rotation and Cashner to the pen.

  • Ripsnorter1

You mean to tell me that Quade lost sleep over cutting Wellemeyer, Maine, Guzman and Berg??!!!?

I imagine he lost sleep on the idea he cut Wellemeyer more than anything because of health issues he doesn’t get a shot.

Braden Looper is still on the team because he has a contract in place to work for the Cubs front office if he doesn’t make the team. So why send him home early. He might get hot.

Quade should lose sleep,he has enough rest built up since last August. Actually been sleeping all that time and is just now finding out who is on the team.

  • RynoTiger

why is my mom still on the team? I thought she would have been cut a long time ago. Makes no sense. I guess JH must think she makes a mean meatloaf.

you must be waiting for her to get back home and do your laundry.

      • Ripsnorter1

        And fix dinner . . . .

        • paulcatanese

Hey guys, support our Moms, their always there when we need them, unike Koyie Hill.

  • Cheryl

There’s a note that states Rairez went for an MRI on his left wrist. Could he be put on injured reserve? If that happens, guess who’s catching.

    From Carrie Muskat:

Silva, Cashner, Looper still in mix for Cubs 5th rotation spot. Says Quade: “Until you’re gone, you’re here, so keep playing.”

    • Tony_Hall

Neil – Excellent point by Q, if you haven’t been cut, you still have a chance.

Makes you question, why some of these players are still there.

      • paulcatanese

Tony, thats the question of the decade, why?

      • T_Leise

Great site. I’ve followed this site for a couple years now, just never posted.

Silva should be released and shouldn’t be on the club, but if he could pitch one good game maybe there a team desperate enough that would take him, IF the Cubs paid most of his salary. If they could save a million or two then it would be worth it.

They would probably stick him in the rotation if that happened though.

Welcome to the site, may you not post in frustration as many of we have.

I’m not sure but I heard Castillo was sent to Iowa.
