Ryan Dempster (12-10, 3.76/1.32) vs. Randy Wolf (11-10, 4.68/1.51)

We will never forget …

The Cubs will try to make it two in a row over the Brew Crew tonight behind Ryan Dempster. Will the third time be the charm for Dempster? After two unsuccessful attempts to record the 100th win of his Major League career, and in the process picking up his 100th loss (99-100), Dempster will try once again to reach the 100-win plateau.

In Other News
The Cubs have penciled in Jeff Samardzija to make the start next Saturday in Miami against the Marlins. Samardzija is available out of the pen this weekend.

A fake press release made it’s way around Miller Park Friday night that ripped Jim Hendry.

Jeff Baker was in the original lineup Friday night but was scratched due to a lingering Achilles-tendon pain. Baker is expected to be in the starting lineup with Wolf on the mound.

Tom Gorzelanny will throw another side session Sunday and is expected to rejoin the rotation soon.

Following today’s game there will be only 20 remaining on the Cubs’ schedule … tonight it all begins with Ryan Dempster. It would be an understatement to say Ryan Dempster has been horrible in his last two outings. After his best stretch of the season, Dempster is 0-2 in his last two starts … and has not completed five innings.

The Pirates and Mets took live batting practice against Dempster to the tune of a 0-2 record with an 11.55 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP. Dempster has allowed 14 runs, 10 earned, on 16 hits with seven walks and nine strikeouts in his last 7 2/3 innings. Dempster appears to be thinking too much and has not found a rhythm since his outing against the Nationals back on August 25.

Dempster has pitched well against the Brewers throughout his career … and he needs one of those outings tonight.

Dempster is 14-3 in 43 career games, 21 starts, against Milwaukee with a 2.71 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Tonight will be Dempster’s fifth start against the Brewers this season … 3-0 in four starts with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

The Cubs will face an old nemesis tonight in Randy Wolf. The crafty lefty has either dominated the Cubs or has struggled against the Cubs throughout his career … there hasn’t been anything in between.

Wolf is coming off a very good start against the Phillies. He gave up two runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Wolf is in the middle of a very good stretch.

After a horrible first half, Wolf posted a 3-1 record in six starts last month with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP … he is 4-1 in his last seven outings with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.

The Cubs beat Randy Wolf back on June 9 at Miller Park. Lou’s offense scored eight runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings with a pair of walks. The Cubs hit five homers that Wednesday night … Derrek Lee, Marlon Byrd (twice) and Geovany Soto (twice).

Tonight will be the veteran southpaw’s 19th career start versus the Cubs … 5-8 with a 4.73 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.
