Casey Coleman (1-1, 5.76/1.48) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (11-12, 3.71/1.30)
Happy Labor Day from everyone at the CCO!
It is the unofficial end of summer, the NFL season kicks off on Thursday and the Cubs enter play today 19 games under .500 … seemingly a season away from the 24-27 mark the Cubs owned back on Memorial Day. As Lou would say, “Look, it’s a way of life!”
The Cubs are coming off another embarrassing loss but are still 8-4 since Mike Quade was named the team’s interim manager.
Casey Coleman was pushed back a couple of days after originally penciled in to start game two against the Mets. The Cubs actually moved him to Tuesday before flip-flopping him and Carlos Silva on Saturday.
Aramis Ramirez left Sunday’s debacle after limping down to first base in the eighth inning. Ramirez has a strained quad and is listed as day-to-day.
With only nine home games, and one final homestand left on this horrible season, this afternoon it all begins with Casey Coleman …
Coleman is one start removed from his first Major League win and a strong finish to the season will go along way for Coleman in the off-season.
Casey Coleman will face the Astros for the first time. He is 0-1 in three games, one start, at Wrigley with a 10.24 ERA and a 2.38 WHIP.
The Cubs offense will see a familiar face this Labor Day … Wandy Rodriguez. Rodriguez is coming off two impressive outings against the Phillies and Cardinals. The Astros’ southpaw held the Phils to just one run on five hits in seven innings (one walk and six strikeouts) then turned around and dominated the Cardinals. Albert Pujols’ team could not put a run across the board in seven innings … and managed only two hits.
After a very bad first half (6-11 in 18 games with a 4.97 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP), Rodriguez is 5-1 in nine starts since the break with a 1.61 ERA and a miniscule 0.93 WHIP … In August, 2-1 in six starts with a 1.34 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP.
This afternoon will be the lefties third start of the season against the Cubs. Rodriguez is 1-0 with a 4.85 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.
