Spring Training Game Seven: Cubs (1-5) vs. Padres (3-2-1)
Game Time – 2:05pm CST
Coverage – TV: None – Radio: WGN Radio
Location – HoHokam Park, Mesa

Andrew Cashner (0-1, 9.00/2.00) vs. Wade LeBlanc (0-0, 9.00/1.50)

After a horrible start to the Cactus League schedule, the Cubs have played better ball over the last two days. Q’s crew did not commit an error for the first time Friday, now they just need to work on throwing strikes. The pen has blown two four-run leads in the last two games. It is time for the pen to show some improvement as the first week of the exhibition games comes to an end.

Andrew Cashner took the loss against the Brewers last Monday at HoHoKam. Cashner gave up two runs on three hits with a walk in two innings. After his first outing of the spring, Cashner said he felt he had good stuff but he did not like where the ball went. The Cubs really want Cashner in the rotation to start the year, but if he’s not ready Cashner will begin the year in the pen. The Cubs want Cashner’s talent at the Major League level.

Randy Wells, who started the game against the Brewers, will follow Cashner this time around. Wells pitched two innings of scoreless ball. Wells struck out one and surrendered two hits (0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP).

Wade LeBlanc will make his second start of the spring for the Friars. LeBlanc is battling for the fifth starter spot in San Diego’s rotation. LeBlanc surrendered two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks in his first two innings of the spring.

In other spring news … Fernando Perez was able to take batting practice Friday and could return to the field Sunday … just in time for the Cubs first split-squad games of the spring.

Today’s game will be broadcast on WGN Radio. Pat Hughes has the weekend off so today’s exhibition will be called by Len Kasper and Keith Moreland. The Cubs first telecast of the spring is Sunday (WGN). Kasper will go over to the TV side with his partner Bob Brenly and Dave Eanet will join Zonk in the booth … both TV and radio will be at HoHoKam for the game against the Dodgers. The other half of the Cubs roster will be in Goodyear facing Dusty Baker and the Reds.

    Today’s lineup:

    Fukudome – RF
    Castro – SS

    Hill – C
    Cashner – P

So far it is safe to say, that Q likes Castro in the 2 hole, Byrd in the 3 hole (WOW, don’t look at other teams 3 hole hitters, there is just no comparison), ARam is 4th, Pena 5th, and Soriano 6th. So, 2-6 seem set, it is just who leads off every day, the other guy goes to the bottom with the catcher.

If the Cubs were a player or 2 away from contending, I would be outraged by Byrd batting 3rd, which is traditionally the place for a team’s best hitter. But what’s the point in caring who bats where? Who do the Cubs have that will bat over .280 this year? Castro, and maybe Ramirez, but I doubt it.

        • Tony_Hall

The point is that the Cubs do not have a 3 hole hitter. The closest thing is ARam, but he wants to bat 4th, and obvioulsy has made it very clear to Q, that is where he will be batting.

Gary,I agree with you #3 is a real problem, maybe, maybe Colvin with Ramirez following. I dont think it could be worse. But as I posted to Tony, Byrd either #1 or 6-7.Just my opinion.

          • GaryLeeT

I thought Colvin too, but with the left handed Fukudome in right and the left handed Pena at first, where does he get the ABs? The Pena signing was so stupid on so many levels.

      • paulcatanese

I agree Byrd #3??? And the 7-8-9 three auto outs if they go with a rigthander. But this is ST and I wuld think everyone goes in and out. Really think Byrd would serve the Cubs best at leadoff or 6-7 in the lineup. Where is Aaron with his stats to back it up?

        • Dakeller80

Right on cue. . .Byrd has an awesome day in the 3 hole. Why are people down on Byrd. Yeah he had a rough second half, but he still batted close to .300 last year and he’s killing it so far this spring. In general, I felt like he was a lot better at keeping innings alive last year than anyone else on the team. But I’m probably biased because I just like the guy. I will admit I like him better as leadoff.

          • paulcatanese

In regards to Byrd, just dont see him in the 3 spot, not a pure power hitter, but he does make contact and will take a walk. Thats why I say #1 or 6-7 in the lineup not anything against him, but he does chip at the ball and has a lot of soft hits over the infield, and that does not make it in the three spot. Over the long haul he will not have many days like today.

I’d really like to see Clevenger get some more playing time, and Barney getting a lot of time at 2b.
Hill hit .128 last year in spring training, I remember seeing and went on to hit a pathetic .214 and he doesn’t walk at all. He has no business on the ML roster.

  • Bryan

Are there truly no better options for leadoff than Fukodome? Really?

You gotta love the spring training roster management by Quade thus far. These lineups look like the same as last Aug/Sept. Get the cushions for the kids so they can get a comfy seat on the bench.

Good job by Cashner getting out of the bases loaded and one out jam. Struggled with his command in the first …

Solid second inning for Cashner. Wells is in to pitch.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Another error … #16 in seven games. This one was mental. Chase Headley with a delayed steal of third. Hill threw to Ramirez, he dropped the ball … E2.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Changed the scoring … Ramirez got the error.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Kosuke picked off first, Castro with a single and Byrd with his second double of the game

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Soriano delivers a 2-out single to right with the bases loaded, 3-2 Cubs.

    • Patrick_Schaefer

Levine said that Jaramillo has been working a lot with soriano on hitting the breaking ball to righfield.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Patrick, you can tell. Soriano’s hits to right field that I saw were hit with authority. They were not bloop hits. His only homer was to right center …

        • Patrick_Schaefer

Encouraging so far for Soriano. We definitely need him to produce if we are going to have any chance of contending.
