Can the Chicago Cubs win three games in a row? The last time Lou’s crew posted three consecutive wins was back at the end of May (May 22 – 23, May 25). Tonight is the final match-up of the season against the D’Backs. The Cubs are 5-1 in the first six versus Arizona and will be looking for their second series sweep of the year (Brewers in Milwaukee, April 23-April 25).

Lou Piniella will need a long outing from Ryan Dempster tonight. Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol have pitched in the first two games and both went multiple innings on Tuesday night. It will be interesting to see if Lou tries Andrew Cashner at the end of the game, if the opportunity arises, to keep from using Marmol in the ninth.

For the second time this season the Cubs will face a pitcher that has thrown a no hitter this year. Dallas Braden tossed a perfect game for the A’s and Edwin Jackson tossed the majors latest no-hitter in the Year of the Pitcher.

Edwin Jackson threw a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays back on June 25. Jackson walked eight and struck out six. Due to his pitch count (149, 79 for strikes), the D’Backs held him back a couple of days and it was a full week before Jackson took the hill again. Jackson picked up a win against the Dodgers in his start following the no-hitter … but admitted he struggled with his mechanics.

The third annual Road to Wrigley game will take place at the old ballpark tonight. The Peoria Chiefs will face the Kane County Cougars … first pitch at 7:00pm CDT. Hak-Ju Lee, Logan Watkins, Matt Cerda, Jae-Hoon Ha and Nelson Perez lead the list of Cubs’ prospects managed by Casey Kopitzke.

Tonight it all starts with Ryan Dempster

Ryan Dempster is coming off of one of his worst starts of the season. For the third time this year, Dempster allowed five runs in an outing (second time to the Reds) and struggled with his command. Dempster tied a season-low with five walks and simply lost the strike zone in the seventh.

Prior to his loss against the Reds, Dempster posted 3-1 record in five starts with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.

Dempster is 3-3 in nine road starts this season with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.

Ryan Dempster has beaten Arizona just once in his career. Dempster is 1-6 in 16 career appearances, 12 starts, versus the D’Backs with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. Dempster did not face Arizona during the four-game series at Wrigley this season and is 1-4 in nine games, eight starts, at Chase Field with a 6.80 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP.

The Cubs will get their second look of the season at Edwin Jackson. Lou Piniella’s crew beat Jackson back on May 2 by a score of 10-5 … the Cubs managed eight runs on 11 hits in four innings. Alfonso Soriano and Marlon Byrd went deep against Jackson.

Jackson is coming off a win against the Dodgers and has won his last three starts. The Dodgers scored four runs on seven hits in five innings but the D’Backs won the game 12-5.

Jackson posted a 2-0 record in five starts last month with a 2.11 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Jackson is 3-0 in his last six outings with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.

Tonight will be Jackson’s tenth home start of the season. He is 3-3 in the first nine with a 5.34 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Jackson is 0-1 in two starts versus the Cubs with a 8.18 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP.
