Game Time – 3:05pm CDT
Coverage – TV: MLB Network – Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 177
Location – Tempe Diablo Stadium, Tempe

Andrew Cashner (1-1, 3.97/1.59) vs. Jered Weaver (1-0, 4.73/0.90)

Cubs vs. Angels in Tempe called off because of rain after Cubs finished hitting in top of 4th. Cubs led 7-4 at the time.

Weather permitting … The Cubs will go for two spring wins in a row behind Andrew Cashner. Q’s crew has a lot of work to do with just nine practice games left on the schedule. If the weather expected in the Phoenix area wipes out today’s game, the Cubs will be down to just eight exhibition contests to try to find answers to a lot of questions.

Andrew Cashner has all but locked up the fifth spot in the Cubs’ Opening Day rotation … and the very talented right-hander needs a good outing today.

After be scratched from Sunday’s game with 102 degree temperature, Aramis Ramirez is supposed to be back in the starting lineup this afternoon … Quade has him in the cleanup spot against Jered Weaver.

After outings by Carlos Silva (Friday) and Braden Looper (Saturday), Andrew Cashner has all but nailed down the fifth spot in the Cubs rotation. Cashner has been very good in spurts this spring … and not so good in others. Cashner needs a solid, consistent outing this afternoon that results in a bunch of strikes and a bunch of outs.

Cashner will make just his third start of the spring, fifth outing. He has allowed five runs, all earned, on 11 hits in 11 1/3 innings with a hit batsman, seven walks and six strikeouts.

In other newsAugie Ojeda was scheduled to have an epidural Monday to help with back spasms that has kept him out of games for the last ten days. Ojeda will reportedly be out an additional two to three days. Darwin Barney has passed Ojeda this spring and figures to begin the season with at least a bench job on the big league team.

Cubs lineup vs. Angels – 3/21
Kosuke Fukudome – RF
Starlin Castro – SS
Marlon Byrd – CF
Aramis Ramirez – 3B
Carlos Pena – 1B
Alfonso Soriano – LF
Geovany Soto – C
Darwin Barney – 2B
Andrew Cashner – P

Jered Weaver should start his third consecutive Opening Day for the Angels. Mike Scioscia has not officially named Weaver his Opening Day starter, but all signs point to Weaver taking the hill in the first game of the year.

Weaver is arguably the most underrated pitcher in the big leagues. Weaver has dominated this spring to the tune of 17 strikeouts to zero walks in 13 1/3 innings. Today will be Weaver’s fifth start of the spring … eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits in his first four starts.

Kevin Jepsen, Francisco Rodriguez and Jason Bulger are scheduled to follow Weaver to the hill Monday afternoon.

Quote of the Day

  • Neil

    Today’s updated lineup:

    Fukudome – RF
    Castro – SS
    Byrd – CF
    Pena – 1B
    Soto – C
    Soriano – LF
    Baker – 3B
    Barney – 2B
    Cashner – P

Ramirez was scratched, he’s still sick.

The Angels are running out an everyday lineup … It will be a good test for Cashner.

  • Neil

Due to the weather, Angels moved Jered Weaver to a minor league game

  • Neil

The other Francisco Rodriguez is starting the game for the Angels

  • Neil

Pena with a 3-run homer to right on a 3-2 pitch

    • paulcatanese

Well, well, well. If Pena keeps this up,I may have to eat my words. And thats okay.

      • Tony

Paul – That is the thing that most Cubby Blue Kool-Aide drinkers, don’t understand, There is nothing I would rather be more wrong about than the Cubs season this year.

I would love to be watching a quality, well disciplined, and fundamentally sound Cubs team, win games, the division, the playoffs, and ultimately the World Series.

Unfortunately, I disagree with many of the moves that JH makes to this roster.

        • paulcatanese

Thanks Tony, totaly agree with you. Unfortunatly I don’t think Quade will have much input at that meeting tommorow with JH. Although some of these guys are making it impossible to be ignored(Barney,Castillo) that could cause a small riot if there not heading back north. The reverse of that is the demise of Hill as a player,I just wonder how long that can be ignored?

          • paulcatanese

As an afterthought I see where Quade has only a few games left to decide on the roster. It would have been much simpler for him had he played some of these guys at the end of last year. But then he would have put himself at risk not to get the job he has.(still trying to figure out what that job is) Still insist the most he will do tomorrow will be to pick up orders from JH and delegate from there.

Overall this spring how have Cashner’s secondary pitches looked? I remember there was some talk last year about him needing to improve them.

      • Neil

Larry, he’s had trouble with command. Cashner struggled today but they probably should not have played.

  • paulcatanese

Neil, the computer is now up.Was getting notice that site was down, but okay now have a great day.

    • studio179

The site was down for me, too. Kept sending me to a pillow site.

      • The Maven

Maybe the people from the religious pillow site know something about the Cubs WE don’t?

      • Neil

Everything should be back … sorry out of my control.

      • Agustin

I got the pillow drill too! I even bought one because I thought Neil might get a commission….I’ll let you know how good it is when it gets here! lol

  • Neil

Cashner gets out of the first, allowed two runs.

  • ripken boy

Barney ay second base, I like it. He should be the starter.

  • Neil

Cubs game in Tempe against Angels called off because of rain after Cubs finished hitting in top of 4th. Cubs up 7-4 at the time.

    • Christian2334

Neil…I can’t find the official stats anywhere since the game was called! Insaw penas 3 run homer and starlins triple, but how were our other 4 runs scored?!

      • Neil

I posted the box score in the recap. The last two runs scored on a wind-blown double by Soto in the fourth. Soto was thrown out at third to end the inning.

Marlon Byrd drove in the fifth run with a bloop single to right in the second that plated Castro.

        Hope this helps …
