Braden Looper (0-0, 7.20/0.80) vs. Daniel Hudson (1-0, 2.57/2.00)
Q’s crew will try to put at least one in the win column this afternoon. The Cubs have only one more split squad day left on their spring schedule after today … Tuesday, March 15 in Phoenix against the A’s and the Rockies in Mesa.
After losing both split squad games to the Reds on Saturday, the Cubs are looking to split the long weekend of games. Carlos Zambrano will face the Dodgers in Las Vegas with Mike Quade calling the shots. Today will be Z’s fourth start of the spring.
Pat Listach will serve as manager as Braden Looper and the rest of the Cubs roster returns to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale to face the Diamondbacks. Spring Training Game Seventeen: Cubs (ss) (6-10) vs. Dodgers (ss) (5-11)
Carlos Zambrano vs. Rubby De La Rosa in Las Vegas
Carlos Zambrano will make his fourth start of the spring this afternoon. Big Z has thrown the ball extremely well so far. Z has allowed one run on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in eight innings..
Rubby De La Rosa is one of two De La Rosas in Dodgers camp. Rubby will make his third appearance of the spring, first start. He has allowed two runs on three hits in four innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
The right-hander turned 22 nine days ago (March 4, 1989).
Rod Barajas, Rafael Furcal, Matt Kemp and James Loney are expected to be in the starting lineup against the Cubs this afternoon. The other half of the Dodgers roster will face the White Sox at Camelback Ranch. Hiroki Kuroda is slated to make the start in Glendale.
A split squad Cubs team beat the Dodgers last Sunday at HoHoKam 5-3 on D.J. LeMahieu’s walk-off homer. Can Q’s squad pull out another win against the Dodgers?
Spring Training Game Eighteen: Cubs (ss) (6-10) vs. Diamondbacks (5-13)
Braden Looper vs. Daniel Hudson in Scottsdale
Pat Listach and company will face the Diamondbacks for the first time this spring. Braden Looper will get the ball to start. Looper will make his first start after appearing out of the pen in his first two spring outings.
Looper has allowed four runs on four hits, hit a batter and struck out three in five innings of work. Looper was very good in the first two innings of his last outing before hitting a wall in the third.
Looper figures to be behind Randy Wells, Andrew Cashner and even Carlos Silva at this point in the battle for the final two spots in the rotation. Looper has said he’s not sure if he would want to pitch out of the pen if that was his only option to make the team on Opening Day.
The Cubs will face former Southsider Daniel Hudson this afternoon. Hudson ended up in Arizona in the Edwin Jackson deal last summer. Hudson has pitched extremely well for the D’Backs since the trade.
Hudson will make his fourth appearance, third start of the spring. He has allowed three runs, two earned, on 12 hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.
