Braden Looper (0-0, 7.20/0.80) vs. Daniel Hudson (1-0, 2.57/2.00)

Q’s crew will try to put at least one in the win column this afternoon. The Cubs have only one more split squad day left on their spring schedule after today … Tuesday, March 15 in Phoenix against the A’s and the Rockies in Mesa.

After losing both split squad games to the Reds on Saturday, the Cubs are looking to split the long weekend of games. Carlos Zambrano will face the Dodgers in Las Vegas with Mike Quade calling the shots. Today will be Z’s fourth start of the spring.

Pat Listach will serve as manager as Braden Looper and the rest of the Cubs roster returns to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale to face the Diamondbacks.

Spring Training Game Seventeen: Cubs (ss) (6-10) vs. Dodgers (ss) (5-11)
Carlos Zambrano vs. Rubby De La Rosa in Las Vegas

Carlos Zambrano will make his fourth start of the spring this afternoon. Big Z has thrown the ball extremely well so far. Z has allowed one run on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in eight innings..

Rubby De La Rosa is one of two De La Rosas in Dodgers camp. Rubby will make his third appearance of the spring, first start. He has allowed two runs on three hits in four innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

The right-hander turned 22 nine days ago (March 4, 1989).

Rod Barajas, Rafael Furcal, Matt Kemp and James Loney are expected to be in the starting lineup against the Cubs this afternoon. The other half of the Dodgers roster will face the White Sox at Camelback Ranch. Hiroki Kuroda is slated to make the start in Glendale.

A split squad Cubs team beat the Dodgers last Sunday at HoHoKam 5-3 on D.J. LeMahieu’s walk-off homer. Can Q’s squad pull out another win against the Dodgers?

Spring Training Game Eighteen: Cubs (ss) (6-10) vs. Diamondbacks (5-13)
Braden Looper vs. Daniel Hudson in Scottsdale

Pat Listach and company will face the Diamondbacks for the first time this spring. Braden Looper will get the ball to start. Looper will make his first start after appearing out of the pen in his first two spring outings.

Looper has allowed four runs on four hits, hit a batter and struck out three in five innings of work. Looper was very good in the first two innings of his last outing before hitting a wall in the third.

Looper figures to be behind Randy Wells, Andrew Cashner and even Carlos Silva at this point in the battle for the final two spots in the rotation. Looper has said he’s not sure if he would want to pitch out of the pen if that was his only option to make the team on Opening Day.

The Cubs will face former Southsider Daniel Hudson this afternoon. Hudson ended up in Arizona in the Edwin Jackson deal last summer. Hudson has pitched extremely well for the D’Backs since the trade.

Hudson will make his fourth appearance, third start of the spring. He has allowed three runs, two earned, on 12 hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

    • matt

neil whos on 3rd in scottsdale

      • Neil

Matt, Ramirez is … thanks for catching. I corrected the lineup.

    • Patrick Schaefer

I wish they’d give LeMahieu a start at 2b especially ove Scales, Scales has no future with the Cubs, I know he hasn’t played above High A ball but I would love to see how he fields and see what he can do.

      • Neil

Patrick, problem is they did not invite LeMahieu to big league camp.

  • Neil

Brett Jackson sidelined with sore shoulder hurt on diving catch in Vegas

  • Neil

Good job by Z picking off Furcal. And the defense bobbles but throws out Loney to end the first.

  • Neil

From Jon Heyman: Michael Young perfect for Cubs: 2b, 3-hole hitter, leader. But Cubs person says “not happening”

  • Neil

Looper just gave up a run in Scottsdale … got himself into a big jam in the second.

  • Neil

Looper just broke up Daniel Hudson’s no-hit bid in the third.

Perez walked and Barney doubled in Looper … game tied at one in the third.

  • Neil

Byrd just reached on infield single, Cubs 2 D’Backs 1 after two and a half.

  • Neil

Marquez Smith looks good at third …

    • Tony_Hall

I have seen a few AB’s, and he seems to hit the ball hard. We need a few bats on the bench.

    • Tony_Hall

      ON second thought…

      • Neil

        Yeah, Smith booted that one.

  • Neil

Soto just threw out Kelly Johnson trying to steal second to end the third. Looper is pitching a good game.

  • Neil

Pena homered in Scottsdale, second in three games.

    • Tony_Hall

That is good to see. He will need to hit a lot of HR’s to make up for his low batting average.

  • Neil

Looper out in Scottsdale. Good outing, better at the plate. Cubs up 4-1 in bottom of fourth

  • Neil

Scott Rice is confirming he should be one of the roster cuts Wednesday.

  • Neil

And so is Kyle Smit …

  • Neil

Koyie can’t get down the bunt.

  • Neil

Good job by Fukudome against the Southpaw.

  • Neil

    Wood is pitching in Scottsdale.

Rebel Ridling and Michael Burgess also playing.

  • Neil

Wood faced minimum in the seventh. Allowed a hit but threw only 11 pitches, six for strikes.

  • Neil

Junior Lake is hitting for Kerry Wood

  • Neil

    Szczur is hitting in Scottsdale

  • Neil

Ugly 2/3 of an inning for Samardzija. At least Clevenger was able to show his range behind the plate.

    • paulcatanese

Neil, didn’t Clevenger have two hits? If so he has hit 100% over Hill, but then has everybody else that has caught this spring. Watche a little of the game, good to see baseball again.

      • Neil

Paul, Clevenger had two hits and scored the game-winning run on Baker’s single.

  • Neil

Good job by Stevens cleaning up Samardzija’s mess.

  • Neil

Cubs beat D-Backs 7-5 in Scottsdale. Cubs defense turned 5 double plays, Carlos Pena: 2-for-4 w/ HR, 2 R

  • The Maven

Where has this been from Jeff Stevens??????

    • cubtex

Stevens has been kind of the forgotten man. He has a nice curve and throws strikes.

      • Neil

Stevens has problems when the third deck is added.

  • Neil

Cubs beat the Dodgers 4-3 on walk-off single by Jeff Baker in 10th. Starlin Castro: 3-for-3 w/ RBI, Carlos Zambrano: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 Ks

    • jw

Jeff Baker was hot, Samardzija not.
